I've never been more ashamed of my country.

quiteathome · 06/03/2022 18:08

Neither have I.

Although if you look at the generally ordinary people like us. Everyone I know has made a donation. Either money or 'stuff'

It is the people in power. I am so ashamed of them.

DrBlackbird · 06/03/2022 19:47

So depressing. A mum at DCs school is Polish and did a collection that we all contributed to, which made us all feel that we were helping a tiny bit. Why on earth did they stop them?? Each day there seems to be fresh reasons for despising Johnson and Co.

Anonymous have hacked all Russia's state TV:

Massive response locally to the ukranian refugee relief appeal

Good job. Because nationally our government response is a disgrace

I'm so ashamed of our elected representatives

AuldAlliance · 07/03/2022 13:55

I know it's not the done thing to point out people's spelling mistakes, but this is the Minister for Culture, ffs:
twitter.com/NadineDorries/status/1500521963642630148?s=20&t=-DORfVvWWbC-w5Tjy8Sxwg
(Or is she trying to get Ukraine to rhyme with plan?)

DGRossetti · 07/03/2022 14:05

I know it's not the done thing to point out people's spelling mistakes,

That's not quite true (for myself). I'm pretty relaxed on social media, and where it's (a) not critical and (b) highly likely to have been spearchucked to death.

However, there is still a place for good spelling, grammar and punctuation. Your cv, for example. I have and will happily bin any cv with a spelling mistake,. Which I have discovered is a dual purpose filter, if someone thinks I give two shits about anyones spelling. Which I don't.

Then there's always en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muphry%27s_law

I saw the real one on the other thread and thought it was a joke. It feels like we are in an episode of The Thick of It.

I'm ashamed at the UK's response to the Ukraine refugee crisis (and the other refugee crises), my MP is not a Conservative but I think I should write to them anyway. What else can we do? Already donated to DEC appeal and thought about how to reduce our energy consumption.

On the Ukraine invasion thread… This thread has definitely taken a Westministenders' turn which is disappointing. Several posters are suddenly popping up from over there with the Tory stick

Well first of all, it’s Brexit Mega now, not Westminstenders. Secondly, anyone who posts here must stay here and no posting your thoughts on any other threads… got that!? Unless, they refrain from any mention of how brilliant the Tories have done in relation to helping refugees. In that case, I believe you can post away.

I think it's a bit off to be using this thread to slag off posters on another.

If you take issue with the substance of their comments, perhaps better to take up the issues on that thread?

AuldAlliance · 08/03/2022 08:17

I realise this may be criticised as a distraction, but I'm posting a link to a song recorded by Czech, Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian artists in the Czech Republic. It's based on a fusion of two Ukrainian songs by Okean Elzy, one of Ukraine's biggest rock bands, and has been recorded to raise money for a charity providing assistance to Ukrainian refugees in neighbouring countries. There are English subtitles.

DuncinToffee · 08/03/2022 08:29

Mentioning it is not slagging of Rose

DGRossetti · 08/03/2022 10:02

I had a meltdown driving home yesterday. R4 was describing how refugees had to cross a river on foot as the bridge had been blown by their own side to prevent Russian advances. They described an elderly lady trying to walk on the rocks and it highlighted how someone like my DW - in a wheelchair and half blind - would certainly not be going anywhere. Also served to make me think that not everyone staying behind has a choice.

Would I pack a gun - or guns ? I really don't know. But I do know there will be people who will be facing a terrible dilemma when they see the tanks roll past. The sort of dilemma that saving two bullets might resolve.

Anyway, enough of that nonsense;. Cynic batteries recharged and ready to deploy against the clusterfuck of Brexit. On this thread or any other where it has a relevance. Returning to "the other thread(s)" - you don't get to fuck this country over, and then try to pretend it never happened. Especially when we are saddled with the most corrupt, venal and inhumane administration in living memory. In the same way Americans don't get to forget about McCarthyism and the damages it did right into the 70s and 80s.

I shared this tweet from Jessica Elgot yesterday

Quite interesting to see so many people acting surprised about the Ukrainian visa offer or calling it a shambles. This is the post-Brexit immigration policy as it was designed to operate - keeping it as closed as possible to refugees and asylum seekers.

This is what people voted for.

HappyWinter · 08/03/2022 12:09

I get that people don't want to hear about politics, but like others have pointed out, the political environment is why the UK is holding back from helping Ukrainian refugees as much as other European countries. The anti-immigration rhetoric is having consequences.
