What's the end game likely to be for the Conservatives if Mr Johnson does go?

They will dump all their woes on him, to rebrand themselves. The narrative will be "oh that ? That was all BoJo - what a ridiculous name he called himself by incidentally. Oh ? They're pristine. Like fresh snow. That's^ why you can trust us now."

I look forward to the candidates for local elections to be announced. As it gives me a legitimate reason to email our Tory ones to say "would love to vote for yous, but as long as that lying piece of shit still leads you .... no can do.".

borntobequiet · 18/01/2022 08:48

I think much of the panic among the Tories is that the remaining more decent and sensible ones among them have realised that the party has broadly reformed itself into a party in BJ’s image, carrying his brand so prominently that they’ll never be rid of it. How can anyone other than diehard Boris fans or very foolish people have faith in them now? There are enough of these to ensure a modicum of support, which will keep them going, but they’ve lost all credibility. And what person would want to lead them at present? I vote Nadine D for maximum destructive effect. I listened to her speaking about the Policing Bill. Her articulation had a weird disconnect with the meaning of the words she was reading. It was as though she didn’t properly understand what she was saying.

Stepford Tories ?

DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 09:07

I see the Lords kicked the Policing bill around a bit.

Why on earth do we need a law to get the police to tell the fucking truth ?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60032465

Peers voted for new amendments to the bill that would:

scrap the power to impose conditions on protest marches judged to be too noisy
protect Parliament Square as a place to protest
require police officers to tell the truth in public inquiries
demand an urgent review into the prevalence of drink-spiking offences
restrict the imposition of tougher sentences for blocking a highway to major routes and motorways (rather than all roads)
scrap the Vagrancy Act 1824, which makes it a crime to beg as well as sleep rough
make misogyny a hate crime by giving the courts the power to treat misogyny as an aggravating factor in any crime and increase sentences accordingly

Much like Trump did. Can the brand survive without its demagogue though?

Peregrina · 18/01/2022 09:22

I can just imagine how mardy the Johnsons will be when Boris gets dumped as the PM. Have to leave Downing Street and worse, living it up at Chequers. Yes, they will still be able to decorate their town house with wallpaper a £820 a roll, but who will stump up the cost, when they are no longer buying a PM's influence?

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2022 09:24

Watching some clips of Raab doing the rounds this morning,

“If a Minister lies to Parliament do you believe they should resign. Dominic Raab responds with: “it probably depends on the context”

Guess this is another version of 'specific and limited way'

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2022 09:28

I am glad about that DGR

I saw the Labour Lords UK tweet before reading your link

BREAKING: Govt defeated for 11th time today on #PolicingBill as Peers vote 205-141 to prevent Amendt 154 which creates protest-related offence of 'stop & search powers with suspicion' being added to the bill.

DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 09:30

'stop & search powers with suspicion'

We could call them "sus laws" for short.

Peregrina · 18/01/2022 09:31

Has anyone else had a YouGov survey asking whether Boris should resign?

I mostly ignore them, this time I completed it.

Words · 18/01/2022 09:48

@borntobequiet

I have noticed that about ND too. Total disconnect, between the meaning of the words and her intonation.

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2022 09:52

Do you have to sign up to receive those surveys?
AuldAlliance · 18/01/2022 10:52

Speaking of ND "speaking", did anyone spot this charming moment?
