Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

Not so sure the public is remaining oblivious to the Government’s latest self-serving move. It’s been highly criticised on most of the front pages this morning, and even the Mail is on the warpath!

Pan2 · 04/11/2021 07:57

Though.... it says MPs NOT tory ones specifically. So the public will accept the system is corrupt...and Johnson will sort it out for them.....

jgw1 · 04/11/2021 07:58

@HannibalHayeski

From Twitter;

2019 : Owen Paterson says EU is corrupt and anti democratic

2021: Owen Paterson let off for accepting bribes by Toris in parliament

Paterson probably assumes that the EU is corrupt because he is...
Pan2 · 04/11/2021 07:59

What is Pan talking about?? It clearly says in the article tory MPs......Lordy, why doesn't he read the article before posting? Weird.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 08:23

Sorry, why are we sending carcasses to the EU for butchering? Shouldn't we be sending them to Australia and New Zealand because those are the ones we want to have trading relationships with? Grin

prettybird · 04/11/2021 08:24

I see the point I think that Pan2 is making: most people only read the headlines and maybe the first paragraph. But the impression that people absorb is the headline: which is that MPs in general have descended into sleaze and corruption. Angry Not that it was just the Conservatives (and not even all of them Hmm) who voted for this Angry

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 08:25

Well the headline leaves out Tory and that is what people will read, so you have a point Pan Smile

Pan2 · 04/11/2021 08:29

Thanks Dunc. I will still have a word with him.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 08:52

I think what will happen is that Tory voters will know this is a Tory MP but will come out with some Whataboury about Labour MPs, and declare that they are all the same.

I honestly don't think they are - even the Tories used to have MPs who tried to be honest and decent.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 08:58

I did see an attempt at 'what about Labour' on twitter but it didn't seem to get very far. Lots of posts explaining pairing might be why.

The MN Tory supporters are very quiet at the moment.

HannibalHayeski · 04/11/2021 09:19

Yeah, where's Comical Clavi to rant about something going on in Poland at the moment?

HannibalHayeski · 04/11/2021 09:20

(When I say "rant" I really mean "Cut & paste reams of meaningless and unrelated drivel")

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 09:34

This seems to be what is behind the Paterson business. Johnson himself could be caught by it sooner or later. IMO it's only luck so far that he's got away with it.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 09:53

Face palm

Kwasi Kwarteng - We've been discussing getting a right of appeal for years

Nick Robinson - How long have we had a conservative government?

Kwasi Kwarteng - 6 years 🤦

Kwarteng is basically saying that the 5 years of the Coalition wasn't a Conservative government. Which is weaselly bollocks, but what else would you expect from thelikes of him?
Peregrina · 04/11/2021 10:41

But even so, 6 years is ample time to have changed the rules if they didn't like them, and Covid didn't hit the UK until 2020 so they can't use that as much of an excuse.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 10:50

Well

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall
And now it looks like the government is about to accept that the new committee is unviable. What a 24 hours.

grannycake · 04/11/2021 10:50

Fastest U turn yet - does this mean the Patteron suspension will go ahead?
www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/nov/04/boris-johnson-makes-u-turn-over-anti-sleaze-regime-for-mps-owen-paterson

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 10:57

Sam Coates Sky
NEW: There WILL be a vote, probably before recess, on Owen Paterson being suspended for 30 days

This is a "full fat" uturn, I understand

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 11:14

With an 80 majority isn't it certain that they will vote not to suspend him?

Or will some discover a conscience take notice of angry letters from constituents threatening not to vote for them and vote for suspension?

jgw1 · 04/11/2021 11:46

@Peregrina

All of us who have spineless Tory MPs had best get writing those letters then.
UltimateFoole · 04/11/2021 12:06

Wow! - Imagine how much political capital the Johnson government has burned up by whipping all those Tory MPs to publicly debase themselves by voting for corruption.

And now they're doing a handbrake turn. Grin

It would take a heart of stone etc, etc...

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 12:24

Most people wouldn't have given it a second thought if Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Leasdom and Co hadn't tried to pull this stunt. He would have been suspended, the local parties would have made damn sure that there was enough support for a recall petition, and the by-election would probably be held on the same day as the one for Brokenshire's old seat, and Amess's old seat (if one was necessary) and the vast majority of the public would be none the wiser.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 12:34

No surprise that Johnson's Spanish holiday was a freebe paid for by Zak Goldsmith.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 12:44

Coincidence that Johnson reportedly had dinner with Paterson ally Charles Moore, right before the three line whip?
