Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

When the COP fails I guarantee that De Spaffle won't take any of the blame.

He is now cracking on to be a convert to the cause of Climate Change - the facts change he said. No, the facts have not changed - people have been saying them loud and clear for twenty or more years. What has changed is that you are hosting the summit and that you realise it's a cause which the public support. Support in principle, that is; in practice it's hard to know what to do.

Meanwhile, India and the UK begin trade negotiations

"When the COP fails I guarantee that De Spaffle won't take any of the blame."

See BBC News
PM Boris Johnson says he is "not in favour" of a proposed UK coal mine, but that the decision "is not mine to make", ahead of the landmark climate change conference in Glasgow

That's why he's escalating the situation with France over fishing. If by some miracle he gets a COP agreement the fishing issue will be magically resolved so that nothing knocks his COP victory off the front pages. If COP fails, nobidy will notice as it'll be all out trade war with the French as cover.

India only wants - and will get - one thing from this. Unlimited visas and lengths of stays. Anything else is window dressing.

And what India gets, Pakistan has to get too.

It's years since I had a decent curry.

Here is take on the fishing dispute.

It's not clear who Liz Truss is threatening to take action against, the EU, or France? There doesn't seem any provision for her to do anything with what was then 48 hours, but I think should now be tomorrow.

It looks like another mess.

Stop press, I see from the comments someone is saying that the British Government has just capitulated. If so, it does rather remind me of 'the row of the summer' back then, when after a few hours, whoever it was gave in.

Peregrina · 01/11/2021 17:52

But then the plot thickens - Truss now says that they will go to the dispute resolution mechanism, but that 'they must....blah, blah.' That in my book, isn't how you resolve disputes. It should be 'Our case is.... we are asking....' and it's for the resolution panel to decide.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 01/11/2021 18:02

Thanks prettybird.

Brindle88 · 01/11/2021 18:14

Harping on about legal action so their gammon fans don’t cotton on to the fact they have backed down, in my opinion.

HarrietPierce · 01/11/2021 18:20

I just saw somewhere the UK had given around 100 licences to French fishing boats but can't locate it now.

That sort of makes some sort of sense :D

It was a headline in the Express

'Boris caves on France, more than 100 extra fishing licences issued since Macron' s threats'

HarrietPierce · 01/11/2021 19:01

Thanks DuncinToffee I imagine they are trying to keep their capitulation somewhat quiet in line with what Brindle88 said.

DGRossetti · 01/11/2021 19:01

It was a headline in the Express

They are having a wretched time of it, really.

FatCatThinCat · 01/11/2021 19:02

The problem is that the French are threatening to impliment the law fully as opposed to half-heartedly. How is the UK going to sue them for that? To bring forward a case you've got to at least claim that the law is being broken. Your grievance can't be that they're implimenting it fully. Idiots!

Peregrina · 01/11/2021 19:35

On one BBC page I saw a clip of Truss threatening the French or else. On another I saw that the Jersey Government had issued temporary licences to the disputed boats - kicking the can down the road no doubt. But if they genuinely have been fishing there for donkeys years, the people in Jersey will know that.

You would think that the BBC might try to get its pages consistent!

HannibalHayeski · 01/11/2021 19:38

But we're Global Britain! We're freed from the shackles of the EU! We hold all the cards don'tcha know! We're Prospering Mightily!

How can they possibly punish us?...

borntobequiet · 02/11/2021 08:17

Recently I encountered some screen reading software used to enable accessibility in exams. It’s supposed to read without tone, emphasis or nuance. I thought it was pretty awful actually, and was immediately struck by how much it sounded like Liz Truss. It managed to introduce pauses in inappropriate places in exactly the same way she does.
