Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

@Peregrina

No surprise that Johnson's Spanish holiday was a freebe paid for by Zak Goldsmith.
I am interested in this suggestion that MPs should be treated with regard to the right of appeal in a similar way to people in other walks of life. Ok fair enough, give them a right of appeal. In exchange MPs should then be expect to work like other people in other walks of life, who do not have time for other jobs, and who under the bribery act which forbids such freebie holidays and hospitality.

Owen Paterson has resigned as MP, saying he "will remain a public servant but outside the cruel world of politics" avoiding the humiliation of a Parliamentary vote Hmm

Lordship incoming? Wink

The "honourable" thing for Mr Patterson to have done note the past tense would be admit his guilt and either pay the money back or donate it to charity once his duplicity had been discovered.
Being found guilty after a lengthy enquiry and then getting your mates to cover your arse to protect your parliamentary seat is not honourable in any sense of the word.

But he isn't guilty of anything. Loads of MPs are up to the same, why has there been this cruel witch-hunt against Mr Paterson who has just done what anyone would to do feather his own nest.
prettybird · 04/11/2021 15:09

I do get the impression that Owen Paterson genuinely doesn't think that he has done anything wrong Confused

I've heard him say he would do the same again and that he would continue to take money from these firms l as "they're good firms" Hmm completely missing and thereby proving the point Angry

This was obviously before he resigned. I wonder if they'll continue to pay him? Hmm

The stupid thing about this, is that if they had just allowed the suspension to go through, the recall would have happened but being a pig with a blue rosette seat, there might not have been enough support to trigger a by-election. He would have carried on as an MP and it would all have been forgotten, being replaced by the next scandal.

Now we all know how corrupt they have become. So Moggy and Bozo rather shot themselves in the foot there. (Maybe, because they are clever at wriggling out of things.)

borntobequiet · 04/11/2021 17:34

Agree Peregrina. Even if recalled, he’d have stood a good chance of winning a by-election in such a safe seat and would then have been able to claim all sorts of moral advantage.
As it is, he’s a victim of his own and his leader’s hubris, dishonesty and attempts to manipulate the system.

prettybird · 04/11/2021 17:35

(Maybe, because they [Moggy and BoZo] are clever at wriggling out of things.)

They'll turn it around and say it was all nasty Labour and the mean SNP's fault because they refused to participate in the new cross-party committee to create a new standards framework Confused

Smug today was saying in the House today, in his irritating laconic fashion, that standards are a cross-party issue and that the House yesterday "voted very clearly that it showed it was very worried about the process" Hmm. If he truly believed that, then the Tory Party wouldn't have issue a three-line Whip on the matter so that the MPs could vote according to what they believed to be "right". Nor would they have done so a) so blatantly to avoid the sanction of "one of their own" and b) when what should have been a rubber-stamping vote through Parliament meant that many MPs were not in the House (eg they were up at COP26) Hmm

They think they are clever at wriggling out of things, turns out that perhaps they aren't quite as clever as they think.

I live in hope that at some point soon there will be a sudden tipping point and their popularity will plummet.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 19:00

But at least it takes the Brexit shambles off the front page for a couple of days.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 19:03

I saw that France released the British trawler, no bond to be paid.

Is that the bad news that had to be buried at the expense of Paterson?
DGRossetti · 04/11/2021 19:25

All Kwarteng did on R4 was blather on about climate change being "proof" that the government is acting to the highest standards of probity and integrity and all Nick Robinson did was allow him to blather on about honouring manifesto pledges as proof they're a nice bunch without a murmur about tax rises and triple locks.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 19:57

Well the fishing dispute ends in stalemate

So not a sterling success for Johnson and Frost then.

HannibalHayeski · 04/11/2021 21:46

From twitter;

+UPDATE+

Several MPs have told media contacts that “levelling up funding for their constituencies was threatened” if they didn’t vote to back the corrupt MP Owen Paterson yesterday.

This is why so many Tory MPs voted for Paterson while simultaneously briefing against Johnson.

Peregrina · 04/11/2021 22:04

They must be feeling like prize fools now.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2021 22:09

Angela Richardson used the hashtag 'levelling up' when she tweeted that she was reinstated

As an aside, I hope we're all prepared for the next wave of Covid. Tumbleweed in our local booster vaccine centre for the past few weeks apparently.

I'm guessing a lot of people believe they have "got Covid done" and don't need to waste a few minutes on a free third jab.

Let's see what happens.

FrankieStein403 · 05/11/2021 08:00

In my case I booked for next week because of half term, didn't want to leave small child etc - just sayin'

pointythings · 05/11/2021 08:26

When I had mine a couple of weeks ago, it was rammed with queues out the door - local GP surgeries coordinated and contacted everyone eligible on their books. But I'm in a small town where that was feasible.

prettybird · 05/11/2021 08:44

Dh and I have just tested positive for Covid Shock - after having been to two big funerals (one on Friday in Newcastle and one on Monday in Glasgow), plus a Halloween Party on Saturday. Test & Protect says I was infectious from Monday (symptoms on Wednesday). Ds came down on Sunday to go to Monday's funeral and we drove him up to Aberdeen on Tuesday, so he has to get a PCR. We had lunch with my 84 year on Wednesday at his home so he also needs a PCR. Plus we'd put someone from London up for two nights at the last minute as she was moderating at COP26.

Fortunately we are all double vaccinated- but it shows just how easily it can spread. Sad

I just feel like I have a bad cold - actually not as bad as the mega-cold I had a few weeks ago. A bit of a temperature on Wednesday and sneezing a lot though. Dh got symptoms before me so I suspect I got it from me - but he's not been as rigorous as me at doing LFTs and had just through it was the cold again.

Sorry to hear that prettybird Flowers

I know of someone who’s just caught covid for the 3rd time although she was double vacc’ed (a teacher). There’s talk of a new variant plus despite cop26 being desperately important, it’s not going to help bringing in folks from all around the world.

Why are not some measures being brought back in?
