Brexit

Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

here's another Brexit benefit - come on, Louise, tell us that it's pure coincidence that these people are being targeted for investigations and being left without their benefits. And tell us how it's OK that they have to prove that they are innocent rather than the DWP having to prove they are guilty of defrauding the benefits system.

God, this country is making me sick.

If you are waiting for me to leap to their defence rather than siding with the DWP...then you are in for a long wait.
prettybird · 06/12/2021 23:27

...and to think that I used to defend LouiseCollins28 ..... Hmm

She used to seem to be a Brexiter who had given some thought to her support of the indefensible for Brexit, rather than claiming that the FDA has the best interests of consumers at heart and thinking that the UK could feed itself. Confused

I would say, "Bless....." if it weren't so serious Sad

"It was over 12 months ago"

Clearly there was an even bigger bash at Halloween 2020 that the press haven't heard about yet.

mathanxiety · 07/12/2021 05:58

The evicted Bulgarians and Poles haven't been sending big cheques to the Conservative and Unionist Party treasurer.

Most of those affected were single mothers working part-time in low-paid jobs, who relied on universal credit to supplement rent payments, she said. Many of them had been forced to use food banks, and some had been made homeless as a result of their rent arrears

These are foreign kids, so who cares :(

They should have done the decent thing and gone back to where they belong. The whole point of Brexit is that we can control our borders and stop foreigners we don't like coming here.
DGRossetti · 07/12/2021 07:37

Is the rape clause still in place for child benefit ?

HannibalHayeski · 07/12/2021 07:55

LouiseCollins' mask has slipped. She's finally admitted what we all knew the vote was about all along; "Immigration".

How many many times have we had Brexshitteers on here telling us that they weren't all racist, and yet, time after time, it comes back to this...

pointythings · 07/12/2021 08:35

I can't get over the fact that anyone claiming to be an actual human being thinks it's OK to treat people worse just based on their nationality. We all know how utterly malevolent and incompetent the DWP is - but that's OK if it's directed at foreigners.

It really was all about getting the foreigners out, wasn't it, Louise?

Peregrina · 07/12/2021 09:14

North Shropshire was very Brexity. Here are two ex Tory Councillors who have left the party to join versions of UKIP. One of whom thinks the Tory party has lost control of immigration.

When we see Brexiters out on the streets demanding that £350 million a week we were promised for the NHS, we will know it wasn't all about immigration. I haven't seen that yet.

The Tory party lost control on immigration because the will of the people was for us to leave the EU. Not the Tory parties fault at all you see.

Where did I even suggest anything about "OK to treat people worse because of their nationality?" lol.

People who are apparently trying to defraud the benefits system...should be treated like people who are apparently trying to defraud the benefits system, no matter what their country of origin.

pointythings · 07/12/2021 09:50

So you genuinely believe that it's coincidence that 28 out of 30 cases involved EU nationals?

And you think the DWP are reasonable and competent?

Peregrina · 07/12/2021 10:20

From what I read it wasn't any old EU national, it was specifically Bulgarians. Are they really more dishonest than other people? I very much doubt it. It does look as though a more vulnerable group has been picked upon.

But Tory friends defrauding the furlough system or having strings pulled via VIP lanes for Covid contracts, where literally millions have gone astray. Why that is all hunky dory, apparently.

Peregrina · 07/12/2021 10:26

And let's not start on that scrounger who is the current incumbent of No 10. When the next crisis blows up, he will clear out on a holiday paid for by his mates.

LouiseCollins28 · 07/12/2021 12:15

I beleive that a lettings agency renting property "to Bulgarian tennants in London". when they report problems with UC being suspended, is likely to be reporting a problem that primarily affects Bulgarian nationals.

40 tennants with UC suspensions 38 Bulgarians and 2 Poles apparently. However, how many of the agency's tennants are affected? The article doesn't say. Numbers it gives are 40, 38+2. They might have 400 tennants with UC suspensions of whom the Bulgarians amount to fewer than 1 in 10, it's typical Guardian nonsense with numbers.

Amelia Gentleman's article is soo bad that it contradicts itself more than one. I'll let you find those little gems all on your own.

I've now way of knowing personally if the DWP are reasonable and competent or not I'm afraid. I've literally never dealt with them for anything.
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 07/12/2021 12:34

Louise, you say you've never dealt with DWP yourself, yet you automatically side with them? That implies you automatically assume the Bulgarians are at fault. But you expect us to believe you are not racist. OK....

If racists could devote 1% of the effort they put into trying to pretend they are not racists towards being better human beings, it would be a step closer to paradise.

English mind you. Not even "British" ...

I didn't find it 'soo bad' so perhaps you would like to elabourate on the contradictions you find.

The DWP spokesperson at the end effectively makes a suggestion that all Bulgarians are criminals.

Peregrina · 07/12/2021 13:15

And of course Amelia Gentleman exposed the Windrush scandal - no doubt people thought that people of W Indies descent were being discriminated against, and which the HO would have denied. It needs someone to pull at the details together, which she does.
