Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

My son is at University in a nordic country. Last week they had a seminar on supply chain issues and the tutor asked for examples. Every single one was a problem in the UK. No one thought of examples elsewhere in the EU. My son is the only Brit on the course.

I noticed that they're all mentioning Biden resting his eyes for a moment and not a whisper about Johnson doing the same.

HarrietPierce · 02/11/2021 12:26

"I noticed that they're all mentioning Biden resting his eyes for a moment and not a whisper about Johnson doing the same."

At least Biden is masked and sleeps a hell of a lot tidily than Johnson!

I laughed no end at your tidy sleeping comment.

He was indeed quite untidy.

I can imagine it’s exhausting at COP. But what is absolutely unforgivable is sitting next to 95-year old national treasure David Attenborough, without a mask.

No words.

HarrietPierce · 02/11/2021 21:59

This woman from CNN confronts Johnson re not wearing a mask and sitting next to 95 year old David Attenborough. His attempt to wriggle out of it is ridiculous.

Christiane Amanpour is a superstar at CNN and clearly has little regard for Johnson, quite rightly. He certainly looks shifty as hell there. Increasingly he reminds me of Mr Toad, dressed up as a washerwoman, fleeing prison after being banged up due to his own recklessness and incompetence.

borntobequiet · 03/11/2021 07:26

Oh and Johnson had to do something to appeal to his supporters, who are often climate change deniers and Covid sceptics.
Given he was hosting the most important climate conference in recent times and promoting a green agenda, the only thing he could do as a nod towards his base was pathetically not wear a mask.

@FatCatThinCat

The problem is that the French are threatening to impliment the law fully as opposed to half-heartedly. How is the UK going to sue them for that? To bring forward a case you've got to at least claim that the law is being broken. Your grievance can't be that they're implimenting it fully. Idiots!
Presumably if they were to bring a case it would be to the ECJ. The same ECJ that is so bad and nasty we had to leave the EU because of it. The same ECJ that couldn't possibly resolve disputes about Northern Ireland...
DrBlackbird · 03/11/2021 13:14

Any thoughts on what’s happening today with Owen Paterson? What’s this reference to ‘natural justice’ that keeps getting mentioned? Seems Johnson can use his majority to change parliamentary rules on standards…

beentoldcomputersaysno · 03/11/2021 13:20

It's scary isn't it?

pointythings · 03/11/2021 13:28

Well, this isn't at all the return of sleaze, is it? Hmm

Tories voting to let Tories get away with corruption - who would have thought?

wewereliars · 03/11/2021 13:40

I think that the Tories have realised that they can get away with pretty much anything, without any or any real accountability from any quarter, so they are. God help us.

Brindle88 · 03/11/2021 13:55

It’s quite scary. I’m starting to understand how people who could see through the Nazis must have felt.

Peregrina · 03/11/2021 14:05

It really is scary isn't it? It's easy to imagine how the apologists for Johnson who come on these threads would be SCREAMING if a Labour Government had even thought of the idea.

The Johnson apologists have been a bit quiet for the last few weeks though.

I'm not particularly affiliated to any party, but this government is beyond corrupt on so many levels.
Peregrina · 03/11/2021 14:17

but this government is beyond corrupt on so many levels.

But they still seem to be winning votes. I hope that Owen Paterson's electorate decide to kick him out at the next election. Ditto with Matt Hancock. Although I suspect that in both cases they will probably not stand again, and go off to find a well paid consultancy somewhere.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 03/11/2021 16:07

There are so many things to call this government out on. I don't understand why opposition parties aren't doing this strongly.

DuncinToffee · 03/11/2021 16:37

Leadsom's amendment was supported 250 votes to 232.

13 Conservative MPs who broke the whip and voted against the amendment

Aaron Bell
Jackie Doyle-Price
Richard Fuller
Kate Griffiths
Mark Harper
Simon Hoare
Kevin Hollinrake
Nigel Mills
Jill Mortimer
Holly Humby-Croft
Matthew Offord
John Stevenson
William Wragg

a further 80 abstained

Corruption in full view.

Peregrina · 03/11/2021 16:47

So 13 Tory MPs have a conscience. Another 80 know they have a conscience somewhere, but have mislaid it. As for the rest - Corruption Rules OK, as long as it's Tory Party Corruption. The worst thing is, they will get away with it, because if an MP of any other party tries it on, the Tories will make sure that he or she is suspended.

Peregrina · 03/11/2021 16:49

Do I take it that non of the Opposition Parties voted with the Government?

DuncinToffee · 03/11/2021 16:53

These are the MP's who voted in favour

DuncinToffee · 03/11/2021 16:56

Yes only Tories vote 'Aye`

Place catting with my gorgeous boy ( recovering from abscess hence lopsided look he's styling out valiantly.)

Pointy what a beautiful girl.

Thanks as ever folks for this oasis of sanity in a mad world.

borntobequiet · 03/11/2021 17:05

I keep thinking it can’t get worse and then it does.
My normally spineless Tory MP might have abstained, not that that’s much consolation.
