Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

Eggwina Currie did suggest checking if we have a qualification we're not using, in order to get a better job. Hmm

Maybe we've got law degrees that we'd forgotten about Confused

Ouch!

Statement from the US Ad Hoc Committee to Protect the GFA.

"We urge President Biden...to tell the British government in no uncertain terms that a cold frost will descend on US/UK relations if the Good Friday Agreement is placed in any further jeopardy."

Interesting choice of words ...

When it's raining one horror after another, it may be possible to not faint in horror that ANOTHER COUNTRY is putting the UK on notice not to bring bloodshed on to its own citizens' heads. For laffs

We are living through an episode of Black Mirror.

We are living through an episode of Black Mirror.

It’s all so bloody relentless, the misery upon misery nearly every sodding day it’s like living in a never ending nightmare, to say I’m depressed is an understatement.
wewereliars · 11/11/2021 19:47

Yes, I have to avoid the news dontcallmelen, only so much I can take.

I thought Thatcher was the epitome of morally bankrupt leadership in the mid 80s, aimed at " the strivers" and those who could grab a toe hold in the neo con " fuck you I m all right Jack" era,

and I would have marched against the Iraq war in 2002/2003 had I not been 9 months pregnant/ had a newborn. At that point I hated Blair and the New Labour project.

But this is a whole new bottomless pit of horror..

You know it's bad when you would swop Boris for Thatcher.

TheABC · 11/11/2021 21:26

I am ideally wondering if Johnson has ever felt regret. I know he has no shame, guilt or innocence.

Yep. Probably not.

Ex-Tory adviser married to Tory MP will choose ex-Tory tabloid editor to chair Ofcom
HannibalHayeski · 11/11/2021 23:56

Oh dear. The Tory MP who told Marcus Rashford he should stick to his day job instead of trying to feed starving children that the Tories don't give a shit about, has another job...

Peregrina · 12/11/2021 08:20

I have just seen a post on Facebook where someone is suggesting that for every £1 MPs earn from outside jobs, they lose 63p of their MP's salary, pointing out that if it's fair for those on Universal Credit, it must be OK.

But that's the thing - the wealthy need tax breaks as an incentive to work, the poor need a kick in the teeth, is what they believe.

DuncinToffee · 12/11/2021 09:05

Five ministers in Boris Johnson’s government are among a group of MPs who have claimed more than £1m from the taxpayer to cover their rent payments, while letting properties that they own in London.

Some 17 landlord MPs – 15 Conservatives and two Labour – have put their housing costs on expenses while earning more than £10,000 a year each renting out their own properties in recent years.

@prettybird

I bet the Germans are buying those 2nd homes for a song Wink
I'm not sure if your post were being cheeky but in case it was serious, no, the Germans are not buying 2nd homes cheap in Spain. Housing prices specially 2nd hand have been raising steadily - 2% in the last trimester on top of the 3.1% the trimester before.

British 2nd homes in Spain have been declining since 2010 with housing prices going up and people on a state pension no longer being able to afford living in Spain.

Brexit has just delivered the final blow.

prettybird · 12/11/2021 09:41

Of course It was tongue in cheek Confused

Consequences of Brexit coming home to roost Sad. So much for Spain "needing" the UK more than we need them. Hmm

I think we all know by now that Spain didn't need UK retirees. Brexit has been good for Spain in this aspect, we will no longer have an older British population accessing full social benefits but a younger fully employed tax payer like the rest of Spaniards.

But as I mentioned, the downward trend of British retiring in Spain is not "only" due to Brexit. The downward spiral started after 2010 when living standards in the UK declined while the rest of Europe, including Spain, raised. .

What an earth happened in 2010 to course this?

prettybird · 12/11/2021 12:03

Iirc, the UK and (?) Greece were the only EU at the time countries where wages had still not recovered to 2008 levels, while the rest of Europe, after a couple of challenging years after the Financial Crisis had gone on to grow their average salaries. The UK is exceptional - just not exceptionally good Sad

This was illustrated again yesterday on the news (can't remember if it was Sky or BBC) with a graph showing no real growth in the years since 2016 (I wonder what happened then Hmm) before Covid, the big dip due to lowdown, the rebound and then the oscillation back to effectively no real growth. Sad

Ah yes, 2010 the golden years of Corbyn's premiership. Shame that he was too busy funding his mates holiday homes to concentrate on running the country.
