I too am keeping an eye on local election results. I don't see a clear pattern, mostly existing parties holding seats, which suggests stasis rather than anything else.

Lonelycrab · 14/10/2021 09:59

So despite some pretty large concessions from the EU wrt NI, the government are going to tell them to fuck off, aren’t they.

And then we’re in full trade war territory. Is that where we’re heading?Sad

vera99 · 14/10/2021 10:03

Well well well this video of Frosty from 2015 surfaces of the value of the Single Market to the UK. When he opens his mouth now we are in Prince Andrew territory.

Lorna O'Leary

The EU doesn't care how this Protocol offer is sold in British tabloids - a defeat, a humiliation, whatever - if it works.
It's not for London. It's for the people of Northern Ireland, seen as a much more pragmatic and sympathetic group.

All politicians lie vera

That's the usual reply anyway...

julieca · 14/10/2021 10:14

They think a trade war with the EU will help them get re-elected.
Yaay we are at war!!! We can take on the French and Germans and Boris Johnson can be Winston Churchill steering this plucky island to win a war against those bloody foreigners.

vera99 · 14/10/2021 10:22

Johnson's bunch though have raised it to a staggering new level of on the hoof utterly provable lies in real-time. The speaker should allow the word to be used now as in "The Prime Minister is a lying corrupt bastard" go on Sir Keir try it out in front of the mirror.

A trade war with your nearest neighbours, whom you rely on to feed your population.
Cracking plan all round.

julieca · 14/10/2021 10:34

@AuldAlliance it will lead to food shortages. But I can see the Express and Mail loving it. And it will be all the EUs fault. Boris Johnson always wanted to be Churchill after all.

julieca · 14/10/2021 10:36

And the Tory bots on here will say Brits are too fat anyway so food shortages will do us good and save the NHS. Expect lots of data about diabetes and the cost to the NHS. And anyone saying we should compromise and work with the EU will be accused of being Chamberlain appeasing the Nazis.

That is exactly what they are thinking, and sadly they are likely to be right. The English sense of entitlement is not to be underestimated.
vera99 · 14/10/2021 10:53

The Tory bots are having a holiday. No need for them to panic either if the polls are to be believed.

Time to panic buy for Christmas. This appeared in my YT feed Mark E. Smith late of the Fall did a Xmas ad for Woolworth's in 1980 - the prices were eye-watering compared to wages at the time.

@borntobequiet

I’m sure that people would be happy to hear what Labour had to say if they said anything different, definite, coherent or convincing. But they don’t, and I think it’s because they’re notable to.
I'm hoping, so soon after their conference they are formulating their plan and policies carefully, looking towards the next GE, and that we'll see a more confident, solid message from them ere long

I emphasise the 'hoping' bit!

We need Labour/LD/Greens to work together for the next GE.

AuldAlliance · 14/10/2021 11:02

WTF does it say about a nation's psyche when its leaders repeatedly claim that a time of warfare, death and deprivation was a halcyon period we should aim to reenact - and 41% of the electorate think 'sounds good to me - who needs safety and food anyway'?

100% agree.

It’s not going to happen though, is it.

a) YouGov is a Tory project b) I think that polling is mostly used to influence voters, rather than reflect the actual views of voters, probably related to a) c) How can anyone look at that "polling" and NOT think "We must form an electoral alliance, it's the only way"?
vera99 · 14/10/2021 11:19

I know YouGov is a Tory project co-owned and founded by Nadhim Zahawi no less. But nevertheless, their support is not collapsing. This polls of polls gives them 40%. Time for that electoral alliance like Farage did for the Tories...

I think Johnson just wants the kudos of being PM, and doesn' t give a monkeys about any of it. I don't think he's ideologically driven. I think he is a Trojan horse, and is perfect in that role because he is lazy and unprincipled, and maybe because of the latter is weirdly charismatic.

Now he's in post, the forces behind him can just get on with it.

The ERG are all over this because of their demented racisim and stupidity and for people like Mogg, who has already moved parts of his business to ROI, they want to be rid of pesky EU anti tax avoidance and laundering rules, which are in the way.

There are bigger players behind the scenes here, and it is they who want the EU project weakened, and NI and the UK in disarray because it suits a bigger and worse agenda than a lot of people want to see. My money is on Putin.

There are issues in the UK which have made us easy pickings, the nonense of MSM whch so may believe, the willingness to blame the poor for their problems and the MSM constant scapegoating. It's now the GP's turn it seems.

I think this BS with the NIP is about wrecking the GFA, and trying to blame the EU for it. The EU response has been smart here, but it won't work. Co operation and solutions are not want the UK government want.

And the US is all over this as is well known, so the Tory useful idiots, such as Frost, are really really playing with lighted matches. Maybe that's beginning to dawn on some of the less demented people in the project.

1 When truth becomes irrelevant, as is happening now, we are in deep deep trouble. Historically, the worst tyrants have created a new reality where the truth is what they say it is, nothing more , nothing less.

I think we are pretty much at that point

2 When and by whom is this called out for what it is, treason? and what can be done about it?
