I'm sure Kipling put it best ...

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/reform-leader-richard-tice-to-stand-for-james-brokenshires-old-seat-298968/

when he said the problem with paying the Dane Geld was you never got rid of the Dane.

In this case the Tories utterly capitulated to the shadow of the supposed threat that was UKIP and the **s still aren't satisfied.

Let's just hope the Tory vote doesn't get split, eh ?

Brindle88 · 30/10/2021 21:53

Fingers crossed Grin

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/10/2021 22:13

Solution to the Jersey proposed export-blockade - send it all to the UK please. We might not all be able to feast on fresh crab, but what we can't eat now would make some lovely crab paste, etc for later.

Why export to the EU when you've got millions of people nearby?

HannibalHayeski · 30/10/2021 22:14

Typical Brexhitteer, no idea of geography...

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/10/2021 22:19

What don't I understand about "geography"?

Peregrina · 30/10/2021 22:35

I don't think it's a matter of geography, but personal taste. The French have more of a taste for sea foods that the majority of Britons do.

Still if we can be persuaded to eat raw fish, i.e. sushi, then there should be a big marketing opportunity for a Brexiter to try to convince people in the UK to eat crab regularly.

Peregrina · 30/10/2021 22:40

I hope that either Richard Tice splits the Tory vote, or failing that, loses his deposit.

Having said that, not all of his ideas are totally crackpot e.g. aiming for zero waiting lists and a zero carbon economy.

HannibalHayeski · 30/10/2021 22:44

If you think Jersey is closer to the GB mainland than to France, you don't understand anything about geography. Simples.

HannibalHayeski · 30/10/2021 22:44

A bit like Dominic idiot Raab...

HannibalHayeski · 30/10/2021 22:47

(I must be careful. I've only just got out of Mumsnet prison for being rude about Raab. The Brexshitteers are working to get people banned again.)

Tsk - leaving the fishing grounds, bypassing cherbourg and navigating one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world just reflects 'a little bump' those channel islanders just need a little more positivity

Peregrina · 31/10/2021 07:41

But what I don't understand about the Jersey fishing business, is that the Channel Islands aren't and never have been in the EU. There was a completely separate treaty governing fishing between them and France, so why did that have to be interfered with, except for Brexit purity?

Wouldn't the sensible thing be to quietly ditch the CI provisions that Johnson signed and now wants to rip up, and re-instate the old treaty? Brand it as a huge concession if you like to massage the Brexiters' egos.

What rude thing could you say about Raab that wouldn’t be true (rhetorical question, I don’t want anyone banned)?
pointythings · 31/10/2021 08:56

I've no idea, but I have noticed that when Brexit is going badly, the MN Brexiteers do like to bring out the banhammer.

DGRossetti · 31/10/2021 10:00

The French have more of a taste for sea foods that the majority of Britons do.

And yet Britain is a fucking island ?

Returning to the UKs Poland expedition ... I don't think it's even crossed Boris mind that the UK - now a 3rd country - is presuming to interfere in the internal affairs of another treaty. Which is not the same as a discussion between members. He's acting like the UK is still in the EU !

However he has now opened the door for other nations to discuss Scottish independence with Scotland quite openly. So not all bad.

HannibalHayeski · 31/10/2021 10:11

I've no idea, but I have noticed that when Brexit is going badly, the MN Brexiteers do like to bring out the banhammer.

They do. And Mumsnet seems to be deliriously happy to be manipulated in that way.

prettybird · 31/10/2021 10:17

Unfortunately Poland is in a different category to Scotland: Poland is a sovereign state (which seems to come as a surprise to many Brexiters: that EU member states are still sovereign states Confused) whereas Scotland is not yet Wink a sovereign state Sad. So BJ can legitimately talk to the Polish PM, even if we consider the content of his discussions inadvisable. And he could, legitimately, complain about other countries talking to the Scottish Government about sovereign matters.

See also: the refusal of WM to allow the FM any involvement in COP26 which is being held on her turf because she is not actually a "head of state". Hmm

But I agree with the sentiment DGR and hope that a) the anomalous situation of Scotland is becoming ever more obvious to other (sovereign Wink) states, resulting in greater sympathy of, and support for, our desire for self-determination, aka independence and b) BJ's hypocrisy will come back to bite him on the bum Grin

We can but hope Smile

DGRossetti · 31/10/2021 10:25

A better analogy would be the UK lecturing Texas, as all US states are sovereign.

Either way, I can't see the UK sticking it's nose into other countries affairs around the world being a great direction of travel. Especially after the Matt "no thanks" Hancock affair.

Alternatively, the UK could advise Taiwan on dealing with dodgy foreign neighbours ?

DGRossetti · 31/10/2021 10:41

and more Boris ...

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/watch-pm-ridiculed-over-comments-about-immigration-and-fall-of-rome-299070

Clearly we are lucky to have a PM who can not only steer this country through the most challenging period in centuries, but also has time - presumably in between illicit bonks - to work on research for a new and exciting theory as to why Rome fell. I look forward to his follow up where he explains Constantinople had to be renamed as the west ran out of letters during the dark ages,

Right now, Trump advising people to drink bleach is actually one up from our own head of state.

Way to go, BJ !

DuncinToffee · 31/10/2021 10:50

Benny Hill was trending on twitter......

prettybird · 31/10/2021 11:04

When you read the History article (linked to in the Twitter replies) about the 8 real reasons that the Roman Empire fell, the parallels are more close to the UK's situation than the EU's - and nothing to do with "uncontrolled immigration" Hmm

Examples:
• over reliance on slave labour
• over expansion and military overspending
• Government corruption and political instability

https://www.history.com/news/8-reasons-why-rome-fell

DGRossetti · 31/10/2021 11:09

Rome fell because it ran out of road. Simples. It was an Empire built on expansion, and ultimately, when it couldn't expand anymore (because it's technology wasn't up to it) after a century or two of pushing the bubbles around as much as it could, it collapsed. Inwardly.

The same happened to the British Empire. And is now looming over the empire of Man. We've run out of road.

DrBlackbird · 31/10/2021 11:54

Truss: "We don’t know what they’ll do, they said they wouldn’t introduce these measures until Tuesday probably at the earliest so we will see what they do. But, if they do bring these into place, well, two can play at that game and we reserve the ability to respond in a proportionate way."

Apparently promoting herself as next Tory party leader…Really?! The Trusster? Out of 65 million odd people can we really not find someone better to run the country… Confused

As I understand it the members of the Tory party think it is an amusing game to find a leader worse than the previous one and see if the public will still vote for them.
DrBlackbird · 31/10/2021 12:13

I can think of no other possible explanation jgw1 and they must be terribly amused by how well that game lands with the voting public.

Though I think that they must also get a frisson of excitement with Truss’s tough ‘two can play at that game’ talk.
