Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

The trouble with Johnson fucking off is that the rest of the Tory party is dominated by weirdos, psychopaths, has-beens and incompetents. He is all of these but has some intelligence, a (generally misplaced) desire to do the right thing and some tawdry charisma. Who on earth would replace him?

vera99 · 24/09/2021 19:28

I know and with a very heavy heart I say Jeremy Hunt who would at least try and build a broad church or relative competence, that's the best fag packet idea I can come up with. You wouldn't start from here as the old Irish joke goes.

Well, I got fuel at the second petrol station I tried - the first had no diesel. So I'm sorted - I can get to Reading and back on less than half a tank and am not going far afield next week as I'm off work and want to do minimal stuff.

I like the Megathread thing as well. With Brexit turning to shit as predicted, it's time for a fresh new look.

wewereliars · 24/09/2021 19:43

borntobequiet Johnson wants to do the right thing?
genuinely surprised at you saying that.

I agree he never wants to be the bearer of bad news, for his own ego, but you see a desire to do right?

vera99 · 24/09/2021 19:48

Brexit is popping up in the panic buying petrol thread. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4357770-All-the-people-panic-buying-petrol?

I have a feeling we'll end up with virtually free movement for Europeans to come here but no free movement for our young people going to Europe.

I think there are lots of motives for people to want to do the right thing, and the desire to be liked is one of them.
Peregrina · 24/09/2021 20:40

DH filled up today - we are going away tomorrow and would have filled up before a long journey anyway, but now we will make jolly sure that we always have about half a tank full.

Thanks Brexiters.

Peregrina · 24/09/2021 20:41

and the desire to be liked is one of them.

then I suggest that Johnson is in the wrong job. There are many jobs where making difficult or unpopular decisions are vital, and being PM is one.

prettybird · 24/09/2021 20:45

That's why he's a crap PM - he doesn't like - or delays - making the difficult decisions, even if they're the right decisions, if they're going to be unpopular. Angry

borntobequiet · 24/09/2021 20:47

Ah we know he’s in the wrong job! The difficulty is that he doesn’t know, and neither do his supporters.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 20:49

@Kendodd 'worst of all worlds' is Brexit DNA -it's a given sadly and they hold all the cards. 'THEY' ffs we used to be a member at the top table soon we'll be begging for crumbs.

More on the HGV driver shortage EGM

Speakers at 13/14 minutes and 16 and Cllr Rouane very effective.

SODC is now a hung council (this includes what you would expect to be true blue Henley).

According to a Times column by colorectal stenographer James Forsyth, Boris Johnson is very keen for any emergency wage increases in sectors suffering labour shortages to be explicitly linked to Brexit, which – considering they will further hike inflation and deepen this winter’s cost-of-living crisis – tells you exactly how much Boris “fuck business” Johnson understands about economics. As Forsyth has it: “When a group of influential businessmen tried to bend his ear this month about labour shortages, Johnson simply asked if they had tried paying people more. He regarded that as the end of the conversation.”

Many don’t like the Graun anymore understandably but I still love Marina Hyde…

prettybird · 24/09/2021 22:05

Schrödinger's EU HGV drivers - both available to come to the UK and in short supply in the EU even though they're not experiencing the same problems Confused

vera99 · 24/09/2021 22:07

I so love Marina - she has a laser-guided bomb to any issue like no other. Also love Stewart Lee - here is 3 years ago...

Turns out the Turkeys haven't voted for Christmas. That said I've never liked Turkey an overrated dry fairly tasteless meat.

We haven't had turkey for Christmas in years - we have duck instead. And something vegetarian for DD1.

prettybird · 24/09/2021 23:04

I brine (in a citrus mix) turkey for our Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve (Shock Danish pesky European tradition), when we have family over (pre-Covid - last year we just had our dad as he was in our extended bubble and he couldn't go to SA ). It's lovely and moist. Serve it alongside a baked/glazed ham (made from good Ayrshire bacon which I travel down to Stevenston to get) and then have the traditional Danish rice pudding for dessert.

This year I'm going to buy some legs/shoulders of lambs when I next see an offer for them and put them in the freezer as back up.

DrBlackbird · 24/09/2021 23:13

Do we take cold comfort from how the US trade, the raison d’etre of diverging away from EU standards and regulation, is now dead in the water?
