In Arabia, or Latin America, or Asia, most financial/business decisions are going to be guided/judged by advisors, and Common Law principles of fairness, practicality and proceedability and the integrity that has prevailed in such institutions since WW2 will trump the backhanders and mate's rates sweetheart deals. No deal is 100% pure, only an idiot would expect it to be, but deals, treaties and transactions conducted under common law are mostly cleaner than the rest.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 29/12/2020 21:12

Seems a bit selfish to toast other people misfortune. I'm not affected but remember other people are badly affected.

Musicians, finance, professions, fishing, some farmers, students, God knows who else.....

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 29/12/2020 21:16

👍good news about your DH business XingMing

XingMing · 29/12/2020 21:28

I didn't think that was a toast to other people's misfortune. I'm genuinely sorry for anyone in the creative sector who has lost touch with their audience.

I doubt very much if your are sorry at all, after all there is a whole wide world out there! Leavers on MN and elsewhere have been celebrating, toasting with champagne etc Have a read back through a few Brexit threads?
OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 29/12/2020 21:34

They have lost their market. Other people are losing things. I'm sure there will be gains, but there are losses too.

Tragic clip if you scroll down. www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/careful-what-you-wish-for-brexit-voting-eel-exporters-anguish-goes-viral/29/12/

Nobody can predict whether the gains are bigger than the losses. If not I suspect the future generations will rejoin.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 21:40

Jas, if you are specifically talking to me, and have searched all the threads I have ever posted on, then please refer to 2016 when I said very explicitly that I was in two minds about which way to vote. I wasn't enamoured of the EU's rush to a federal states of Europe, and control from Brussels, but I also disliked the loss of Erasmus scheme, Europol and a host of other brilliant EU initiatives.

Cattenberg · 29/12/2020 21:45

Climate change is going to lead to a mass exodus of people from flooded areas and i do think migration and free movement played a part in why many voted for Brexit even though many people deny the claim.

Rising sea levels are going to have a far greater effect on the UK than on much of continental Europe. Our grandchildren might have been grateful for freedom of movement.

There remains a lot of world open to travel, tourism, work, study and leisure

Ireland. When it comes to work and study, we still have Ireland, thank goodness.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:05

When climate change takes hold, I shall convert to Islam and go to the mountains of Iran (if permittted) and will even wear a burqua. I've flown over it that many times, and thought it must be an awesome place to live. No, I have zero religious beliefs, for the record. But I can conform.

OchonAgusOchonO · 29/12/2020 22:11

Ireland. When it comes to work and study, we still have Ireland, thank goodness.

Ireland is paying for students in NI, regardless of whether they are Irish or British, to avail of erasamus. They are also paying for an EHIC equivalent for residents of NI, again regardless of nationality.

Perhaps you could buy your British eels from this guy. Instead of cheering the collapse of his business. He was suckered into voting for Brexit so he's one of your friends.
The tweet is by Hugh Grant but you're all brave and true. You can dare.

I will be joining you Brandy. Champagne is chilling even now.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:22

Bellini, not sure that there are many eels caught in the UK. The last time anyone told me about eel fishing, it was in southern France and the fisherman was English, selling his catch (after smoking them) to Dutch and Danish people living on their boats just inland of the Mediterranean during winter.

XingMing · 29/12/2020 22:24

Trade is a slippery concept. People buy want they want, not necessarily what bureaucrats think they should want.

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/12/2020 22:35

You know what I like about you bellini? You are more annoying than me. Except I don't go all bells in, criticize, then say why don't you love me and act all hurt and victimized.

I've made some RL Pisco Sours and yours is right down there if you look to your left. After a couple of those you'll find the pleasure in disagreement and the better pleasure in the rare agreements. Ça va

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 22:48

What are you all celebrating?

Is your Pisco Sours served with a cheeky lime and a sprinkle of Angostura bitters? If so, next round is on me guys. Haven’t had one of those in years. 🤤

Gosh! Cheering for deregulation? Poor workers rights, poor health and safety at work. Lower food standards, lower animal standards, less building regulations all if which are being rushed through Parliament under cover of Covid. Welcome to cheap labour more zero contract hours cheap pumped full of chemicals food, money laundering. Tax Haven for the rich. No free movement to Europe or healthcare without comprehensive health insurance, hauliers having to have a passport to get into Kent, no food security no access to databases of terrorists, a border within the UK, tariffs on food sold within the UK. Geez what a great thing to celebrate! Well done! Pat yourselves on the back! Grin

Dg390 · 29/12/2020 23:18

Confused. Are we happy that the eel bloke whose business which employs 10 people is going under? I don’t think he realised his business would
disappear under brexit

Gronky · 29/12/2020 23:34

Is your Pisco Sours served with a cheeky lime and a sprinkle of Angostura bitters?

I had a row vigorous discussion a few years ago about whether they're made with lime or lemon juice. I maintain that made with lemon, it's too smooth. In either case, try making an oleo saccharum rather than adding just juice. This pulls a lot of the citrus oils out and gives a deeper flavour.

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 23:48

Is this celebrating a piss take?

It has nothing at all to do with Brexit surely.

BrandySours · 30/12/2020 00:22

Am remembering now why I ditched MumsNet for the most part of this year

I had a small vestige of hope that the nastiness & bitterness may have eased

Sadly not

People just can't seem to help themselves

Plus ça change 🤷🏻‍♀️
