*Apparently the UK prefer certain cuts (of meat) or certain fish species so we export the cuts/species we don't prefer and import those we do.

Why do we do that? Have we been 'groomed'? What did we do before? We ate it and used it. Given the leaps and bounds in culinary expertise in the UK, thanks to not only our 40 year exposure to continental European cuisine but also the massive increase in worldwide travel, why wouldn't we want to eat these cuts and species that we currently export.*

Because we prefer other ones? I don't recall Vote Leave writing 'let's eat more lamb neck' on the side of a bus.

This. Was. Not. What. Many. Many. People. Thought. They. Were. Voting. For. It was dismissed as Project Fear.

Leavers have been manipulated by a wealthy elite into an unpleasant English nationalism, for the sole benefit of these wealthy people. It's horrific how a small element of the Conservative party has managed to engineer this, to the detriment of normal people.

Jason118 · 30/12/2020 08:22

I popped in looking for the good news rather than platitudes, but as you say, plus ca change.Smile

LurkingLeaver · 30/12/2020 08:25

Brandy, it's been a long time....but was it you who PM'd me the way to block certain users? If certain posters won't let up, I suggest we simply ignore or block. I plan to.

Anyway, as it's early, I'll have a large coffee and a newspaper 📰 xx

yellowspanner · 30/12/2020 09:31

Please an I have a large latte while I curl up by the fire and read about our latest British success...the Oxford vaccine.
Good news about the ERG supporting the trade deal and I see Liz Truss has already got quite a few signed and ready to go.
Two more days. 👏👏👏👏

yellowspanner · 30/12/2020 09:32

Lurking....why block? It is easier to ignore.
Snide, nasty comments by people trying to spoil our celebrations just don't matter.

BrandySours · 30/12/2020 09:40

Lol - I shall do so immediately Lurker 😂

So... today's the day that Parliament vote to approve the deal or not
Very different times to 2018/19 when every vote was a nail biter - thank god for GE2019!

And the Oxford vaccine has been approved for use! 🙌🙌

Happy days 😍Brew

If you can explain what you're celebrating, maybe more people would join in. Please relieve me of my ignorance!

LurkingLeaver · 30/12/2020 09:50

Such good news about the Oxford vaccine! Who knew that such a puny country who could never 'go it alone' would not only be surviving, but positively thriving 😊

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/12/2020 09:50

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst You're not alone. I see nothing to celebrate. Mourn more like. Waiting for a long time for informed enlightenment?

bellinisurge · 30/12/2020 09:56

See the thing is, this lot get all defensive and "hurt" when you ask them questions. That's not going to change. And yes it is Them. Because they love it like that. Makes them feel like the chosen ones. I bet the Eel guy who was originally a poster boy for UKIP felt like that. Until he realised he'd been shafted. And helped in the shafting. The "some businesses fail" tripe doled out below tells you everything about how sympathetic even to each other they are.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/12/2020 09:59

@LurkingLeaver I worked for a time in the same Oxford Uni dept under Prof Bell. You know what made it so vibrant? The ease of exchange of young scientists with the top research groups throughout the world, particularly Europe - groups in Germany, Switzerland, France - and the reciprocal nature and ease of those exchanges. It's not a purely UK win which you laud.

PMcGintysGoat · 30/12/2020 10:12

bellini I think it's understandable why some brexiters are like this. They were well and truly sold a pup and for some people the embarrassment and damage to pride is such that they'd rather brazen it out than admit they fell for the con.

Some are xenophobic or have ulterior motives (disaster capitalism anyone?), but I suspect/hope those are the minority. I suspect most are simply in denial as a self-defence mechanism. They'd be no more likely to publicly admit they'd been conned out of their life savings.

I believe this is what we see when they get overly defensive, and immediately call people snide or nasty - I think they really feel that. They feel that anyone who draws attention to the downside is being nasty - because they already are hyper-sensitive to it. They deflect with lots of chummy chat about celebrating. It's all very sad.

BrandySours · 30/12/2020 10:13

It is great news Lurking 🙌

100 million doses!
This is the one we took the big gamble on & it paid off thank goodness

I have US family and friends. At least one voted Trump in 2016. It's looks more and more like a cult and, there's a point where being understanding of people in a cult is pointless. This kind of cheerleading bears no relation to the reality of the situation even if you voted Leave.
I will not "come together " with these people. I have no room in my head to indulge zealots and extremists.

Jaypreen · 30/12/2020 10:24

The UK roll-out of the vaccine that we were assured by the Guardian and the remain lobby would be months maybe years behind the (obviously) much better, much faster and generally much classier EU programme.

The UK has to date vaccinated a greater proportion of its population than the EU, and the US.

One would think the commission compliant among us would be rather pleased? Instead they seem to still be on about unpleasant English nationalism !

Ho hum..

Dg390 · 30/12/2020 10:29

Lurking Leaver And Brandy sours - celebrate your wonderful brexit. But please don’t use the Oxford vaccine success in your celebrations - the scientists who created it as someone close to it rightly said are not brexiteers, the scientific community was as almost as one vehemently and with detailed reasons anti brexit and brexit context is not what created the vaccine. So find some actual brexit things to celebrate.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/12/2020 10:30

The immunisation program has nothing to do with leaving the EU though, does it! And because the UK Gvmnt couldn't possibly conceive of joining the EU program (which is just a few weeks behind), the UK is paying 40% more per dose!
Also, it's not how many folks have been immunised to date, but the timeframe for population coverage to assist in dampening down disease that is the important guage of success.

Dg390 · 30/12/2020 10:33

Hi Jaypreen. Can you let me know what to say to the touring musicians and artists whose jobs have just been destroyed by brexit (they have lost visa free travel and so their business is no longer viable)? Celebrate seems a little crass ...

Whythesadface · 30/12/2020 10:39

Celebrating the New Year includes everything that New Year brings, freedom from the EU and Freedom from C19., The fact both have an effect on how we recover as an economy means they are linked like two lovers.

Jason118 · 30/12/2020 10:40

But we are not free from either - we are joined in trade with the EU on their terms, and Covid is still at large in the UK, celebrations are premature I think.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/12/2020 10:41

I am always supportive of anyone finding joy in their lives, and celebrating while they can. Knock yourselves out! - and I hope the hangovers aren't too bad.

DoubleTweenQueen · 30/12/2020 10:47

I find it odd that the EU is treated as 'them', when we were one of the most powerful members and architects! So sad.

BrandySours · 30/12/2020 10:57

I'm ignoring most of the posts on this thread, but this one is too ridiculous to scroll past without comment...!
Really taking the dictatorial stance so beloved of many to new extremes 🤦🏻‍♀️

FYI - I will celebrate what I want, when I want, how I want

The vaccine approvals & roll-outs are a HUGE step forward & I'm very happy, relieved & excited about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

So - YAY! to the vaccine news!
