What I did notice in Asda is a distinct lack of salad items. I'm tentatively assuming that it's because of the pre-Christmas chaos and hoping it's not a sign of things to come.

NonyaBizniz · 01/01/2021 17:37

They did warn that salad would b s threatened. Tesco rocket comes from Italy, I think. I’ve tried to grow it at home but failed completely.

Whenwillow · 01/01/2021 17:51

We're doing our weekly shop tomorrow. We've used up all our fresh produce apart from a few leeks and onions. Most of it has gone into soup. (What we haven't eaten in meals over the week)
I'm hoping there are enough mushrooms for us to get an extra pack to dehydrate. I have a jar of dried mushrooms but it was £3! More onions, because they keep really well. If there's plenty of salad we'll get enough for the week, but if not we are going to rely on frozen and tinned veg/fruit, plus multivitamins.
Judging by incoming news, looks like shortages will be most obvious mid Jan, but I think people could start to notice lack of salad and fruit by early next week.
I must remember to put onion granules on the list.

Dontlickthetrolley · 01/01/2021 17:56

Aldi has about 10 pieces of fruit and veg in total yesterday but I put that down to them being shut today, nipped to Morrisons to get what I wanted and they seemed to be fully stocked.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2021 17:58

We have a shit load of homegrown onion in the freezer, so we'll be OK for a bit on that front.

I 'booked' a Sainsbury's slot for Monday just to check stock there and they're showing cucumber in stock, which Asda didn't have. Maybe cucumbers are flown in? I can't recall the country on the ones in the fridge.

It's a bit of a pain in the arse all round. Thank god it's not no deal as well.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/01/2021 14:50

Most things I wanted were available at Morrisons but some things were noticeably missing. Dips, some meat and fish. Other things are no longer available. Mixed boxes of stir-fry veg for example, which we used to have every week.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/01/2021 14:50

It will be interesting to keep a record of what is or is not missing.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/01/2021 15:01

Maybe every time we go / get shopping we should note on here what was missing.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/01/2021 18:46

Yes, though I am on line shopping only at the moment. You can get an idea of what is available.

EveLe · 03/01/2021 22:55

My Tesco order yesterday was also missing stir fry veg mix! Weirdly though, aside from corn on the cob, the rest of my fresh veg arrived. But there was no frozen veg - I’d ordered peas, green beans and sweetcorn to fill the gap left by my Christmas food, and there were no suitable alternatives.

I had 9 subs altogether yesterday, and 4 unavailable, which is the most I’ve had for a long time. Happy enough with the subs as Tesco tend to sub up, so I have a 600g pack of diced beef instead of 400g, and 750g pack of mince instead of 250g!

But no frozen or fresh corn is worrying - very glad I stocked up on tinned now, as it’s the only veg DS eats.

Mamamia456 · 03/01/2021 23:26

Evela - Tesco tinned sweetcorn is on offer at the moment so that may be why you couldn't get any, I think it's 3 for £1.30.

Mamamia456 · 03/01/2021 23:29

Sorry just realised that you said you'd got tinned sweetcorn!

EveLe · 04/01/2021 09:18

Thanks Mamamia456, that offer is on regularly, so don’t think it’s that. Tinned sweetcorn has been in short supply since first lockdown, but as soon as it started to appear in the summer I started ordering 3 per shop as that’s Tesco limit per order (plus DM and DMIL did the same)

My DS is a restricted eater due to ASD, and corn is literally the only veg he eats, so I can’t risk not having any. I’m glad I have a stock though, as I can see shops running low if there’s no fresh or frozen available.

It surprised me that frozen wasn’t available, but I’m hoping it’s just the usual New Year low stock of fresh fruit so people are buying frozen instead.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/01/2021 10:55

Our Sainsbury's order was complete yesterday. Anything missing was subbed for a variant of the same thing, which was fine.

We must be on post-Brexit salad imports now, I'd think? I doubt there's much turnaround between entering the country and getting on the shelves?

BlackeyedSusan · 06/01/2021 20:54

morrisons are now allowing you to order mixed boxes of stir fry veg again. (on 4th when I put in three orders. )

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 06/01/2021 21:12

@EveLe corn is the only veg my DS will eat too! Thankfully I have a stock of frozen (for precisely that reason!) but will keep an eye on stocks.

I've had a couple of emails from local fruit & veg suppliers saying that they're running short of stock Shock I'm glad I signed up to a scheme whilst I could.

Petfood seems in short supply round here for some reason?!

BlackeyedSusan · 06/01/2021 23:35

sweetcorn is one of the few things ds will eat. thankfully not the only thing. he is unusual in that he will eat mixed foods. (soups stews etc)

Ellie56 · 07/01/2021 11:31

Went shopping this morning. (Asda and Morrisons) Fresh produce wasn't stacked to the rafters as it usually is and there were some gaps. Is this the beginning of shortages?

Having said that I got everything I wanted.

Whenwillow · 07/01/2021 11:57

Yesterday I noticed there were a lots of gaps, mainly veg/fruit/fresh meat. Still a lot there and you wouldn't starve, but it was noticeable. I was shopping for a friend and she got a few subs from her list.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/01/2021 13:45

But did you sub sensibly, or was it an online shopping-style, nonsense, sub, @Whenwillow?! Grin

Whenwillow · 07/01/2021 14:22

Caviar instead of tuna, that sort of thing fluffy? 😂
I've never had an online food delivery - hit me with your finest subs, tetris players!

NoWordForFluffy · 07/01/2021 14:48

I don't think I've ever had anything insane, thankfully. There are semi-regular threads on MN about mad subs though!

NoWordForFluffy · 07/01/2021 14:50

Here's one, there are loads out there though: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3204262-To-ask-for-your-weird-and-wonderful-online-shopping-substitutions

Whenwillow · 07/01/2021 15:48

Thank you! That's going to be a good giggle. I have got as far as plasters instead of sanitary towels 🙈

NoWordForFluffy · 07/01/2021 16:17

It'll give you ideas for next time you're shopping for your friend! 😂🤣
