Thanks. That makes sense. I’ve done an “audit” of our cupboards and I do think we are well stocked. We have been adding a few extras to the weekly shop for a while because of pandemic and brexit concerns. But we don’t have packed cupboards and I’m not sure whether we need more things or whether it will be okay as it is.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 13/12/2020 20:43

For me it's not just about having stocks of food (though it's partially that). But, if I have plenty of stock in, then I don't have to buy many of my usual things. That leaves money in the budget to absorb price rises on other items as I won't have to buy tuna, kidney beans, oils, chopped tomatoes, flour, baked beans etc.

About 4/5 of our food is fresh, so we'll have to adapt. But if we can give the kids as normal a diet as possible, then I'll be happier.

Been lurking for a while. My original Brexit stash was depleted in covid times so have spent the summer stocking up with a few bits each week. Our outhouse (which is now inside) store cupboard is full, two freezers are groaning. Went and did the weekly shop today, and was very surprised at how quiet it was. Family and friends think I have lost the plot and are not expecting any issues. Confused. Not sure if I am mad or they are Smile, hopefully it won’t be needed and my shopping bills will be smaller in the New Year. I live in an areas with one of the highest Brexit votes, maybe that is why I am alone in my worry. Have 4 young kids, and with covid, rural area and one isolation under our belt I keep stressing have we enough?

High levels tetris here.
I feel so British-ly embarrassed about the time the EU are spending on Johnson. They have the patience of a saint.

SixesAndEights · 14/12/2020 11:09

I've now enough food to last about 15 weeks without buying anything but fresh fruit and veg. And I've got some frozen veg and tinned fruit to eke out. I've also got carrots, parsnip and beetroot in the garden.

EveLe · 14/12/2020 13:44

Had a panic on Saturday about the possibility of no deal, and did an Iceland order, my freezer is now so full, that I had to remove all the greggs sausage rolls and steak bakes from the boxes to fit them in!

On the plus side, I ordered 3 of each type of the part baked bread, in case any of them were out of stock and they all arrived - so I now have 9 packs of part baked bread with a use by date of 28/2.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 15:01

My DD has put her extra large chicken in our freezer, used to have a bit of room left but now it's all squashed in.

Whenwillow · 14/12/2020 15:15

It's my next fun thing to do now Marshmallow, see if I can rearrange my freezer in such a way that I could fit a whole chicken in.
I'm wondering if it's possible to remove meat from packaging if it's already frozen.
Brute force and a crowbar, possibly might do it. The theory was, I would use up meat that's then freeze more, sans packaging, but I'm cutting it fine now.
Today I bought a huge sack of potatoes from the butcher, plus 2lb stewing steak which I should be able to mould into shape for freezing.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 15:31

OMG it is super squashed in here, can't wait till she takes it out! 'm thinking you could especially if you were going to use it in the next few days. Also thinking of buying some cool bag/boxes but they seem to have gone up massively. Someone seems to be profiteering I fear. Sad You sound like me Whenwillow trying to think of ways of getting more stuff in however I can! I would stick that sack in a dark cupboard/garage/shed to prolong it's life. Grin

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 15:39

I think we have 4-5 chickens in our 2nd freezer. DH is in charge of that dept (including stock rotation).

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 15:56

OMG Fluffy your DH must be super good at this tetris lark. Grin

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 17:10

We're as good as each other, but he does the freezer as I have Raynauds so can't! Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 19:53

Oh really that must be hard Fluffy my DH helps with the hoovering as my shoulders are not the best, it's good to have a division of labour. Grin

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2020 19:57

well I just had my final delivery before Christmas and I bloody well forgot to order loi roll. Have only three. I can’t believe after three stages of brexit prepping and two lockdown preps that I have let myself down so badly. Sick and tired of everything food and grocery related at the moment.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 20:00

This is what Sainsbury's fridge section did to me the other week! I can't hang washing out from about October onwards either (I still do, but accept the inevitable ouchiness). It gets worse as I get older.

We divide labour, but I bollock DH if he claims to help me. We're both adults living in the same house, so the housework is a joint responsibility.

@HeronLanyon, get onto Groupon etc and get a bulk order in!

OP posts:
MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 20:04

Lots of times I have ordered loo roll online and they have said that it was oos, I usually go to the shop when I need some. It is tiring Heron I too am sick and tired of everything to do with Brexit & Covid.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 20:09

Oh no that's terrible Fluffy, totally agree with joint responsibility I'm a bit of a bollocker too Grin Have never done a Groupon order.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 20:25

We've had our Brexit bog roll a fair while now! It's loads dearer now too.

I've got approx. 120 loo rolls in tbe loft.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 20:33

Good price, how long did it last you, think it would last us about 9 weeks.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 14/12/2020 20:50

It's on top of the cupboard, awaiting Brexit! I think it would last 4-ish months, maybe.

OP posts:
MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 20:56

OMG really, not a chance in our house! Grin

FinallyHere · 14/12/2020 21:19

Upright freezer suitable for garage delivered today. An initial order to stock it up scheduled Friday. Higher than usual levels of stock in the cupboards slowing but up since the summer.

Lots of (unusual) favourite toothpaste.

And seeds for sprouts.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/12/2020 01:31

Oh God.

I have finally achieved small corner shop levels of stock. I may have accidentally achieved major supermarket levels of a couple of items. Going to risk venturing out again tomorrow. More for the bits and bobs than food.
