Thanks as always RTB. This thread is an island of sanity in a chaotic world.

Thanks Red.
So during the election campaign 10 months ago, when they were pushing the great oven-ready deal, did they know they’d have to go against it in the end?
Or: he just never read and understood it?
Dishonest, or incompetent? Either way...
PawFives · 12/09/2020 18:27
Wow previous thread went quickly! Thanks RTB for the new thread. Can’t quite believe where we are now as a country, what will it take for people to wake up!!
Towards the end of the last thread someone mentioned Peron style politics and it reminded me of discussion a while ago about how Argentina was something like the world’s 5th biggest economy and declined rapidly due to a series of bad decisions. Seems familiar doesn’t it.

Buenos Aires even had the only overseas branch of Harrods in the early 20th century. I found it fascinating when I visited. And now I find it somewhat terrifying.

Johnson trying to get the people to accept restrictions at home while drumming up support for his maverick manoeuvres in Brussels... tricky

Thanks also for the link provided to the interactive map of local stats.
The tiny village (pop 1800) where mother's care home is located had 20 deaths March to June.
They remained open through Mother's Day when other homes were voluntarily banning visits before national lockdown, and I knew at the time that was a very bad decision. Not, however, that bad.
I do understand that the whole episode was a shambles from a gov point of view but management has to take some responsibility.
ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/09/2020 18:48
PMK, with special thanks to all the regulars.
I second Words comment about this being an island of sanity.

Brexit trade trouble is starting. Or heating up, i suppose.

“The EU has cast doubt on whether it would grant Britain a "third-country listing" for exports of products of animal origin, citing "uncertainties" over its biosecurity controls.
Such exports are worth £5bn to the UK.”

Thanks, red 💐
On my Rhine walk just now, I heard a great clattering from behind me and realised this was hooves
- from 2 horses leaving the little Rhine ferry (comes from an island with vineyards)
pulling a carved wooden wagon into our village

Insight into BJ tactics ?
This is from 2018, when he was Foreign Sec to May's PM - he obviously thinks there is mileage in convincing the EU he's nuts:
https://www.politico.eu/article/brexit-boris-johnson-donald-trump-all-sorts-of-chaos-says/
U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson praised Donald Trump and said there would be "all sorts of chaos" if the U.S. president was in charge of Brexit.
Johnson was speaking on Wednesday at a closed-door gathering at the Institute of Directors in London,
an audio recording of which was obtained by BuzzFeed News and published Thursday.
Speaking to Tory activists at the event, Johnson said:
“I am increasingly admiring of Donald Trump. I have become more and more convinced that there is method in his madness.”
“Imagine Trump doing Brexit,” Johnson added. “He’d go in bloody hard … There’d be all sorts of breakdowns, all sorts of chaos. Everyone would think he’d gone mad. But actually you might get somewhere.
It’s a very, very good thought.”
< unfortunately, that is oinly effective, if ever, when the mad leader ha the might of a superpower.
When done by the leader of a medium-sized power in a deep hole, it invites only derision, not fear >

In my 2 post-lockdown haircuts (late May & July) I have had a dramatic undercut
Unusual in a mature woman with completely grey hair
but I'm retired and give even fewer fucks than before.

PMK with the cat on my lap.
The parallels with Argentina, slipping from in the top 7 of the G7 in the early 20th century to the also-ran economies due to a series of unfortunate political decisions are uncomfortable and becoming ever more likely.
I can just hope that Scotland escapes it sooner rather than later and thus will demonstrate that there is an alternative and better way
yoikes · 12/09/2020 19:09
I should point out the grey is completely natural ;)
pointythings · 12/09/2020 19:11
Ok, here's proof!
