How could actively harming your country for personal gain be anything but treason?
THIS

DGRossetti · 13/09/2020 16:53

@Peregrina

I sincerely hope that when sanity eventually returns that the likes of Johnson, Gove, Rees-Mogg, Braverman are tried and imprisoned.
My DF remembers the partisans returning to his village and describing how Mussolini and Petacci were strung up and the arguments about whether to execute him or not. (There was no question that he was for the chop - apparently it was whether to shoot him or leave him to the mob ...).
JamieLeeCurtains · 13/09/2020 16:54

This one (re treason):

"adhering to the sovereign's enemies, giving them aid and comfort, in the realm or elsewhere"

JamieLeeCurtains · 13/09/2020 16:59

I was in Bucharest shortly after Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu went to meet their maker, and the Romanians I knew had been contemptuous of them for a very long time, and when it snapped it snapped so bloody quickly.

Things turn on a sixpence.

In the same way it's weird to know that London Underground ran Met Lin specials to the last public execution in England (1868), there's a slightly weird "fascism meets MTV" vibe around the fact they had to restage the executions for better video.

I wonder how many solicitors are dusting off their law books and making damn sure they remember "superior orders" as defined at Nuremberg ?

This a thousand times, such despicable & truly heinous behaviour.
DGRossetti · 13/09/2020 17:37

Maybe now, some people will have a better understanding of how it happened to Germany ...

DrBlackbird · 13/09/2020 17:40

A late PMK... events happen so fast. Too much to hope for the 'events' will be the undoing of this government?

Why would they. If we take that MN is fairly representative cross section of wider society then who is talking about it ? No one ? Who is even aware if it ? No one.

Here's the current hot topics here ...

The "controversy" over the Diversity performance seemed to upset more people.

I guess there's a ration of 1:6 involved somewhere - you need 6 to carry your coffin.

Yes, I was looking at the topics that are 'trending' and thought the same DGR... 😑

Interesting bio on Tony Abbott on R4 now. Not a very nice sounding individual...

All over people changing their votes
Along with their overcoats
If Adolf Hitler flew in today
They'd send a limousine anyway

Darker · 13/09/2020 18:05

I’ve just picked up a wodge of Friday’s evening freebie from the station to line the bottom of my chicken coop. Feels apt.

Dgds uni which she goes to in a week have already said majority will be online tutoring and very small seminars. Not allowed on campus only if you have to be there or using library but most of stuff needed will be online anyway.

ListeningQuietly · 13/09/2020 18:28

Swedish
Petronella got pregnant by Johnson .... will always "colour" her comments

Sostenuento
That sounds rough.
DS is off to a campus Uni who seem to have designated themselves one great big bubble
I'm delighted for him

SwedishEdith · 13/09/2020 18:36

I am sure I heard a senior Government member say that Tony Abbot wasn't on the payroll, so is he doing the job for free then, out of the goodness of his heart ?

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2020 18:52

He's doing it without pay, but likely to get a peerage, since Frost did -prestige and a lifelong nice earner

Also, he had to raise his profile so he can raise his speaking fees - he was very much Yesterday's Man before this
BJ has reanimated an Australian political corpse, who was a nasty but useless shit in his first incarnation

DGRossetti · 13/09/2020 18:56

Is he an Australian citizen ? Aren't they (like Canadians) barred from accepting honours.

Well, used to be, leastways.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 13/09/2020 19:06

Abbott was born in UK, of UK parents who emigrated to Australia when he was a boy.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2020 19:16

"Sticking to facts is also essential" = Barnier's polite way to say that UK govt is lying. Repeatedly.

Michel Barnier@MichelBarnier

Protocol on IE/NI is not a threat to the integrity of the UK.
We agreed this delicate compromise with @BorisJohnson‬ & his gov in order to protect peace & stability on island of Ireland.

We could not have been clearer about the consequences of ‪#Brexit‬ [1/2]

Sticking to facts is also essential.

A case in point:

🇪🇺 is not refusing to list 🇬🇧 as a third country for food imports (SPS).

To be listed, we need to know in full what a country’s rules are, incl. for imports.

The same objective process applies to all listed countries [2/2]

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2020 19:18

Of course, problem is that the UK govt probably have no idea what rules they will set
Hence can't inform the EU of them
Hence can't get listed as an accepted 3rd country in the EU databases for imports

JamieLeeCurtains · 13/09/2020 19:51

Petronella got pregnant by Johnson ....

Wiki reports

Between 2000 and 2004, Wyatt had an affair with the then editor of The Spectator and Conservative MP Boris Johnson.[8] Johnson had promised to leave his wife, and the affair had resulted in a miscarriage and a terminated pregnancy.[9] When her mother found out about the affair, she discussed it with the press.[4][8] He was fired from his shadow cabinet post by Michael Howard for lying about the affair, as he had initially categorically denied it.[8][10]

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2020 20:06

Well, she knows what his promises are worth
and the shit that happens when you believe him
