@Pepperwort

Brexit trade trouble is starting. Or heating up, i suppose. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54117766 “The EU has cast doubt on whether it would grant Britain a "third-country listing" for exports of products of animal origin, citing "uncertainties" over its biosecurity controls. Such exports are worth £5bn to the UK.”
"Right to export" Hmm

Rather ignores the fact there is a reciprocal "Right to control imports" that sovereign nations have. You'd think the UK would know that, being a bit of an expert of sovereignty ...

Great hair! I can only share beautiful roses from a friend yesterday which I'm relishing.

Returning to COVID and death distributions...

Here is an interactive ONS map of age distribution,
where you can check for each area the rough number of aged under 16, 16-64, 65+
(they use it to project into the future, but we should just take 2018)

See section 6 of:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationestimates/articles/overviewoftheukpopulation/august2019#the-uks-population-is-ageing

because if you select your area or LA, then knowing if there are a high or low number of 65+ is likely to be a more important indicator of deaths than deprivation or ethnic makeup

I gather the issue with UK food exports is that the govt were supposed to supply some information to the EU to enable the UK to be put on the database of allowed 3rd countries for this

Apparently the Uk cba to collect / provide this data and / or it needed some standards regs to be guaranteed in the UK, so ....
the UK is not in any database

Now of course, even if the Uk now provides what is needed, any EU members could veto allowing this instead of it passing "on the nod"

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 12/09/2020 20:52

Thanks red

Law, what is it good for? Is now going through my head Grin

DGRossetti · 12/09/2020 21:10

I gather the issue with UK food exports is that the govt were supposed to supply some information to the EU to enable the UK to be put on the database of allowed 3rd countries for this

Because that is exactly the "red tape" that will make UK exports less profitable.

QueenOfThorns · 12/09/2020 21:37

Lovely hair, guys! I let DD put pink and blue stripes in my hair this week, but it was only hair chalk so it washed out Grin

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2020 22:05

I really bloody wish my new thread starters would stop being so damn right...

... Here we are. Human Rights. Potted.

Been saying this since 2016.

But how on earth would Scotland break away if the UK government doesn't agree to an independence referendum? How can 2 parts of a country split if there is no cooperation?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/09/2020 22:36

Do we have a risk of the transition period coming to an abrupt end if we break international law?

Sostenueto · 12/09/2020 22:48

PMK thanks red. Picture of mutt hiding from all the shit in the UK.

Ellie56 · 12/09/2020 22:48

But how on earth would Scotland break away if the UK government doesn't agree to an independence referendum?

Well Scotland could always amend the Act of Union in a limited and specific way.

Sostenueto · 12/09/2020 22:49

ohyoubadkitten was just going to ask that!

tantamountto · 12/09/2020 23:13

Yes, Scotland could hold a referendum and then declare itself Independent. But what then? Splitting Scotland from the rest of the UK would be far harder than Brexit. And without cooperation?

HateIsNotGood · 12/09/2020 23:14

LQ those mushrooms are pretty awesome - is it the picture or are they in a square shape? If they are a bit 'squarey' (and my eyes are operating correctly) did they naturally grow that way or did they get some persuasion?

HateIsNotGood · 12/09/2020 23:31

I think maybe we should have an English Assembly/Parliament now. I've never been for the idea before due to previous overload caused by the Regional Assembly Quango/fiascos that have gone before.

But seems to me, as every UK Nation has it's own separate Democratic Representation - except for England - it can only be fair that the English have equal Representation too.

Maybe with its Assembly in Birmingham, Manchester?
Not sure where the UK Parliament sould Assemble - maybe it should do a rotating shift amongst it's Nation States, however many
belong?

And turn over the ancient buildings that are Westminster to a Museum.

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2020 23:52

Oh and dont forget the HRA and the ECHR underpin the NI peace agreement and the 3 devolved assemblies.

Taking back control folks.

prettybird · 13/09/2020 00:08

Although I personally think that the opportunity for a federal approach for the UK has now gone, if the peoples of the constituent nations wanted it, it would have to be along the lines of the USA (one of the more reasonable parts of their governance), with equal representation per country, so that the vastly larger population of England doesn't just continue to override the wishes of the other countries (viz the current "Internal Market" bill/proposals the one that breaks international law Hmm)

Somehow I don't see that happening Confused

Or we could consider the sort of union where the constituent nations all retain their sovereignty, yet have the right of veto over any trade deals and international treaties. Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2020 00:36

red I can't read that Telegraph story
Is it claiming - and the Telegraph often engages in wishful thinking - that BJ intends to opt out of bits of the ECHR, or just some rights he thinks were added in the HRA ?
