Whenever this is asked mid-thread, it's never answered. There's plenty of information out there about how the UK had benefited from membership, but I really struggle to find info on how it's had a negative impact.
So in Jan 2021, once the transition period is over and we actually start to see the impact of the decision, what will improve? How will yours, and mine, and the general population's lives improve?

Maybe Nissan will try and grab the market that Honda were going to fill?

MysteryTripAgain · 03/02/2020 14:21

Does the UK as a single country have the same level of negotiating clout as a trading bloc made up of 27 countries like the EU

Not all 27 are same clout as you call it. Malta has a population of about 400,000 for example. The net takers (18 out of 27) will say nothing as only interested in what they get for free.

EU is only one of Boris's targets. I think US is top of his list.

Peregrina · 03/02/2020 17:11

Yes, we are going to see things being made in UK.

I think you will need to persuade yourself that "Made in China" equates to the UK, or are going to be a little disappointed.

Considering the Tory Party did not get their Brexit mementos made in the UK
(teatowels from Northern Ireland, Crockery from the potteries, steel from Sheffield)
the outlook for UK manufacturing is not bright

"Buy the OFFICIAL Got Brexit Done tea towel to commemorate our departure from the European Union on the 31st January 2020."

"Show your pride in Britain and celebrate Brexit in your kitchen with this limited edition item. Buy one today, for yourself or as a gift."

PROUDLY made in the UK.

Some expert was on radio today saying that negotiations with EU will be hugely easier (for UK) if Eu stay unified. If EU countries fragment in what they want, then EU would be incapable of making a deal of any sort with UK for many yrs to come.

ListeningQuietly · 03/02/2020 18:24

Clav
Most of it says printed in the UK
which is not the same thing ...

Clavinova · 03/02/2020 18:27

Yes, I know - but you mentioned tea towels first and I thought the description was amusing to read.

MysteryTripAgain · 03/02/2020 18:45

Correct. Spain wanting Gibraltar may topple the exercise. Some will be interested in fishing and others not.

Pride will play a big part. France and Germany will be desperate to show to the other EU members that those who dare leave the club will be severely punished.

Ireland will be desperate to say. We got the better of you Na Na Na Na Na as UK is small now.

Plus there’s the general rule of thumb that the larger the committee the less likelihood of a consensus anyway or at best it will take a long time.

Oh indeed, the "proudly" bit smacks of desperation.
That and the fact that the first delivery date is the 10th

  • several days after the important date !!!
frumpety · 03/02/2020 19:09

I for one am not excited about the idea that getting a deal with the EU will take years, for whatever reason, unless of course it means we stay in a transition period for that Smile

Mystery are you being deliberately obtuse ? It's fine if you are, I live with someone who could do it as an Olympic sport, with sarcasm as their second discipline, include belligerence and he could make it a triathlon Grin

Someone somewhere will make a few bob from the pound falling.

MysteryTripAgain · 03/02/2020 19:18

unless of course it means we stay in a transition period for that

Longer transition period = Prolonged uncertainty

Uncertainty = risk

Risk = reduced investment

Reduced investment = reduced growth

Reduced growth = fewer jobs

Fewer job = reduced tax revenue

Reduced tax revenue = reduced gov spending

Reduced gov spending = Austerity

malylis · 03/02/2020 19:20

All of those things apply to leaving the EU

MysteryTripAgain · 03/02/2020 19:23

All of those things apply to leaving the EU

Austerity started long before referendum was even suggested.

malylis · 03/02/2020 19:27

Yet it would be as a result of less economic activity.

Which is caused by leaving the EU.

MysteryTripAgain · 03/02/2020 19:32

@maylis

So if

Prolonged transition (not leaving EU) = Austerity

And

Leaving EU = Austerity

That means UK will always be in Austerity as you either leave or don’t leave the EU.

So how will will Brexit produce an increasee in UK manufacturing?

PhoneLock · 03/02/2020 20:29

So how will will Brexit produce an increasee in UK manufacturing?

This would be a start. If it's true.

So how will will Brexit produce an increasee in UK manufacturing?

Sell to non EU countries the specialist manufactured goods UK has developed as it has moved away from high volume manufacturing.
