A new thread as the other one is getting full. I'm enjoying the post election discussion. Every view is listened to and welcomed.

Brexit is happening, but what kind of Brexit will it be?

New leaderships for both Labour and the LibDems.

Most importantly, will Britain be Great in 2024?

Can't be doing with Jess Philips with her theatrics, aggression and ego, much prefer the calmness of Kier Starmer and Lisa Nandy.
Yes that is a bit of a problem.
By the way Keir Starmer was named after Keir Hardie. His name is not Kier

derxa · 16/12/2019 13:46

Although a Glaswegian acquaintance claimed to be able to tell Glasgow "Proddies" from "Papes" as she put it I can as well.
Ask a Glaswegian to say 'fair hair'.

Tanith · 16/12/2019 13:46

I used to be asked to repeat what I'd said all the time when I visited friends in Lincolnshire - not because they didn't understand my accent, but because they loved it!

I sound like the Wurzels... Grin

Random18 · 16/12/2019 13:47

BCF I think there is some truth to that.

Random18 · 16/12/2019 13:48

Not for all I should say, but definitely for some.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 13:48

I like Philips a lot, but imo her temperament could make her vulnerable to the kind of sustained, vicious Tory media campaign that any Labour leader will have to overcome for the next 5 years

The Tories would struggle to demonise the very calm & capable Starmer - he could grey rock for England - so would have to pick on those around him
e.g. if Abbott, McDonnell aren't put out to grass

Hannah Al-Othman reporting in Buzzfeed that Labour staff are planning to strike if Murphy and Milne are still in place in January.

Can't see them going through with it myself - but what do I know?

Random18 · 16/12/2019 13:52

I think she's good. Very good.

But I don't think she should be the next leader.

Possibly a leader for the future but not now.

Purely because she is such a marmite figure.

The far left hate her.
We do need a candidate who can cross the divide and bring all sides together.

Who that is - I have no clue

Tanith · 16/12/2019 13:53

I once had a call centre phone call with a lady with a Glaswegian accent that I tried so hard to understand and couldn't. I remember apologising again and again, near to tears.
She was very nice and got another lady with a Huddersfield accent to come and speak to the dim Sassanach with the dodgy ears. I was mortified, though Blush

DGRossetti · 16/12/2019 13:53

Although a Glaswegian acquaintance claimed to be able to tell Glasgow "Proddies" from "Papes" as she put it, but when she reproduced the accents they sounded the same to my admittedly very poor hearing.

I lived with a guy from Northern Ireland for two years. He could tell the difference in peoples upbringings (which almost invariably included religion) from accent. It was just a "thing" over there. But it did lead to no-go zones, apparently.

Random18 · 16/12/2019 13:59

Ask a Glaswegian to say 'fair hair'.

Fair hair. Is there different ways of saying it?

derxa · 16/12/2019 13:59

I once had a call centre phone call with a lady with a Glaswegian accent that I tried so hard to understand and couldn't. I remember apologising again and again, near to tears. There are many different Glasgow accents including Glaswasian. My dentist speaks with a Glaswasian accent. It's very calming.

Tanith · 16/12/2019 14:01

They ought to put in an interim Leader before the elections as a trial run so they can see how their preferred candidate(s) shape up.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 14:03

"The far left hate her."

The "'knife you in the front" threat to Corbyn if he damaged Labour ?
Well, he has so she will

CendrillonSings · 16/12/2019 14:04

You can only enact policy if you win.

Fuck me, I'll repeat not on the suffering of others even if I was guranteed a win, if it came off the backs of others the price is too high for me, clearly not for the Tories though

Then the logical consequence of your moral purity is eternal Conservative Government. I suppose I should be grateful.

Apart from that, it beggars belief that you think no one would suffer under the Labour manifesto, which promised economic dislocation and confiscation on a scale not seen in decades. I can assure you that an awful lot of people would have suffered from it!

Random18 · 16/12/2019 14:05

I remember having jewellery stolen in US.

Try telling an American that it was Mother of Pearl in a Glaswegian accent

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 14:05

Labour need an interim leader because Corbyn needs to go asap,
but there also needs to be time for reflection on the leader who can best rebuild for the next 5+ years

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 14:09

Oh, I hadn't heard this timing:

inews.co.uk/news/politics/rebecca-long-bailey-next-labour-leader-election-jeremy-corbyn-1342011

Corbyn has asked for his successor to be elected by the end of March.

It is expected that the contest will get underway on 7 January.

derxa · 16/12/2019 14:11

Corbyn is going to be ridiculed at PMQs. Why anyone would want to go through that I don't know.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 14:13

The new leader should be the best person, not necessarily a woman as some Labour figures are demanding

imo, Thornberry, Long-Bailey or Butler would be dreadful
If a woman, then Phillips, maybe Nandy

BigChocFrenzy · 16/12/2019 14:14

Corbyn's thick skin is both a weakness and a strength

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 14:14

Rather agree with you, BigChoc.

thecatfromjapan · 16/12/2019 14:15

(The agree was with previous post. But, yes, thick skins in politics are a virtue and a vice.)

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 14:16

I don’t know why Corbyn would want to go through PMQ either. I know he’s thick skinned but it will be dire.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 14:17

I don’t know it has to be a woman. It’s an extra bit of up hill on an already up hill battle.
