Westministenders: Promises, promises

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2019 17:46

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Another day another
@Conservatives
found to have a history of bigotry - this time Holocaust denial. Homophobic & Islamophobic comments.
It’s a shame this has to be done this way - the Party could have been proactively anti racist rather than being consistently shamed into action

Tomorrow’s front page exclusive: Scottish Tories forced to axe candidate after we uncover sick internet history of Holocaust denial, homophobia and Islamophobia. Shocking details only in tomorrow’s paper – must read

It’s not just Boris Johnson’s lying. It’s that the media let him get away with it

The Tory candidate was suspended over comments relating to the holocaust. The Labour councillor quit because he was unhappy with the outcome of a local selection.

The idea there is any equivalence is absurd.

Tory candidate suspended in Aberdeen North, Labour chair quits in Leicester East bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50467321

Peregrina · 19/11/2019 09:30

Labour tonight should focus on Johnson's links to the NHS sell off. That is most definitely the Tories Achilles heel. Corbyn needs to say, it's not the empty promises you make now, it's what you have already done, which matters.

The one thing we do know is that a significant proportion of Leavers voted to support the NHS. Easily enough to have swung the vote.

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 09:39

The focus tonight needs to be on broken promises. The tax cuts Johnson promised in his leadership campaign have already gone - no reduction in corporation tax, no raised threshold to £80k for higher rate tax, no reduction in stamp duty. If I were Corbyn I’d highlight that Johnson will say anything to garner votes and then forget all about it.

If Johnson is on the same form as he was yesterday at the CBI, Corbyn will wipe the floor with him.

prettybird · 19/11/2019 09:47

The Tory candidate being suspended in Aberdeen North and no longer getting any support (but of course will still be on the ballot paper) should help the incumbent, Kirsty Blackman Smile

I may have a wee discussion with ds to get him to sort out a postal vote for down here as our local SNP MP has a smaller majority than Kirsty Wink ....at the very least, he should keep his options open Grin

Peregrina · 19/11/2019 09:53

Corbyn has now had a few years in the job, and has begun to learn how to do it properly. Johnson still thinks it's an Eton debate and that he can bluster.

Violetparis · 19/11/2019 10:48

I think Corbyn going on big companies like Amazon not paying enough tax and the fox hunting ban would play well.

3dogs2cats · 19/11/2019 10:53

I worry because BJ is a bully, he’s honed his bullying skills for years. It turns me right off but these days seems to gain approval. Who can forget Trump stalking Hillary Clinton.

MockersthefeMANist · 19/11/2019 11:00

BJ is a bully

It's funny isn't it, that socialism gives eloquence and dignity to the masses in a way that capitalism only seeks to remove ?

Westministenders: Promises, promises
Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 11:16

Blimey, Danny Dyer’s gone up many notches in my estimation. I had him down for true blue.

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 11:18

DH has also been to a high leave area and was talking to someone who said because they speak in another language when drunk (Welsh - it's a border constituency) they no longer go to their local because of the English nationalists. That's new.

There was research published a few weeks ago that found the Welsh referendum vote had been swung by English blow ins in the the borders voting Leave. Welsh speaking areas has tended to vote Remain.

Anecdotally, relatives that live in a westerly Welsh speaking area tell me that there will be a lot of tactical voting - swinging behind the Plaid candidates.

ContinuityError · 19/11/2019 11:23

The Tory candidate being suspended in Aberdeen North

Interesting to note that Ryan Houghton was the Chief of Staff to former Aberdeen South MP Ross Thomson, who is standing down after assault allegations.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 11:31

Mark Jameson@MarkJamesonArt

Replying to @ScotNational

There have two new antisemitic Tory candidates exposed today.

One of them remains in the party along with many, many other antisemites.

Aberdeen North Tory candidate Ryan Houghton suspended over Holocaust comments

Here's the other one.
Still in the party

Mr Bashir, a former Ukip MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, made the comments during a European Parliament debate on Gaza in 2014.
< Saying that in the EP - an elected representative - is far more embarassing than the young Aberdeen North guy, imo>

It's funny isn't it, that socialism gives eloquence and dignity to the masses in a way that capitalism only seeks to remove ? One of the more patronising things I've read on here re Danny Dyer.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 11:39

Police investigations still ongoing - what happens if they want to question people during a GE campaign ?
The theory of "without fear or favour" is one thing, but in practice they may be as reluctant as the BBC to tackle the govt

Tories accused of being 'economical with the truth' after they deny offering jobs to Brexit Party chiefs

https://www.politicshome.com/news/uk/political-parties/conservative-party/news/108021/tories-accused-being-economical-truth-after

Asked if Conservative denials of job offers were therefore a lie, Mr Habib said:

"Well I'm saying they're being economical with the truth for sure, absolutely.
It has been going on, without a shadow of a doubt."

"Patronising ?"

imo, no
Controversial / political, yes

OP posts:
DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 11:50

Funny how Tory candidates for Wales would enforce language checks on immigrants they themselves would fail.

Or is that a bit patronising ? I get confused these days Sad.

DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 11:52

Part of the BBCs problem is that is seems to believe it's somehow equivalent to a privately owned broadcaster.

A Tory majority would see a bonfire of TLA bodies. The NHS and BBC being the first two in the firing line.

derxa · 19/11/2019 11:58

I mean patronising specifically about Danny Dyer.
www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/nov/25/danny-dyer-who-do-you-think-you-are
I remember the hoo ha on MN when WDYTYA revealed that DD was directly descended from Thomas Cromwell. Left wing MN revealed its inherent snobbery.
Danny Dyer has a media personna which involves him using a particular accent and dialect. Does that mean he is one of the 'masses'? Does it mean that he is not intelligent?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 12:09

He said "socialism gives eloquence and dignity to the masses"
Nothing about intelligence or accent or talent

With the tiny population a few centuries ago, quite a few of us are probably descended from famous people
Isn't Cameron descended from Royalty ?
that neither lowers nor raises my opinion of such people, because it is irrelevant to their own virtues or faults.

OP posts:
derxa · 19/11/2019 12:15

We know the nuanced meaning of the word 'masses'
With the tiny population a few centuries ago, quite a few of us are probably descended from famous people You've just proved my point. Bloody hell he is the spitting image of Thomas Cromwell.
