Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

It does feel like late stage capitalism.

Anyone ever heard of Henry Kaiser ?

Only just finished watched a saved bit of TV documentaries. Education is a wonderful thing.

runningintothesunset · 17/11/2019 18:58

Blue Gingerale - what’s your insider vibe? Is he going to cling on?

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2019 19:12

Has the Times report of the blind African guy being dragged out of the Oxford Union been covered here? (I’ve been out all day).

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 17/11/2019 19:17

Thanks bigchoc

Been out all day with my 7yo DS. He decided to give me his political opinions:

  • Boris Johnson is an idiot. Donald trump is definitely an idiot. And Jeremy Corbyn is sometimes an idiot.
  • wait, how do you know who Jeremy Corbyn is?
  • urgh, I watch the news mum
  • ok. What do you think of Jo Swinson then?
  • She's ok
  • why's that?
  • well she's a woman, so that's better

If nothing else, I've got some smash the patriarchy into him Grin

Giving Jo a clear run because she does not have a block and tackle unlike "woman on the year" Caitlin Jenner is a tad simplistic
but the rest of the analysis is sound

www.theguardian.com/society/2019/nov/17/nhs-bosses-accused-of-gagging-staff-during-election-campaign

NHS staff claim they are being prevented from speaking out during the election campaign because their bosses are applying rules about political neutrality too zealously.

Health workers have been told not to get involved in any political debates on social media during the campaign.

NHS organisations have also banned staff from appearing in uniform or featuring any of their equipment, such as an ambulance, in their online posts or profiles.

Doctors, nurses and paramedics have told the Guardian that the instructions from their employers are oppressive and an attempt to stop them highlighting the fragile state of the NHS in the run-up to the 12 December poll.

There are lots of NHS organisations that have got really carried away with their interpretation of the purdah rules. Given that our Labour candidate was an NHS consultant in 2017, they’re being ridiculous. I worked in public sector comms for three decades and staff were never constrained like this. Fortunately, those with commonsense are ignoring it and saying their piece. What are they going to do? Fire them when there aren’t enough of them now?

Racism rarely ‘adds up’.

It’s not clear why he wasn’t allowed entry to the debate given he had a union card.

A friend of mine, a QC, who’s principal at another college, is representing his appeal, she wouldn’t do so if she didn’t think he had a case.

chomalungma · 17/11/2019 19:55

Based on conversations with 2 people - a Labour Leaver and a Lib Dem Remainer, it's been very depressing.

The Labour Leaver wants Brexit to happen, but won't vote Labour or Conservative. They are thinking about not voting

The Lib Dem remainer is concerned about what happens to democracy if the Lib Dem's get in and revoke Brexit. They were thinking of voting Conservative 'to get Brexit done'. They weren't sure about Labour's policy.

I don't know how reflective these views are of other people - but it was interesting to hear views outside of my bubble.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2019 19:56

Things look different from different screenshots and timeline start and finish points.
I doubt the college will come out looking good, but I'm not clear what happened

I think we have reached the stage in the game where NHS vacancies have reached such a point
that even junior staff can say so fire me for speaking out
knowing that another trust will snap them up
GOOD

Dear NHS workers and teachers and firemen and ambulance crew
screw the boss
SPEAK OUT because they cannot fire all of you
and still operate Wink Grin

Peregrina · 17/11/2019 20:02

They were thinking of voting Conservative 'to get Brexit done'.

Then tell them that trade deals take 7 -10 years, so do they want that. Meanwhile the NHS will be 'done' as in destroyed.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2019 20:04

but they want no deal
so that is project fear Sad

This person works for the NHS. But they are really concerned about the damage a second referendum would do. I know it's a different referendum on a new deal - but I worry that this message hasn't got out.

I was speaking to my local MP today - they were out campaigning - and they were saying that the media talk about Corbyn was having an effect.

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2019 20:10

Haven’t seen screen shots I’ve watched the footage. It’s absolutely disgraceful. I can see no justification for the manhandling of a blind black man out of a white institution. It’s not a college in the frame but the Union. Who have apologised unreservedly.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/11/2019 20:21

The Union never used to be "a white institution". If it has become one, that's definitely disgraceful.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/11/2019 20:23

"Reflecting the collegiate nature of the University of Oxford itself, Oxford SU is both an association of Oxford's more than 21,000 individual students and a federation of the affiliated Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), Middle Common Rooms (MCRs), Graduate Common Rooms (GCRs), and other affiliated organisations that represent all undergraduate and graduate students at the University's forty-four colleges and Permanent Private Halls.

"Individual students can opt out of membership, although this right is rarely exercised. Individual Common Rooms can also disaffiliate, although few have chosen to do so since Oxford SU started being funded from a block grant from the University rather than through affiliation fees."

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2019 20:24

I don’t think there are sufficient BAME students for it not to be tbh. Oxford is still a white institution. Which is why BAME students are put off applying and this case will not help.
