Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

I like the idea of banning MP's from having second jobs while in position

tobee · 21/11/2019 16:35

They'd have to do it really thoroughly Just. There's loads of silent partners/directorships etc as well as maybe time allowed either side of jobs and positions etc.

When you click on surveys etc they always ask if you or your family etc work for company, in journalism etc. Surely they (MPs) should have similar scrutiny.

tobee · 21/11/2019 16:36

Thanks Just. Mines still crashing, probably my phone. Stupid iOS updates!

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 16:40

Maybe people could bypass the Tory shills and post reaction videos to the Labour manifesto on YouTube ...

Her Godfather would be proud, I'm sure.

Tory voters act like they're in some kind of cult. I've just been arguing with some of them online (feel a tad dazed after the experience) and no matter what facts you give them about the utter shitness of the Tories right now and over the last few years, they keep bleating the same old crappy sound bites as their deranged but charismatic leader! I'm almost expecting them to dance naked round bonfires chanting GET BREXIT DONE GET BREXIT DONE.

@JustAnotherPoster00
There is nothing wrong with the idea of banning second jobs for MPs but increasing their salaries to the point were taking up the roles as sole incomes would be feasible for many of the kind of people who we would want in government would not be popular.

It is an unstable form of employment anyway, with considerable amounts of threat currently.

Finance wise you attract people like myself with a public service background but we also need people with law, business and banking backgrounds. The last thing we want to encourage is more career politicians. We need as wide as mix as possible. We also don't it to only be people with inherited wealth able to stand.

It doesn't seem a bad idea that politicians are engaging in the real world of work at the same time as creating laws.

Labour’s electrifying manifesto should jolt this election into life

Michael Howard used to be our MP, before we got the execrable Damian Collins. MH is actually very nice, and was a great constituency MP - got a lot of stuff done. However as Ann Widdecombe said, 'there is something of the night about him'... of the two, I'd take MH any day.

yolofish · 21/11/2019 17:02

Which is kind of a reflection when you (almost) knew where you were with politicians and didnt automatically expect them to lie through their teeth for personal gain.

BlueGingerale · 21/11/2019 17:03

No discussion of the labour manifesto?

I’m going to vote labour. And there’s nothing in there I strongly disagree with. But - do you think they can afford it? And how much of it do you think they’ll actually implement if they got in?

Electric dreams.

And there's something of the bat about her.

Why DG just why, just had the disturbing mental image of Ann Widicombe in a batsuit dropping down from the shadows saying 'I'm Batcombe'

Questions that no one is asking of the Tories, it seems ...

tobee · 21/11/2019 17:16

Do they say why Fading? Apart from "Get Brexit done!" And "Corbyn is Stalinist/Marxist/Terrorist/Maoist"?

No Tobee...they have this concrete belief that the country would be a bankrupt disaster under Labour and the way they keep referring to 'Boris' as if he is their mate is just infuriating. How can they not SEE?

Hoooo · 21/11/2019 17:21

Very impressed with labour manifesto.

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 17:21

Why DG just why, just had the disturbing mental image of Ann Widicombe in a batsuit dropping down from the shadows saying 'I'm Batcombe'

You did that all by yourself Grin

Peregrina · 21/11/2019 17:24

Someone suggested that people should be limited to ten years in Parliament. It's basically a good idea, I think, although I would relax it for people who did their ten years part way through a Parliament and allow them to continue until the next election.

DGRossetti · 21/11/2019 17:25

Seriously, this is well worth a read ...
