Westministenders: Promises, promises

BigChocFrenzy · 17/11/2019 17:46

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

I'm supposedly descended from Henry VIII Grin (although he had so many dalliances, that's not saying much Wink) but it doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone else Hmm

It's my values and ethos that give me worth and that I should be judged on.

IcedYoghurt · 19/11/2019 12:21

Just been watching BoJo sparring (very badly) at a boxing gym in London on Sky news, the two presenters could barely keep a straight face. I can't stand him but even I'm cringing for him, he looked a right bellend!

Westministenders: Promises, promises
DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 12:23

I'm descended from Charlemagne. But that is another forum completely.

Newsnight is on the iplayer.
Jeremy's interview starts 10:30 in
www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000bhql/newsnight-18112019

I've not listened as I cannot afford another smashed laptop screen Grin

QueenOfThorns · 19/11/2019 12:27

Danny Dyer has already demonstrated that he’s extremely perceptive and actually very good at seeing political bullshit for what it is. Better than me, certainly! I’m sure you all haven’t forgotten when he referred to Cameron as a twat on live TV Grin

Dusty01 · 19/11/2019 12:29

I saw it last night Listening. I just wanted to show other people the bit where EM questions him on whether we can call ourselves a democracy anymore.

I was hoping to be able to record that little bit and attach it here, but I need a bit more guidance on how to do that!

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2019 12:32

Danny Dyer is a very intelligent and articulate man
who happened to be born in a n area that gave him a speaking accent like
fingernails down a blackboard
which he eggs up for the camer a bit but its definitely real
BUT
his anti Brexit and ant freeloader rants are legendary
and he speaks well for many of those who lack his command of the language

derxa · 19/11/2019 12:33

Danny Dyer has already demonstrated that he’s extremely perceptive and actually very good at seeing political bullshit for what it is. Better than me, certainly! I’m sure you all haven’t forgotten when he referred to Cameron as a twat on live TV Well exactly.

ListeningQuietly · 19/11/2019 12:34

Danny Dyer decries Brexit / David Cameron

JustAnotherPoster00 · 19/11/2019 12:36

Funny how Tory candidates for Wales would enforce language checks on immigrants they themselves would fail.

Or is that a bit patronising ? I get confused these days

Had to pick up my son on saturday night because he got drunk, picked him up from the kebab place just after midnight, keep in mind I live in the Welsh mountains, so I get greeted to some idiots shouting at the Turkish guy because he refused to serve them at 12.10am, they shut at 12, that he cant wait for paki's like him to be sent back to their own country after Brexit, shouted can I add in a strong Essex accent, I had to bite my tounge because I know the lad, he doesnt speak a word of Welsh

QueenOfThorns · 19/11/2019 12:50

Thank you Listening, I never get tired of watching that Grin

OublietteBravo · 19/11/2019 12:51

Aaaaagh. Just can’t keep up at the moment. Mostly due to work commitments.

My poll card has arrived. It says “THIS IS A CHANGE OF POLLING STATION” in capital letters. But the polling station specified is the same one as usual (same room, same venue). Most confusing!

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 13:24

I must have been living in a cupboard because Danny Dyer’s political views had completely passed me by. I’m very heartened by them. Or is that patronising?

prettybird · 19/11/2019 13:29

Still not received our polling cards. But a friend who's a returning officer says not to worry as Glasgow doesn't even start sending them out until after nominations close.

Icantreachthepretzels · 19/11/2019 13:29

I'm descended from Charlemagne. But that is another forum completely.

Now now DGR I know you watch QI - and I know you know full well that we all are descended from Charlemagne Wink

Literally - have Western European ancestry? Then you're on the Charlemagne family tree.

However I did once watch the American version of Who Do You Think You Are - and it was Cindy Crawford (I think) Whereas the UK version tells the celebs their GGF was a pig farmer from Essex - the American version 'discovered a link' to Charlemagne. She acted like she was a long lost princess and went to speak to an expert about her grandfather ... who was also certainly descended from Charlemagne because we all are but they failed to mention that part Grin

If I thought I was descended form Henry VIII I'd be deeply ashamed keeping an eye out for gout.

derxa · 19/11/2019 13:29

Or is that patronising? Probably Grin

Mistigri · 19/11/2019 13:31

I don't even know who Danny Dyer is (off to google him now).

As far as being descended from royalty is concerned, by one estimate most Europeans are descended from Charlemagne, who was famously fecund. (Does this mean that in a few centuries, half of Europe will be able to claim that they are related to Boris Johnson?)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/11/2019 13:53

I'd've thought they would be trying to prove they were no relation.

lonelyplanetmum · 19/11/2019 14:22

At one point I was on top of impact assessments (ie when they existed and were suppressed as for the May deal).

I don't think I'd clicked that there aren't any for the current Tory agreement . In fact I thought they had been done.

In my old job we used to have to look at impact assessments. They are a standard way of looking at implementation, cost and administrative resources for most key new legislation. I just don't get why the Tories are so trusted that the population are happy to trundle along into an unvisited arrangement with assessing the impact of critical legislation to have become optional or after the fact. It's bizarre. We've become a nation of high risk takers.

business insider

Alsohuman · 19/11/2019 14:36

I think a lot of us are naive enough to assume policies have costs and impact assessments before they go into the manifesto - are you saying this isn’t the case @lonelyplanetmum?

FoldyRoll · 19/11/2019 15:21

No famous ancestors here. I once asked my dad why we had nothing to take on to antiques roadshow and he said "because we're from common stock"
Anyhoo. First election literature delivered here today. Labour. She's the incumbent in a Labour area, has signed the remain Labour pledge was supportive when I contacted her about the GRA. In short, ideal MP. Long letter castigating the tories and their deleterious effect on our region. Not one mention of Corbyn at all, but plenty of pointed remarks about doing what she believes is right rather than what she's told. Interesting.

tobee · 19/11/2019 15:51

My mum just informed me yesterday that her and dad's polling cards arrived. They had a new polling venue, according to its address. However, the map accompanying was of the old polling station Confused She phoned the council to check and it was a printing error HmmIt is their old venue after all!

DGRossetti · 19/11/2019 15:54

Boris might be more related to Saladin or his elk Grin, given his Ottoman background.

tobee · 19/11/2019 15:57

Re that Paul Brand stuff posted earlier. Just wondering how it's working out for the Tories on the ground with the "people v parliament" argument?

It's a direct lift as an idea from Farage. But it worked better for Farage as he wasn't uk parliament.

But the Tories are, as usual, underestimating the electorate and think it won't be noticed that are also relying on the people voting Tories into parliament. Trying to have it both ways!
