Hello Everyone. Just a quick one please as I've been rather, unimportantly to anyone else, busy plodding on with chores.

Lots of interesting debates going on here - all worth exploring further and I look forward to participating in them in more depth, after we get 'Brexit Started'.

I'm not rubbing my hands with glee at the failings of the Opposition, but the only way to move Brexit to the next stage, reducing the excrutiating uncertainty that both the EU and UK have lived with over the past couple of years is to return a Tory majority in the GE.

If the GE returns a majority for a clear Remain decision, I'll accept that, and not whine about it either.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 17/11/2019 18:11

What does anyone think would satisfy the country that it had decided to remain after all? Obviously if the Lib Dems got 52% of the vote and revoked I think it would probably end most of the debate for a while.

But what if Labour win with 30% of the vote and form a minority government propped up by giving the SNP another referendum.

Corbyn then puts a new 3rd deal to a referendum with 'remain' and 'dont leave' as the 2 options. No one, not even Corbyn, campaigns for the dont leave 3rd deal option so less than half the population vote and remain wins with 13 million votes on a turnout of 35%

Would that be democracy? Would that end the debate and heal the country? It would feel wrong to me.

Bearbehind · 17/11/2019 18:20

That’s the problem with the GE v the referendum walking, it can never be ‘democracy’

In the referendum everyone’s vote was worth the same.

In the GE that’s not the case - I can vote for whoever I like, but it’s not going to stop the Tories winning in my constituency.

So I don’t think the GE can end the debate, whatever the outcome.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 17/11/2019 18:58

Well it probably will end the debate (not the angst) if either Boris or Swinson wins a proper majority.

But whilst the Labour process is clear, Corbyn is refusing to say which side he is on and what the new deal will be before the election. It might be doable if he said what his deal was, put his money where his mouth was and said he would campaign for it.

What is it that Labour voters think they are voting for? Remain by the back door? Are their any leavers voting for them?

Bearbehind · 17/11/2019 19:03

I truly don’t understand the Labour position.

The party says one thing but Corbyn stays silent.

And, as I said up thread, you can pick holes the size of the moon in pledges about abolishing private schools, free broadband or free dental care, so why would anyone believe they’d actually try and negotiate a new deal then have the promised PV.

Why is that set in stone when the other stuff is blatant bollocks?

At least with the Tories and LD you know what you are voting for WRT Brexit.

I agree with Bear on this, this isn't over until its over and that's many years from now.
Do we think the Conservatives will win more seats in this election, than they did in 2017 ? If so what is different now that would make people choose them when they didn't then ? Whats improved for all those people as a result of a Conservative government ?

DustyDiamond · 17/11/2019 19:16

🐻 - my impression of the current fans of Corbyn's labour are:

  • people who are mad keen on the idea of luxury communism! (typically students & people with entry level political & historical understanding, & those who buy into politics of envy)
  • people who are performative with their politics (typically middle class, comfortably off & like to virtue signal about the poor!
They are also typically not fans of the notion that working classes or minority groups are capable of autonomous thought & actions)
  • people who are tribal labour voters and/or subscribe to the evil tories! dogma
  • remainers who are betting their last on a Remain vs remain ref so they can wank on about democracy being respected! whilst knowing it's simply a way to stymie an actual Brexit

....just my own views obvs 😉✊🌹

dusty I don’t disagree, and I think all those categories can be summed up by saying it’s people who prefer ideology over reality.

BelleHathor · 17/11/2019 20:21

Evening All! Dusty that's the exact feeling I get about this new "new labour" they all appear to be virtue signalling on speed. Good article about it in the mail today ( the Tories have 47% of the working class compared to 27% for Labour):
"Why the working class is deserting Labour: JOHN GRAY says sneering Leftists see working people as fit only for Soviet-style re-education - but Boris Johnson lets them be patriotic and feel good about life"

Well worth reading BelleHathor Star

Covers loads of the issues we've all been discussing over the weekend.

DustyDiamond · 17/11/2019 21:46

That article pretty much sums up what I've been seeing - still shitting myself about a Jezbollah win in Dec though 😩😩

Comrade Xing has opened a shiny new establishment btw ✊🌹

Excellent read BelleHathor. Just what I have been thinking.
So many middle class socialists in the Labour, they have no idea about the working class and what makes them tick. This sneering anti Tory rhetoric ain't going to wash with them.
