Westminstenders: Dissolved.

Parliament has formally been dissolved. We are now officially in an election period including purdah and spending limits. Not that all the parties haven't got campaign material out already to bypass the rules, making the rules a complete farce. And the government has made some very dodgy adverts about the fund for towns, 90% of which just happen to be marginals.

The Tory Campaign has got off to an interesting start with a dead cat dog whistle against Grenfell where many well educated people lived (Inc an architect), privately owned their property and just happened to be white. And fast asleep. I'm not sure about you but I don't tend to have huge amounts of 'common sense' when I'm snoring.

Apologies have of course been made. In true Trumpian / Bannon style. But the whistle was blown and made its desired point to its target audience. Expect many more examples before we get to the end of this campaign.

Of course the same day it was made public that the government have blocked the publication of a report into Russian Electoral Interference. Which is in no way connected to the massive amount of donations the Tory Party has been receiving lately and who Boris Johnson hangs out with.

This election is all about breaking 'The Red Wall' and the Tories taking Northern seats. So everyone between Birmingham and Cumbria is going to be particularly fed up by 12th December at people from London coming out with ridiculous stereotypes, and telling them how to vote. We await Corbyn and Johnson adopting flat caps and vowels whilst drinking a pint of bitter or mild.

As usual we've had the candidate selection process throw up a few curve balls including forcing cabinet minister Alun Cairns to resign as Welsh Secretary on the day the tories launch their campaign. Its become very clear from the list of Tory MPs who aren't standing that the party has officially split and 'one nation conservatism' is merely now a slogan Johnson throws around to pretend that the hard right of the party hasn't slung out or forced out all the moderates. On the Labour side we have the usual rows at factions in local parties fighting or being really upset at a London candidate being parachuted in.

Farage isn't standing but the Brexit Party apparently is, despite calls for an electoral pact with the Tories. Whether local parties get the memo from Leave.eu and CCHQ we will find out in time. The LDs, Greens and Plaid seem to be consolidating a Remain pact in some seats but this still splits the vote with Labour which will be a problem in some areas.

Johnson is apparently standing in Uxbridge. This does leave us with the possibility he could yet lose his seat. Swinson's seat is also far from a safe one. Corbyn will likely be safe but Islington did back the LDs as the 1st Party at the Euros with the assistance of some very pissed off Labour members.

Nothing is certain about the next 6 weeks apart from the fact it will throw up some shocks and leave us all shouting at the telly at some point.

As it happens, I wouldn't let "woke" policies alter my vote as they are all currently pro self-ID without (obvious or apparent) safeguards for biological women so are as bad as each other. The only exceptions are UKIP and (probably) Faragit's Party when he gets round to producing a manifesto Hmm

I am pro-trans rights - but I am also pro the rights of biological women (I refuse to use the term "cis").

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:15

Apologies for getting heated here. I have a trans woman friend, and she's been through hell to get to her now ok mental state. I get really pissed off when people imply that she's a problem. Funny thing is, you'd probably call her a GC feminist. Thinks trans people have unique support needs and shouldn't be in a woman's refuge and such.

Mistigri · 07/11/2019 18:17

Women and girls - especially vulnerable ones - are far more affected by other issues. If you care about vulnerable women and girls then criminal justice, reproductive health, immigration and benefits/housing should be your top priorities.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:17

People born male should never ever be in a woman's refuge.

Mistigri · 07/11/2019 18:18

I'm very unwoke. My lesbian daughter once called me terf. But I absolutely refuse to get into unwoker-than-thou politics when there are more pressing priorities.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:18

Pressed send too soon. Your friend sounds lovely M but there are a lot of men who will use trans people to prey upon women and girls. We all know it.

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:19

Misti has the right track here. Fix the benefits system, make child support payable by the govt and they have to collect it from the absent parent, fix the broken criminal justice system, fully reinstate legal aid, etc.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:19

And the LibDems are cheering this on! I would LOVE to see Brexit stopped but I am not sure the price is worth it if it means that shower get into power.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 07/11/2019 18:19

I keep checking wiki to see who my candidates are. Getting more despondent each time. Greens instead of lib dems (who may have had a small chance) tory who won last time (very proleave) with the brexit party backing down to support Tory and still no labour candidate. So it will be a landslide Tory win again. my vote is pointless and I feel powerless. I have emailed Con MP many times and have never received anything beyond standard party line on brexit. What is the point?!

Mistigri · 07/11/2019 18:19

People born male should never ever be in a woman's refuge.

Agree. But first there has to be a refuge, huh? Or you in favour of solving this problem the Tory way, by defunding all the refuges?

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:20

Define a lot Fading.

Hoooo · 07/11/2019 18:20

Telling us what we "should" care about...

Nice.

Self ID bulllshit is the most dangerous threat to womens rights atm.

Because if the very definition of "woman" is now seen as offensive and uneccessary then it's far, far easier to make the case we need no protections at all.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:20

Fuck no. Hate everything about the Tories.

TatianaLarina · 07/11/2019 18:21

No but they are very noisy and very good at shutting down debate

And most importantly in changing conditions for women and impacting their rights - gender neutral changing rooms, toilets, wards, school toilets etc, taking up positions as women’s officers etc.

Hoooo · 07/11/2019 18:21

Fortunately LDs stand no chance here.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:22

One look on Twitter will show you the men lining up to abuse women as they hide behind this issue.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/11/2019 18:22

But first there has to be a refuge, huh? Or you in favour of solving this problem the Tory way, by defunding all the refuges?

This ^^

Absolutely.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2019 18:22

The SDP are the anti-EU remnants that left when most of the SDP united with the Liberals to become the LDems.
They are hardcore Brexiters, totally opposed to my core value / aims

Their policy on the website is out of date, written before Non-Brexit day, BUT they wanted to leave on that day even if it meant No Deal:

https://sdp.org.uk/policies/brexit/

We support ratification of the new Withdrawal Agreement so long as that can be achieved by October 31.

If it cannot be then we must leave the EU on October 31 without a deal – so-called WTO Brexit.
Our departure from the EU must not be further delayed.

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:24

So there's a few hundred assholes on Twitter.

placemats · 07/11/2019 18:25

Trans people are as valuable as women

What about the men? Are they not valuable too? TheMShip

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2019 18:25

We need @elements for her "hair on fire" peptalk

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:26

I'm going to have to disagree on the priorities with you Hooo. I think that self id is a battle for later.

Random18 · 07/11/2019 18:27

If you do not vote for Labour / Lib Dem because of policies you disagree with that is 100% your choice.

However you are essentially supporting the Tory's (unless you are a lucky bugger in Scotland and can vote SNP).

So we may not get a hard left government and we may not get women who were not born as woman.

We will get No Deal, we will get people dying as a result of no deal. And all the other terrifying issues that No Deal will bring.

I don't want both my children (boy and girl) to lose the rights that I have been so lucky to have. To have a worse future than I have had.

And that is essentially what will happen if we have a tory brexit.

FadingStar · 07/11/2019 18:29

I actually do see Brexit as the more pressing issue...and I believe that Self ID will crash and burn once people see clearly the implications of it. Sunlight is all it ever needed. Or maybe I'm just an optimist.😭
