Parliament has formally been dissolved. We are now officially in an election period including purdah and spending limits. Not that all the parties haven't got campaign material out already to bypass the rules, making the rules a complete farce. And the government has made some very dodgy adverts about the fund for towns, 90% of which just happen to be marginals.

The Tory Campaign has got off to an interesting start with a dead cat dog whistle against Grenfell where many well educated people lived (Inc an architect), privately owned their property and just happened to be white. And fast asleep. I'm not sure about you but I don't tend to have huge amounts of 'common sense' when I'm snoring.

Apologies have of course been made. In true Trumpian / Bannon style. But the whistle was blown and made its desired point to its target audience. Expect many more examples before we get to the end of this campaign.

Of course the same day it was made public that the government have blocked the publication of a report into Russian Electoral Interference. Which is in no way connected to the massive amount of donations the Tory Party has been receiving lately and who Boris Johnson hangs out with.

This election is all about breaking 'The Red Wall' and the Tories taking Northern seats. So everyone between Birmingham and Cumbria is going to be particularly fed up by 12th December at people from London coming out with ridiculous stereotypes, and telling them how to vote. We await Corbyn and Johnson adopting flat caps and vowels whilst drinking a pint of bitter or mild.

As usual we've had the candidate selection process throw up a few curve balls including forcing cabinet minister Alun Cairns to resign as Welsh Secretary on the day the tories launch their campaign. Its become very clear from the list of Tory MPs who aren't standing that the party has officially split and 'one nation conservatism' is merely now a slogan Johnson throws around to pretend that the hard right of the party hasn't slung out or forced out all the moderates. On the Labour side we have the usual rows at factions in local parties fighting or being really upset at a London candidate being parachuted in.

Farage isn't standing but the Brexit Party apparently is, despite calls for an electoral pact with the Tories. Whether local parties get the memo from Leave.eu and CCHQ we will find out in time. The LDs, Greens and Plaid seem to be consolidating a Remain pact in some seats but this still splits the vote with Labour which will be a problem in some areas.

Johnson is apparently standing in Uxbridge. This does leave us with the possibility he could yet lose his seat. Swinson's seat is also far from a safe one. Corbyn will likely be safe but Islington did back the LDs as the 1st Party at the Euros with the assistance of some very pissed off Labour members.

Nothing is certain about the next 6 weeks apart from the fact it will throw up some shocks and leave us all shouting at the telly at some point.

We’re going to end up with a Parliament full of extremists now. God help us.

Merename · 06/11/2019 20:46

Good riddance to Watson! First good news in weeks.

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2019 20:49

Remember suspended Tory MP Charlie Elphicke

HuffPost UK also understands that the Dover Conservative party is exploring whether it can support independent Charlie Elphicke rather than run its own election candidate.

Those Labour and Momentum comments mentioned by Red adds more to the belief that the Labour Party right now is paranoid and only concerned with itself.

Nobody seems to be interested in using their brain or being pragmatic in leading the 3 parties.

placemats · 06/11/2019 20:50

PMK and thanks Red

Not so surprised at Tom Watson's resignation. I hope Yvette Cooper gets the role.

It seems now that no one wants to win this election, which is fast turning into a hot political potato.

Interesting times indeed. I look forward to watching HIGNFY on Friday.

tobee · 06/11/2019 20:53

Taking back control?
Strong and stable government?

Or

Psycho drama
Basket case?

Our country right now

placemats · 06/11/2019 20:53

Also, I believe this is the pivotal point in the break up of the UK and NI.

It's certainly going to happen. Good luck England and Wales.

exwhyzed · 06/11/2019 20:54

Is there still time for a new party to form and field candidates?

I've had a feeling in my waters for around 18 months that there is a lib/lab/modcon alliance just waiting to happen.

It's a party I would vote for.

Random18 · 06/11/2019 20:54

I've been a sent for a while and just looking at threads for 1st time in a while.

I actually think Tim Watson went too far a couple of times.

BUT he is moderate.

I am truly terrified of this election now with all the decent MPs standing down across parties.

I will most likely vote Labour but it's not an easy choice and it is truly a case of the lesser evil. But if all the moderates go...........

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2019 20:58

Is there still time for a new party to form and field candidates?

If they aren't registered with the electoral commission by now I don't think they can.

It's been a brutal couple of years and moderate MPs on all sides have been attacked by everyone. It used to be you would reliably vote with your party and you would benefit from the broad umbrella of being in a large party.

Like everything else, Brexit has blown that apart. It's been a bloody toxic culture in the HoP with the repeated deadlines and very little hope of an end in sight. If an MP had posted about this on Mumsnet, I think the advice would be to appeal to management (which they can't) or leave.

Random18 · 06/11/2019 21:03

I also think Watson would have probably lost his seat.

West Brom and Sandwell in general is a place that has often been forgotten about.

The west Midlands in general is forgotten about.

It's also faced much more immigration than many areas over the years.

Wages are significantly lower than other parts of the countries. And there is a lot of poverty.

IMO its not an area which has woken up to the lies yet. It will still be a strong Brexit area.

tobee · 06/11/2019 21:03

Can't see an En Marche! equivalent having time to ride in and save us!

Omnishambles Clusterfuck

So next week we have :
Public Trump impeachment hearings

Hoooo · 06/11/2019 21:13

Much though I admire Watson, David is surely right. If you proclaim the virtues of staying and fighting, you can't walk away from the battle.

I am afraid I don’t agree with this Watson acclamation, and not just because of the VIP sexual abuse hoax. But because he helped, in effect, to disarm the moderate opposition to Corbyn. In the end he wouldn’t act.

SwedishEdith · 06/11/2019 21:17

Anyway, if you didn't watch it, try to catch Andrew Neil's pulverisation of Nadhim Zahawi on his show this evening - should be on iplayer. It was a magnificent car crash.

exwhyzed · 06/11/2019 21:17

I don't think things like theyworkforyou etc help at all.

I hate seeing screenshots on social media saying x voted for this and against this. Absolutely no understanding of the whipping process or that MPs might vote against policies they feel don't go far enough. A lot of lib/lab MPs have that they voted against gay marriage against their name when actually they voted down a policy they felt didn't go far enough to give marriage equality.

I feel that in the future this will be seen as the dark ages of social media and politics.

I don't like the turmoil but if it leads to an end of two party politics, good.

As someone in the safest of Tory seats I can only watch on with bewilderment and interest.

tobee · 06/11/2019 21:20

I keep thinking "there won't be anyone left to stand soon!" And then remember that there will be. And who they're likely to be. Hmm

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 06/11/2019 21:22

I don't blame any of them for not wanting to win. No one wants to have to deal with brexit. Lib Dem's would revoke and deal with it that way. Tories would have to put their money where their mouth is and deliver their promises which they don't want to do. And labour? Well, who knows what they'd do! Pv after securing a new deal? Neither labour nor the tories want to deliver brexit and it's obvious from all the behaviour over the past 3 years. I personally think Corbyn is biding his time and playing the long game. The character assassinations in the media encourages voters to not vote for him thereby making brexit not his problem to fix. He is ensuring the tories have to deal with their own shit. Time will tell but I'm not sure he's as useless as he makes out. Boris is all blister whereas Corbyn is quiet and tolerates the bluster whilst lying in wait. Labours time will come. Maybe not this time but it will come. I think the Lib Dem's will do well. They made gains before and will have the support of remainers as they are the only true remain party. I don't agree with other views of theirs but brexit is the most important right now.

TiddleTaddleTat · 06/11/2019 21:26

@BercowsPoliticalPumpkin I agree and have been thinking the same, Corbyn knows that Johnson has support and if the tories were to win this election they will be associated with all the shit associated with a hard Brexit. Corbyn is playing the long game.
