Westminstenders: Dissolved.

Parliament has formally been dissolved. We are now officially in an election period including purdah and spending limits. Not that all the parties haven't got campaign material out already to bypass the rules, making the rules a complete farce. And the government has made some very dodgy adverts about the fund for towns, 90% of which just happen to be marginals.

The Tory Campaign has got off to an interesting start with a dead cat dog whistle against Grenfell where many well educated people lived (Inc an architect), privately owned their property and just happened to be white. And fast asleep. I'm not sure about you but I don't tend to have huge amounts of 'common sense' when I'm snoring.

Apologies have of course been made. In true Trumpian / Bannon style. But the whistle was blown and made its desired point to its target audience. Expect many more examples before we get to the end of this campaign.

Of course the same day it was made public that the government have blocked the publication of a report into Russian Electoral Interference. Which is in no way connected to the massive amount of donations the Tory Party has been receiving lately and who Boris Johnson hangs out with.

This election is all about breaking 'The Red Wall' and the Tories taking Northern seats. So everyone between Birmingham and Cumbria is going to be particularly fed up by 12th December at people from London coming out with ridiculous stereotypes, and telling them how to vote. We await Corbyn and Johnson adopting flat caps and vowels whilst drinking a pint of bitter or mild.

As usual we've had the candidate selection process throw up a few curve balls including forcing cabinet minister Alun Cairns to resign as Welsh Secretary on the day the tories launch their campaign. Its become very clear from the list of Tory MPs who aren't standing that the party has officially split and 'one nation conservatism' is merely now a slogan Johnson throws around to pretend that the hard right of the party hasn't slung out or forced out all the moderates. On the Labour side we have the usual rows at factions in local parties fighting or being really upset at a London candidate being parachuted in.

Farage isn't standing but the Brexit Party apparently is, despite calls for an electoral pact with the Tories. Whether local parties get the memo from Leave.eu and CCHQ we will find out in time. The LDs, Greens and Plaid seem to be consolidating a Remain pact in some seats but this still splits the vote with Labour which will be a problem in some areas.

Johnson is apparently standing in Uxbridge. This does leave us with the possibility he could yet lose his seat. Swinson's seat is also far from a safe one. Corbyn will likely be safe but Islington did back the LDs as the 1st Party at the Euros with the assistance of some very pissed off Labour members.

Nothing is certain about the next 6 weeks apart from the fact it will throw up some shocks and leave us all shouting at the telly at some point.

TheMShip I have a transwoman friend too. She/he (they don't care) know they are male born. This makes them a bigot and a T**f and they no longer use social media.

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:30

placemats I'm wondering if saying "not all men" will get a laugh or only further raise hackles Grin

Seriously though, yes. All humans.

SwedishEdith · 07/11/2019 18:31

The SDP are bloody annoying though because that party name would be very useful now.

TheMShip · 07/11/2019 18:32

My friend talks openly about transitioning, so yes, another who acknowledges she was born male. The change saved her life, I think.

Alsohuman · 07/11/2019 18:35

Do you know what? I’d vote for Satan to keep the Tories out. Because under the most right wing government this country’s ever seen with no grown ups to temper their worst excesses, nobody will have any rights. Johnson with free reign for five years? I dread to think what state we’ll be in if that’s allowed to happen - and it will if people don’t vote against it.

placemats · 07/11/2019 18:37

The LibDems are going to milk Brexit/Remain for all it's worth in order to gain votes, is my view.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/11/2019 18:40

Swedish Exactly.
the last lot to break away from Labour nicked the best name !

mrslaughan · 07/11/2019 18:42

@BigChocFrenzy - sorry - miles behind and struggling to catch up. I don't believe Israel should be dissolved- but I do believe that the Palestinians deserve there own country and self determination. I have believed it for a long time, but it was strengthened by having a Palestinian best friend in Dubai...... and seeing first hand what it meant to be stateless.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/11/2019 18:44

The LibDems are going to milk Brexit/Remain for all it's worth in order to gain votes, is my view.

As will the Tories and its why I think Labour has made the right call in making their campaign about national issues, whether you voted Remain or Leave, your wages still arent high enough, your rent is too high, you pay too much in commuting fares, childcare is still too expensive, our NHS and school system are close to collapse and in 1 of the richest countries in the world we have too many homeless people and too many foodbanks

TheElementsSong · 07/11/2019 18:53

Fuck sake. All the major parties are infected by Woke. If I'm going to vote on the basis of NotWoke, who do I vote for? BXP? UKIP? DUP? Somebody must have suggestions, right?

Now, everybody has their own personal hair on fire. If somebody's fire is WokeLadyBollocks, it's not up to me to berate them for not sharing my fire which is Brexit; also I recognise that just because somebody's fire is WokeLadyBollocks that doesn't mean they don't care about other stuff. And I would appreciate the courtesy vice versa, if that's OK?

But actually I'd be genuinely interested to have some suggestions, from somebody whose fire is WokeLadyBollocks, who exactly they're planning to vote for.

MockersthefeMANist · 07/11/2019 18:55

I’d vote for Satan to keep the Tories out.

I agree with Old Nick.

But what I normally say is, I'd sooner vote for cannibals.

Nye Bevan was Right about some Tories.

Volvemos · 07/11/2019 18:56

Two possible strategies for deciding who you’ll vote for Red.

  1. Numerical: List the top x issues for you. Decide whether the most important issues warrant a weighting I.e. most important issue warrants multiplier of five, second most a multiplier of three, or if say top three issues each need a multiplier of three, second tier a multiplier of two, others just a single weighting. Rank each party you’d conceivably be able to vote on that issue, using a score out of x. A high number is good, a low number is bad. Look at the scores. You might also want to add a multiplier based on “likelihood of winning”.
  2. Intuitive: Go with your gut in the booth.

Or do both. Option 1 can also be fairly telling as a process, bit like deciding something by flipping a coin and gauging from your reaction to the result how you really feel about it.

NEW: Boris Johnson says in Scotland...

  1. Labour have done a deal with the SNP
  1. They’d hold a referendum next year

Both of these claims are lies.

Because...

  1. Only yesterday the Scottish Labour leader ruled out a deal with the SNP.
  1. Jeremy Corbyn has been clear no indy ref in first couple of years of Labour govt.

You may question the veracity of Labour’s promises, but not true to say they’ve pledged otherwise.

Volvemos · 07/11/2019 19:00

Anyway, BoJo has said He’s giving a cast iron guarantee of no Indyref2.

Looks like we could be following Spain, just a couple of years behind.

And I wonder how cast iron that guarantee would be if the SNP offered to be his Kingmaker in exchange for a referendum. I think they wouldn’t trust him enough to even offer though, but, strange times.

prettybird · 07/11/2019 19:02

One of ds' friends is now a trans male. Ds accepts him totally as one of the blokes. But his friend is sensible enough to have given up his (physical, contact) sport as it wouldn't be safe for him. But not all those who transition the other way, from male to female, in similar sports are as sensitive or sensible - and thereby making it unsafe (or simply unfair) for the biological women who play. Sad

But as Elements has described: our hair is on fire. Shock

The immediate priority is Brexit and whether you trust the Conservatives to look after the most basic of rights: UC, women's rights in general, workers rights, environmental protections, environmental protections, domestic abuse, the rape clause/2 child cap, the NHS and Social care (the burden for which falls mostly on women), decent state education for all and generally support for the poorest and most vulnerable.

All the parties (except UKIP and I presume the Faragit Party) profess to be support self-ID - they're just not all as "out and proud" (Wink) about it. Not all parties think that the poor and most vulnerable are even worth protecting Angry

So for the moment, I know where my priority is.

MockersthefeMANist · 07/11/2019 19:04

BoJo has said He’s giving a cast iron guarantee of no Indyref2.

...Or he'll do what, this time, after the bulldozer and the ditch?

Er, actually he agreed to be on Sky News and then ducked us. He wasn’t on your show at ‘that time.’ My rather clever team have created a simultaneous timeline to illustrate the point.

Glad my questions were helpful. Thanks for watching.

Have a great weekend Julia.

Er, the reason @JamesCleverly was not on @SkyNews was because he had not been booked on that show. He had been booked into a studio to talk to me on @talkRADIO at that time. Which he then did - and was asked many of those same questions

Sostenueto · 07/11/2019 19:07

I always side with the underdogs or no hopers or no one listens to me type so I'm voting green!

Hoooo · 07/11/2019 19:09

I'm voting labour elements and I give not one rubbery fuck what you think about that.

thecatfromjapan · 07/11/2019 19:10

I'm feeling quite cross with Tom Watson, too, Mother. For much the same reasons. Even though I feel it's unfair of me.

borntobequiet · 07/11/2019 19:10

The trans madness will pass. The damage from Brexit is real, immediate and will create the sort of conditions where all sorts of madness and untruth will thrive. So I will hold my nose and vote LD.

TatianaLarina · 07/11/2019 19:10

Who does that?

It’s so odd that I wonder whether he thought that due to his involvement in the VIP paedophile case people were just going to keep going at him til he resigned.

Clutching at straws. But I just can’t understand why he’s bailing now.

Unless he’s just decided that he can’t fight the Corbyn-Milne-McCluskey-Murphy axis. But with a potential new influx of Labour MPs there’s all to play for.

TatianaLarina · 07/11/2019 19:12

The damage is absolutely real when there are girls not going to the toilet all day and staying off school when they have their period due to trans toilets. That’s what schools are reporting.
