Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

We can see you leaving!

I don't just want out.
This is the future of our very divided country, the bill needs scrutiny and assessments.
The NI situation could easily end in violence the Scottish situation in independence.
If this is worth doing then it has to be worth taking some time and care over.
( I'm sure it isn't worth doing right enough but rushing it will only make it worse)

Socksontheradiator · 19/10/2019 15:06

It all takes some keeping up with, doesn't it? My head is spinning.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 19/10/2019 15:08

sorry, should have read back - can anyone give me a potted update pls?

QueenWhatevs · 19/10/2019 15:08

I'll be honest, having avoided these threads for a while (terrible for my anxiety), I don't really completely understand what has happened.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/10/2019 15:09

I think BJ will get the deal through next week but the legislation may be tightened up by Parliament in the process to reduce his room for manoeuvre in the negotiation phase during transition.
Letwin has closed off the no deal due to failure to legislate loophole. He hasn’t blocked the deal per se.

Sebastian Payne@SebastianePayne
10 independent Conservatives voted for the Letwin amendment:

  • Guto Bebb
  • Nick Boles
  • Ken Clarke
  • David Gauke
  • Justine Greening
  • Dominic Grieve
  • Philip Hammond
  • Oliver Letwin
  • Amber Rudd
  • Antionette Sandbach

Can't see these MPs getting the whip back anytime soon.

'Some chick' IS a misogynistic comment though. First thought I had when I read it.

BoZo could well find himself explaining to a Court why he lied next week.

So bringing back discussion of Johnson’s WA on Monday?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/10/2019 15:14

Quick summary
BJ wanted Parliament to approve his deal today
Sir Oliver Letwin and others were concerned that the deal could be approved but the implementing legislation delayed/filibustered so that the deal was not part of UK law by 31st Oct leading to a no deal crash out
Letwin placed a vote before Parliament saying the deal cannot be approved without the legislation so approval of the deal is delayed
Letwin won
BJ now has to ask the EU for an extension under the Benn Act
The Withdrawal legislation will be put before Parliament next week.

ArseDarkly · 19/10/2019 15:14

My god how utterly pathetic - trying to decide what to do if our 2-year-old PM won't send a letter to the nasty EU

placemats · 19/10/2019 15:14

Who voted against from Labour?

Outsomnia · 19/10/2019 15:15

Seems to me that deep down, no one apart from erg and certain other Ultras actually WANT to leave.

The rest of them are just being tactical, looking at their Constituencies. But in their hearts.....?

Anyway this is better than nothing but Quo Vadis now, nod to Tusk.

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2019 15:15

6 Lab MPs voted against Letwin

Barron, Campbell, Fitzpatrick, Flint, Hoey and Mann.

Oh and well done to A Sandbach for her clear speech.

DarkAtEndOfUK · 19/10/2019 15:15

Misogyny is what a new Britain outside the EU will be founded on. Let's be in no doubt about that. FFS if this is merely another delay, it will be founded on what everyone is agreed is a worse deal than May's - but it was brokered by a lying shit of a self-important, self-publicising male, so it's better. Women are being betrayed by the UK in every way, every day.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 15:17

If Smug hasn't followed due process in announcing the changes proposed business on Monday (effectively bringing back part of the WA Bill to vote on it) - then will Bercow be in his rights to not allow the debate? Confused

This thread is my go to source of info so hugely grateful to Red and all who update here. But how on Earth can BJ not request an extension?? The man must think he’s really pretty special !? 🤨

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/10/2019 15:18

JRM looked sick when the Letwin result was announced. BJ is Teflon by comparison.

placemats · 19/10/2019 15:18

So the Government is bringing forward for debate on Monday a relative section of the WA.
