I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

Jonathan Powelll@jnpowell1*

The funny side of the No 10 claim they have got rid of the backstop is that
they have in fact transformed it from a fallback into the definitive future arrangement for NI
with the province remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union.

< and GB diverging massively from NI - that's the plan >

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:08

"I’m afraid only one side is staring defeat in the face"

That's the side that values the Union

Now that Scotland sees how easily the Tories will sell out a UK nation for profit, I can't blame them if they leg it

Dusty01 · 18/10/2019 12:13

Can't someone pass a bill, or something - or they all have a vote to say they've not had enough time to look at this New deal or discuss it?

"MPs will not see economic impact assessment of PM's deal before tomorrow's vote, No 10 says"

This kind of thing surely is proof that it's all being rushed through and it's unfair for MPs to have to make snap decisions in this way. I don't know much about politics, but know enough to understand that this rush is purposely designed by Boris to get his way - again.

BUT in any other situation surely everyone would stand together and say they can't go ahead with this now. They don't have enough information. Is that possible? Why is nobody doing this?

ImNotYourGranny · 18/10/2019 12:15

I wonder if Theresa May will vote for this deal?

TatianaLarina · 18/10/2019 12:15

I admit that a Conservative & Unionist PM so comprehensively selling out NI was never on my horizon

He’s not a Unionist PM. Last time round the DUP ditched May’s deal, directly after a meeting with BJ and Raab, stating they did not believe BJ was a Unionist.

If May’s deal went through NI would have been ditched in the backstop.

CendrillonSings · 18/10/2019 12:16

Now that Scotland sees how easily the Tories will sell out a UK nation for profit, I can't blame them if they leg it

Thus granting the Conservatives a massive permanent electoral advantage in the rest of the UK. Oh noos, however will we cope? Grin

mrslaughan · 18/10/2019 12:21

@CendrillonSings how do you sleep at night - unless you are v v wealthy (and I mean 10's if millions)- no one wins with this deal. Stop thinking feudally and start thinking about the sort of society you want for you kids.....
@Hester54 I have links to Lincolnshire- but all the clusters of leavers that I have contact with are fucked as they are farmers/landowners and now don't have workers or people to pick there crops..... infact one famously said after the referendum that she wanted to stop immigration- but they still needed the workers 😳

prettybird · 18/10/2019 12:24

I agree with you BigChoc - I was just reporting albeit 2nd hand Blush what Sammy Wilson said.

We also don't know just how much of a bung they might be negotiating behind the scenes - not just financial (to make up for being economically advantaged by this deal Confused) but also making any investigations into "Ash for Cash" (and other nefarious activities, including loyalist paramilitaries and state collusion with them) go away.

But nevertheless, I too would be surprised if the party of "We will never surrender" did in fact surrender Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:25

"If May’s deal went through NI would have been ditched in the backstop."

Only if both the EU and UK later agreed to switch from the UK to the NI-only backstop
Not if Labour or a coalition or even a moderate Tory govt were in power

Under this WA, it's not a backstop, it's a fixed future state
Choosing a future trade deal that is SM + a Customs Arrangement would be the only way to stop NI from being permanently separated from the UK by an Irish Sea border
i.e. a BRINO under a very different govt

CendrillonSings · 18/10/2019 12:27

Stop thinking feudally and start thinking about the sort of society you want for you kids.....

A non-socialist one, so that I can actually leave them the money I’ve made without it being confiscated by some grabby loons. To do that, Corbynite Labour needs to be crushed at the ballot box by any means necessary. Then I’ll sleep really well...

TatianaLarina · 18/10/2019 12:27

Only if both the EU and UK later agreed to switch from the UK to the NI-only backstop. Not if Labour or a coalition or even a moderate Tory govt were in power

Which they are not. 😬

Basilpots · 18/10/2019 12:27

Be difficult if the DUP/Hoey abstain rather than vote against same with some of the Labour MPs can’t see it failing then.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:28

pretty No bung, or even stopping any Cash of Ash investigation should buy off the DUP
.... unless their hard Unionism is as fake as the Tory kind

Hester54 · 18/10/2019 12:30

mrslaughan Farmers and land owners, we obviously know different ends of society, know wonder leave vote was a surprise to you

mrslaughan · 18/10/2019 12:30

@CendrillonSings fair enough - I don't want a socialist one either - but you don't see me banging the drum for a facist one like you are....

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:30

Dumping NI and moving the Level Playing Field to the PD shows where the Tories are heading:
US colony status

but Cendrillon doesn't care, so long as she keeps all her money

Dusty01 · 18/10/2019 12:31

But Cendrillon - this is going to affect you too. It's not defeat for anyone but the British people.

Who are you?

Are you so wealthy that you are untouchable?

All these people commenting here are worrying on behalf of the whole nation. They are concerned for the likes of you too. No one is going to win out of this apart from a very select few, which I am guessing you are not a part of.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:32

Fintal O'Toole:

"Blessed are the poo-polishers, for they shall see the kingdom of Brexit."

54321go · 18/10/2019 12:34

{ infact one famously said after the referendum that she wanted to stop immigration- but they still needed the workers}

So Leavers can't possibly work out that some of the landowners/farmers are deliberately flouting elements of laws to get 'cheap' labour to enhance their profit, and that in reality UK shoppers should be paying the proper price for produce rather than the apparent 'ever cheaper' concept which hurts both people (workers) and the environment (destructive and unsustainable farming methods).
Put the food prices up but also ensure the workers are paid a decent wage. Farmers have a dual role in that they should be stewarding the land, so NOT using methods that kill biodiversity, increase the leeching of nitrates into the ground and groundwater and encouraging flooding in some areas. It is all connected but will not be seen and understood by those following BoJo or Farages arse.

mrslaughan · 18/10/2019 12:34

@Hester54 - I never said it was a surprise- and just because I have connections in Lincolnshire like that - doesn't mean I don't have other connections.
I was concerned when other connections were saying that Labour MPs and reps were having doors slammed in their faces in deprived housing estates up north - places considered Labour heartlands.

You make terrible assumptions- like many on Mumsnet..... but hey ho , I prefer not to be put in a box, it's just such a shame you decide to stay in the one British society has dictated to you....

thecatfromjapan · 18/10/2019 12:35

I doubt Cendrillon is that well off.

The well off have their money tied up in trust funds and secured against inheritance tax. That's the level of well off you have to be to benefit from this Brexit.

No. Cendrillon 's posts remind me of the bitter people, indulging in a fantasy of power. Secretly loathed by the children. Facing old age with anger & resentment.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/10/2019 12:41

"Now that Scotland sees how easily the Tories will sell out a UK nation for profit, I can't blame them if they leg it
Thus granting the Conservatives a massive permanent electoral advantage in the rest of the UK"

I gather Cendrillon is the type of English Conservative who'd happily dump all the other UK nations for profit or for electoral advantage

When did the Tory party remove the "unionist" bit from its DNA ?

Clearly May hasn't - she could have got the same sort of ERG-pleaser as BJ if she'd been prepared to sell out NI for a US FTA
I wonder if party loyalty will trump all for her, or whether she can't bring herself to vote for this WA on Saturday ?

Basilpots · 18/10/2019 12:44

Cat old age now there is actually a problem for the Tory Party. A majority of their voters are in the older age bracket so have a ‘limited shelf’ (in the nicest possible way). Unless they start doing something to attract younger voters they will start to struggle.

Is there some sort of switch that goes off that means you vote Tory when you hit fifty?? If not they are in serious trouble in the near future.

I’m heading that way and already have some of the ‘characteristics’ that would suggest I ought to vote for them. But there is no way I could ever vote for them in their current guise and I am sure I’m not the only one.

DGRossetti · 18/10/2019 12:45

I think the environment is going to "steal" peoples savings and pensions long before any grabby socialists can get to it. Let's hope you can eat gold.

CendrillonSings · 18/10/2019 12:45

You got me, I’m really poor. I’m secretly waiting for Jeremy’s largesse to rain down upon me come the revolution.
