I don’t watch much TV. DH has it on and within the space of an hour there’s been 3 Get ready for Brexit on 31st Oct adverts. Have these been shown regularly or are they recent?
I am a lurker on The Brexit threads so keep up to date with all the topics/opinions.

Parker231 · 20/09/2019 20:35

September - post Brexit if you are UK citizen you will need to satisfy the EU country you want to work or live in visa and residency requirements. If we loose the freedom of movement that automatic right will be lost.

DustyDiamond · 20/09/2019 22:01

Instead of addressing the issues politicians have been busy being "Internationalist" whilst looking down and labelling people with genuine concerns "deplorable".

YY to this

DustyDiamond · 20/09/2019 22:03

I've no idea Thistime, sorry 😐

I only really watch stuff on catch up now & fast fwd through adverts wherever possible

DustyDiamond · 20/09/2019 22:16

Belle - I saw this thread on twitter earlier & it has an interesting take on the basis of the middle class anger towards working class voters.
(It's by @IBrexiter)

Middle class Remainers are not distressed about the UK leaving the EU.

They don’t know anything about the EU and they’ve never cared.

They are distressed because they feel that they are losing control of high politics.

A group of people, essentially the British poor, have intruded upon high politics by voting for Brexit.

It’s a group of people the middle classes have never met, do not understand, feel vaguely guilty about and are frightened of.

It’s a group of people who middle class Remainers feel ought to be excluded from big geopolitical, constitutional, economic and business decisions.

I know this because I am one of them. Middle class, private school, metropolitan liberal, lawyer, big house etc.

They are not struggling to reconcile themselves to Brexit, they are struggling to reconcile themselves to the idea of equality - the idea that all people are of equal value and should have an equal say in how and by whom they are governed.

To understand the Brexit debate, you have to understand that it is is a proxy war between elitists and egalitarians.

It’s many other things too, but in my view this is what is really going on.

ps. this is a thread about middle-class Remainers.

Stop replying to me saying "I'm a Remainer but I'm not middle class".

It isn't about you then is it, just like if I wrote a thread about clowns it wouldn't be a thread about gardeners.

BelleHathor · 20/09/2019 22:40

Dusty Excellent tweeter who gets it especially the "They are not struggling to reconcile themselves to Brexit, they are struggling to reconcile themselves to the idea of equality - the idea that all people are of equal value and should have an equal say in how and by whom they are governed. To understand the Brexit debate, you have to understand that it is is a proxy war between elitists and egalitarians."

Brexit and Trump are just the hammers that are being used to destroy the system that is not working for everyone anymore.

Jason118 · 20/09/2019 22:44

@Septembersunrays People's lives were very badly affected by the eu - like how?

and Tony Blair working policies and workers rites. - nothing to do with the EU, a UK issue then.

So no, not nonsense, you seem to be confusing 'nonsense' with 'sense'

Bearbehind · 20/09/2019 23:20

I expect the winning option to be accepted & enacted - to overturn it is not acceptable.

Isn’t that just the problemL

You and every other Leaver β€˜expect the winning option to be accepted and enabled’

Yet not a single one of you knows what you are accepting or how to enable it.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 20/09/2019 23:28

"I do blame the extremists from each side of the divide for poisoning Brexit & stoking division."

The problem is that Brexit is the poison. The only cure is to revoke.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 20/09/2019 23:30

Oh, and Dusty's ridiculous paste upthread is a patent load of bollocks. It's much like saying all leave voters are racists. There may be a lot that are, but not necessarily all of them.

MysteryTripAgain · 21/09/2019 03:10

@DorisDaysDadsDogsDead

Revoke can only be achieved by vote. The parties campaign with revoke or leave in their manifesto. People choose accordingly. If a party, or coalition of parties, whose policy is to revoke gains a majority then the are elected and proceed with the revoke.

No other way is possible. Bad losers squealing revoke because they don’t like the result is not the correct way

ragged · 21/09/2019 07:21

The part I understand about the Brexit debate, is that people like Bannon , Bichill & Brendon O'Neill WANT to make it into a proxy war between elitists and egalitarians.

Them & their supporters have an agenda of hoping to capitalise on economic chaos & social divisions to hurt the people they resent. That's why the people often treated as having most legitimate viewpoint in this situation are not 'experts' with evidence but rather individuals with anger. The Mad Win.

twofingerstoEverything · 21/09/2019 07:59

Jesus, that Tweet. Are people still trying to frame this as some kind of class war? And they believe it because it was written by a self-proclaimed 'Middle class, private school, metropolitan liberal, lawyer, big house etc.'

Hilarious Grin

twofingerstoEverything · 21/09/2019 08:03

BelleHathor Brexit and Trump are just the hammers that are being used to destroy the system that is not working for everyone anymore.

Are you saying there was a time in history when the system did work for everyone. When was that then?

Nationalism comes and goes (usually after ending disatrously). Brexit and Trump are symptoms of nationalism. They just want to put their own 'system' in place and you can bet your life that 'system' will definitely NOT work for everyone, or even for the majority.

bellinisurge · 21/09/2019 08:15

Why not spend some time in that middle class elitist hub that is Liverpool. That voted Remain.

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2019 08:19

it won't stay precisely the same but we will still very easily be able to travel and work in the eu

I don't think so!
Travel yes, though it will become more expensive, Work & living difficult, retiring almost impossible.
Removal of FOM takes the UK position back to the 70s.

Exchange of skilled workers, engineers, scientists harder, so why have the hassle of going to a UK research Uni when you can go to a EU one?
This won't be lost on EU establishments, who will go all out to attract the best EU scientists in or who would have gone to the UK.

What it will do is make living and working in the EU a middle class thing again.

oh and we lose Eurasmus, so education abroad goes back to being a preserve purely of the wealthy, so the girl in the village (parents work for avg wage) will be the last generation to study in the EU.

Brexit is a surprising policy for the Tories to pursue, usually called the party of aspiration.... but only if your rich.

AuldAlliance · 21/09/2019 08:22

Brexit and Trump are just the hammers that are being used to destroy the system that is not working for everyone anymore.

Ordinary citizens are just the nails that are being hammered by Trump et al. as they strive to ensure that the system does not work for everyone, but for an ever decreasing number of people.
The fact that some of those ordinary citizens believe they are wielding Brexit, Trump, etc., as a hammer to destroy the system and, presumably, rebuild it so that it works for everyone, is a sign of how cleverly they are being manipulated.

jasjas1973 · 21/09/2019 08:29

"They are not struggling to reconcile themselves to Brexit, they are struggling to reconcile themselves to the idea of equality - the idea that all people are of equal value and should have an equal say in how and by whom they are governed. To understand the Brexit debate, you have to understand that it is is a proxy war between elitists and egalitarians."

Very true, the 2016 EU referendum was the first time the poor and dispossessed have ever had the chance to change who and how we are governed......

If you want a system that works for everyone, then its strange you want to leave the EU, because it is european countries that in the main have lower levels of inequality than the UK.

Songsofexperience · 21/09/2019 08:32

To understand the Brexit debate, you have to understand that it is is a proxy war between elitists and egalitarians.

Is the elite to you someone in the 30k to 100k pa bracket or some with millions or even billions in the bank? Because they're the ones pulling the brexit strings.

DustyDiamond · 21/09/2019 08:51

And they believe it because it was written by a self-proclaimed 'Middle class, private school, metropolitan liberal, lawyer, big house etc

This is exactly the type of condescension that drips from so many remainers towards leavers.

I couldn't give a fuck who wrote it, what job they claim to do, what school they claim to have gone to, what class they claim to be, etc

It struck a chord with me because it rings true and reflects my own experience and observations. That is all.

Do you really believe that WC people are so thick as to be eagerly drinking up the missives of others who are, or claim to be MC, with blind gratitude that they are so benevolent as to share their thoughts with us poor inadequates - just because we are in awe of them?

Ffs.

ContinuityError · 21/09/2019 08:52

'Middle class, private school, metropolitan liberal, lawyer, big house etc.'

I find it hard to believe that @IBrexiter is a lawyer, given that the current pinned tweet has a basic error of comprehension lie in it Grin

MockersthefeMANist · 21/09/2019 09:19

...as opposed to Middle-class, private school, city trader, big houses, big German car, kids with German passports leader of the Brexit Party?

MysteryTripAgain · 21/09/2019 09:34

as opposed to Middle-class, private school, city trader, big houses, big German car, kids with German passports leader of the Brexit Party

Pointless comment. The world of politics is littered with NIMBYism

Tony Blair was classic.

Septembersunrays · 21/09/2019 09:47

Parker I have family from and living all over world and eu.

It's simply not an issue having to forfill requirements.
I think it's a sensible way of filtering who comes to live in your country. It was possible for my family well before eu and will be possible again.
Why are you so afraid of simple checks?
Unless your a people trafficker or gun runner what on earth is the issue?

Something has gone very wrong in education.

Septembersunrays · 21/09/2019 09:50

Songs absolutely.

Bildeberg seems to be agaisnt brexit, goodness knows what fingers in what pies, we know corruption, contracts, back handers run deep in the eu.. It's one almighty fat gravey train.
