Arthur Scargill on the state of Parliament and the Labour Party.

β€œevery single MP who wants us to go back into Europe should be opposed".

morningstaronline.co.uk/article/arthur-scargill-says-left-should-oppose-all-pro-remain-mps

β€œA Corbyn government inside the EU is toothless. We couldn’t end privatisation in the NHS or outsourcing, or renationalise railways and utilities.

β€œIt’s time for people who care about the labour movement in this country to stand up and say that we need to get out of the EU and enact socialist policies.”

yellowallpaper · 14/09/2019 11:53

I'm a lukewarm brexiteer, only because it was a democratic vote and I am outraged at the shenanigans of the Remainers to overthrow this democratic vote. It really stinks of condescending elitism, and that's my only gripe. My only issue ever with the EU has been the ridiculous situation of paying in more than we get out and EU profligacy with said money. Seems just silly. No problem with FoM and free trading, so a Norway plus sounds a good compromise to me. I didn't actually vote Blush because I am in the fence too much.

yellowallpaper · 14/09/2019 11:55

Sure,y it would be easier to rewrite our benefit rules and residency rules (I would be happy to have a ID card) than to leave the eu without a deal? Far more bureaucracy there?

ContinuityError · 14/09/2019 12:02

We couldn’t end privatisation in the NHS or outsourcing, or renationalise railways and utilities.

EU rules do not prevent nationalisation and explicitly allow for public ownership in the rail industry and other areas of the economy, such as utilities.

Septembersunrays · 14/09/2019 12:02

Yellow I don't trust UK to be able to come up with proper mechanisms for all the that.
We seem to leak everywhere, bleeding money out in so many ways.

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 12:07

My only issue ever with the EU has been the ridiculous situation of paying in more than we get out and EU profligacy with said money.

But with any club you don’t expect your subs to be reimbursed in full, you get the advantages of being in that club, which in this case are often financial in nature eg, frictionless trade

We will lose many times more than the cost of our membership by losing frictionless trade

Septembersunrays · 14/09/2019 13:10

But we also expect that club to robustly fight against corruption, we expect board transparency and we expect that club to keep other members in line and over all run a clean house.

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 13:22

And can you cite any examples where that hasn’t been the case with the EU and it’s affected us?

And, more importantly, how our own government and parliament is any better?

Songsofexperience · 14/09/2019 13:32

howabout

If you look at Scandinavian countries like Sweden for instance, Corbyn's policies wouldn't be out of place there and they're full members of the EU. Unions are represented at the boards of major companies for example.
The NHS is not being privatised because of EU rules. It's weird to imply that.
Scargyll completely misrepresents the EU here.

Septembersunrays · 14/09/2019 14:11

Bear, sadly, as we should all know, human beings are no angels. We fail at many many things.
We don't do power well, weak when it comes to money etc.

Any official is open to bribary, corruption etc.

Which is why we need fewer not, more!!

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 14:12

So you can’t cite even a single example then?

Septembersunrays · 14/09/2019 14:12

I'm just doing some ironing bear.

Then I'll have a Google for you Smile

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 14:15

No need september

If your point was valid you’d be able to reel a list off without a second thought.

You’ve just proved it’s simply rhetoric.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 14/09/2019 15:23

No, let her have a google and see what she comes up with. I'm always happy to be proved wrong when it comes to the EU.

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 15:39

It’s somewhat missing the point if she Google’s it now though bercow

september was pontificating on another thread about how Remainers shouldn’t keep asking Leavers questions because they can find the info out for themselves

She now looks rather foolish as she’s proved it’s actually because Leavers don’t have any answers that run deeper than their headline slogans which are repeated endlessly

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 14/09/2019 17:10

No one has β€˜all the answers’ because we’ve never left the EU before, it’s ridiculous demanding answers from people who cannot see into the future.

So no, leavers can not answer all your questions.
So what?

bellinisurge · 14/09/2019 17:46

But if people fail to answer any questions, it's rather difficult to see what their position is beyond "feelings ".

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 17:48

So no, leavers can not answer all your questions. So what?

But we’re not talking about what’s going to happen in the future, we’re talking about someone’s opinion of the EU currently and what that’s based on

Surely that should be possible to answer?

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 14/09/2019 17:57

@bear

Are you just making things up.
Or if not are you office based.
Is this your job.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 14/09/2019 18:06

bellinisurge Bearbehind
Why do you devote so much of your time trying to get answers out of random strangers?

Have you got nothing better to do?
A partner to chat with? Kids to talk to? RL friends?
You two have been on this brexit board for years asking the same questions.
Don’t you ever get board of it?
( obviously not )

bellinisurge · 14/09/2019 18:15

Bear and I are too busy rowing about solutions to this mess to have livesπŸ˜‚
Hope you ask the same silly question to Clav, Mystery, Mummy, Copper and whatever the latest incarnation is of our Far Eastern regular.

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 18:29

*Are you just making things up.g
Or if not are you office based.
Is this your job.

Literally no idea what you’re talking about

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 18:34

Why do you devote so much of your time trying to get answers out of random strangers?

I’ve giving up actively asking for answers, ie, me posing the questions initially, but I will challenge comments by posters such as september

She said the EU was corrupt etc etc but literally cannot cite a single actual example

There’s discussion on another thread in a similar vein.

I respect your position, whatever it is, but only if you can defend it. Only if you can actually support the points you make.

If you have no idea what you’re talking about then how is anyone supposed to respect that

Bearbehind · 14/09/2019 18:35

Walkingdeadfangirl · 14/09/2019 18:36

Bearbehind: "It is frustrating that people like walking still don’t understand the WTO requirements relating to borders"

I am not sure what you think I dont understand? If their was no hard border between Ireland/UK the WTO would have no problem with that unless a member state complained. If a member did complain the border would still remain open throughout the process until several years later a decision was made. In that time we could have the 'alternative arrangements' up and running.

But if this were to happen the UK could just apply for a national security waiver which it is very likely to get because of the very specific security situation in N.Ireland.

So who is it that is going to force someone to erect a hard border?
