Indeed Parker , however with a new PM and the possibility of a GE looming, if the EU countries granted an extension and the PM went into negotiations without the red lines of the previous PM , then I think a slightly different WA could be the outcome. Saying you don't like one bit YOU actually negotiated to be in the WA and have now decided you want it removing or changing, I can understand why Barnier has said no more negotiating the current WA !

lljkk · 01/09/2019 10:20

People don't understand what "the backstop" is. It's not any specific picture about who is in the customs union or trusted traders or MaxFac, etc.

The backstop is the principle that there must be specific descriptions of how the Irish border will continue to be invisible. In effect at all times. This is what the UK struggles with. Instead of backstop Uk wants to be held merely to its word that the border will continue to be invisible. This promise is empty air because it has zero specifics exactly how that will be achieved.

No specifics = "Good Chap" contract.
BJ just blew up the UK's crediblity at being a "Good Chap" by putting the Queen in a political position (violating unwritten rules) and proroguing Parliament. BJ showed he's not a Good Chap.

By rejecting "the backstop" the UK is effectively rejecting GFA. :(

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 11:09

Do you think in a century the wording of the GFA will be exactly the same?

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 12:22

@mummmy2017 it may well change or develop organically. Not on the back of a fag packet in five minutes because some UK numpties have had a tantrum.
Why don't you learn a bit about the Troubles and then come back and post. How old are you?

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 12:26

Over 50.
I suppose I had hoped the lack of violence for so long would mean people turn their back on it returning and prefer to use words instead to find a way forward.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 12:39

And so you test that by pulling the rug out from under it?

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 12:46

Chewing a wasp over people not being nice to each other doesn't remove No Dealers responsibility for creating a situation where violence thrives.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 14:15

Take a look on this thread @mummmy2017 . And see if your increasingly pathetic "why can't people do what I want " actually means anything

Any Northern Ireland peeps want to tell me are you worried as I Am. http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm2016/3677420-any-northern-ireland-peeps-want-to-tell-me-are-you-worried-as-i-am

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 14:54

So what your implying is that everyone in England can never leave the EU due to Ireland . Or by modifying the GFA can this happen.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 15:05

No. And you darned well know it. As I have said until I am blue in the face - make NI a special economic zone (Johnson has already been talking about Freeports) and put a border in the sea. And then we leave. Or something else that doesn't fuck with GFA.
No one on mainland UK gives a shit about NI or the DUP. That is just an ERG scam. The tories would drop the DUP like a stone if it wasn't for the confidence and supply deal which means nothing given that at least one Tory has said they would vote against the Govt on No Deal. So the majority of 1 that the Tories get with the DUP means fuck all.

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 15:10

But in putting the sea border in you are forcing part of the UK to trade differently...
And the border was not acceptable to the DUP or many MPs
Also I want freedom from the EU...
Not to be tied into it for ever with less than we have.
The GFA can be modified, if people want to..

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 15:16

Part of tbe UK when it suits you. Given that you obviously didn't think about NI when you voted it's a bit rich now to speak about it like it's Surrey.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 15:17

Do you know how long it took to get GFA? Are you utterly ignorant about what happened in NI (and mainland UK) before hand?

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 15:21

For three years Ireland has know this could happen, there is your time to plan.
The fact it was not blasted at us from every media outlet before the vote means what?

cherin · 01/09/2019 15:24

That people didn’t even have a sketch of a plan

cherin · 01/09/2019 15:26

That was an easy joke, sorry, it was too good to pass it

Anyway
It was blasted
Before the referendum
Only you were blindsided by the 350m on the bus, and the ranting about unelected members of the EU (the loudest of the ranters is AFAIK elected and paid by the EU and is planning to retire with a golden pension thanks to you)

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 15:41

It was clear to me and loads of other people that GFA was an issue. But people like you didn't give a shit and continue not to.

Bearbehind · 01/09/2019 15:54

As I have said until I am blue in the face - make NI a special economic zone (Johnson has already been talking about Freeports) and put a border in the sea.

And as many of the rest of us have also said until we are blue in the face, that is not the answer.

Leaving the EU was not supposed to break up the UK.

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 16:27

The NI issue was not blasted.
But that still does not mean thet outweigh the rest of the people who voted.
Agreements are not set in stone , they can be changed. But you don't admit that do you.

DustyDiamond · 01/09/2019 16:40

Leaving the EU was not supposed to break up the UK.

Having a border in the sea with NI as a separate economic area doesn't 'break up the UK' in and of itself.
Reunification of Ireland may or may not happen anyway in the future regardless of Brexit.

If NI & Ireland choose to reunify as one, if Scotland chooses independence, or if Wales decides to ultimately go it alone then so be it.

I'd rather that the UK did not break up but if the citizens of those countries choose to become independent then that is their business alone, not England's.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 16:48

Bearbehind , I don't give a shit what we do as long as we leave with an orderly Brexit. I don't care what fudge is fine, what it is called, what it looks like, as long as it protects GFA.

As for "it was not blasted ". Only if you weren't paying attention. Only if you were too busy getting off on the idea of it being the easiest thing to do. Check the date of this news story and ask yourself why two exPMs would turn up somewhere together if it wasn't important.

The Brexit Arms
bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 16:50

If all parties agree to change GFA, that's fine. But not to satisfy the whim of some clueless numpties.

ListeningQuietly · 01/09/2019 16:52

The options from here are :
Revoke ---- and all the cries of "Brexit would have been fine if you'd let it happen"
Pass the WA with the border in the Irish sea ---- means dumping the DUP but might save the Union with Scotland
No Deal --- which was stupidly suggested by TM but rejected by everybody who understands the implications, and would leave the UK more isolated than its been since the English Channel flooded

rock and a hard place springs to mind

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 16:54

This "intrinsic " part of the UK doesn't have the same basic civil rights that you and I have. I doubt you know or care about this.

Bearbehind · 01/09/2019 16:57

That’s not the only options listening

I fully expect BJ to bluster his way through saying the WA has changed even if only a comma has changed

A sea border will lose them too many votes in future
