Johnson likes publicity.

Any attention is good attention. Whilst you are talking about how crazy his idea is, the less you come up with your own.

And there it is. The lack of plan to stop no deal. Just a bunch of idiots who argue over who is more right about politics without offering up a practical solution.

Unable to see their own flaws.

And leading us ever closer to the cliff edge and operation Yellowhammer.

Terryfying.

Either that, or he changed supplier of cocaine and this new one has some extra-potent stuff....

Violetparis · 22/08/2019 07:41

I went on twitter to look at Trump's tweets to see what the fuss was about and I actually checked to see if I was on a parady account by mistake.

Hazardtired · 22/08/2019 07:41

What's the motivation behind johnson's 30 days - is it to put off potential Tory rebels for a month? Something to save face with while meeting other leaders so conversations aren't awkward? It's a silly pledge, they've had 3 years, 30 days won't make any difference except to try and sway opinion about himself.

There wasn't any motivation. He was led into a trap by Merkel and responded carelessly.

cherin · 22/08/2019 08:06

Agreed! But does it mean that his plan to blame the EU for a hard crash (and a hard border) is defused? Will he take responsibility now? Will that focus enough to get anything done?

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 08:08

Bit confused; didn't we suspect BJ would try to leave early? And her setting the timetable enables this...

I'm clearly missing something.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/08/2019 08:10

I'm not even supposed at the BBC misrepresenting Merkel. It was clear that she was didn't believe it could be done in thirty days given it couldn't be done in two years.

Hazardtired · 22/08/2019 08:23

I read it differently... (is there different translations to what Merkel said?) She never challenged him and the fact it's been taken in the press as if she has, or that's she laid a trap which he walked into backs up the see EU is nasty narrative.

If one is able to solve this conundrum, if one finds this solution, we said we would probably find it in the next two years to come but we can also maybe find it in the next 30 days to come...

Speculative...maybe a solution can be found in x amount of time or x amount of time. Maybe.

....You have set a very blistering timetable of 30 days - if I understood you correctly, I am more than happy with that....

She bloody didn't and he knows she didn't. If this blistering time frame is failed to be met then he's already told us it's her fault because she set the challenge supposedly and he's already said it's blistering - ie painful i.e. she's a nasty woman

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 08:32

And 31 October isn't blistering? We were asked back in March not to waste time.

Where ⁦*@BorisJohnson*⁩ is warned by US Congress against a “no deal” #brexit that would dilute Good Friday Agreement - and make any US-U.K. trade deal “very unlikely”. static.rasset.ie/documents/news/2019/08/pm-johnson-brexit-letter.pdf

That feeling when you realise Greenland was a big daft distraction

@anders_aslund
At this time, Denmark is standing up alone against Russia over Nord Stream 2, which the US has failed to sanction. Trump should have gone to Denmark to grant US support. Instead he demands Danish territory & recommends that Russia is readmitted to the G-7. Trump = Putin's puppet.

(Nord Stream 2 is gas pipeline)

There's method in the madness.

prettybird · 22/08/2019 08:41

Hazard - that's also how I interpreted what she said. I'm Confused - but not surprised Sad - at the way the UK MSM has mis interpreted what she said Hmm

To use a good Scottish expression, she effectively said, "Gaun' yersel', knock yersel' oot" Grin ("Go on, have a good go trying" Wink)

SwedishEdith · 22/08/2019 08:50

The interpretation from those who understand German is that 30 days should be enough if you go for (as it's what you really want) a soft Brexit. She's left the door open for him to change.

DGRossetti · 22/08/2019 09:01

I found myself pondering earlier, on the irony that in 2019, it's Germany that is standing up for a smaller country against a bullying fascist regime ... almost a reversed metaphor for 1939, when it was Britain that was standing up for Poland - after selling Czechoslovakia down the river, that is.

Be curious to know how the Czechs feel about Brexit (and I am aware it's a dated concept now) ?

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 09:02

Same as Hazard, I took it as BoZo being able to use this to his advantage. He made a point of highlighting it; never a good sign.

I knew Greenland was a distraction but not for what. Makes sense now.

woman19 · 22/08/2019 09:03

ie painful i.e. she's a nasty woman
He called her 'Angela'. Rude, and a misogynistic 'tell' that he was flustered.
She's so good at this. 'Warum nicht.' 'Why not?' at the end of her 30 day phrase, sounded so gentle and unthreatening.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 09:05

My only Czech friend rarely goes on fb or I would ask her. I'm also sure fb is going to realise that too much politics on it's site is bad for business (re yr previous post) and posted about it a few threads ago; it's a bit of a graveyard until summer holiday pics come on.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 09:09

Have also noticed BoZo is donning the pounds again now he's won the prize. Wonder if Trump will like him less now Hmm? Can only imagine how BoZo standing with Germany in G7 has made the orange buffoon feel.

StripeyChina · 22/08/2019 09:10

Yes, I felt that too yesterday, when reading about Carrie not being allowed into the US, an article described her situation as 'the lover of Boris Johnson, (who is still married to the mother of his four children) who lives with him in Downing Street'.
I am not one to judge a persons private affairs normally but I honestly thought, what IS this sleazeball doing as our PM?
( I dont have much time for her either, but she is inconsequential)

And then I was trying to explain the Trump chucking his toys out of his pram tweets re Greenland to my two kids with ASD. They simply couldn't get it. 'How can he try to buy a Country, especially when it's not for sale?' / 'why is he not now going to see the Danish PM lady?'
In the end, my 14 year old told my 12 year old: 'because there is something wrong with his head. not like ours, but worse'
I got quite choked up. Gave them my standard lecture that there is nothing 'wrong' with them. And then told him he was right about Trump, but even if its a MH issue rather than a 'personality' one, he's dangerous, because he is NOT inconsequential.

It's a mad mad world atm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/08/2019 09:11

I think we are agreeing in what Merkel meant, but I'm putting it very clumsily.

woman19 · 22/08/2019 09:16

Die Welt journalist on Sky has just pointed out that his "Wir Schaffen Das" was a sinister troll from him alluding to a phrase used in the refugee crisis.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wir_schaffen_das

She said it was a very awkward moment. I wondered at the silence when he said it.

She also pointed out the the loudness of the 'StopBrexit' shouts, seen across the world. This seems to have been removed from the disingenous wangland press.

TatianaLarina · 22/08/2019 09:17

Speculative...maybe a solution can be found in x amount of time or x amount of time. Maybe.

Even more speculative than that translation imo.

“Aber man kann sie vielleicht ja auch in den nächsten 30 Tagen finden. Warum nicht? Dann sind wir ein ganzes Stück weiter”

Maybe we can find them [solutions] in the next 30 days. Why not? Then we are a long way further/ ahead.

DGRossetti · 22/08/2019 09:31

Even as a non-German speaker, I think I can hear what Merkel was saying ... it's a very European way of talking - certainly the sort of phrasing I'd hear in conversations between DF and other Italians.

There may be no practical reason to learn other languages in England anymore. But by relegating them to the lowest of the low in schools, our children have lost out on an entire universe of communication. Leading to the too-ironic-to-describe situation that it's the children of immigrants - juggling two or more languages - that end up doing better in schools than their monolingual "English" contemporaries.

That said, the UK press was always going to mangle the message to it's own end.

Frankiestein402 · 22/08/2019 09:35

was a sinister troll
Unlikely to be deliberate? - he's insensitive rather than subtle - this is the guy who recited Kipling in Mandalay as HMG representative. Sort of trying to present himself as learned, he's recognised a context and dragged something out of his memory without further thought.
