Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Well, if Swinson won't work with the SNP, hopefully they will do us a favour and get rid of her again at the next GE

There’s nothing to be gained by partnering with the SNP in Scotland... the Tories will be wiped out there either way. Indeed, partnering could
be counterproductive as some Remain voters may feel even more strongly about remaining in the UK!..... and vote Tory in a seat the LDs have stood down from in the absence of other options.

Oakenbeach · 15/08/2019 21:15

Chris Leslie tells me the five Change MPs might not vote against the govt in September

They “might” not.... i think til much is being read into these and JS’s comments. Politics isn’t one-dimensional and each side will be exercising leverage and not just bowing immediately down in front of JC and meekly to his demand.

It’s whether they ultimately vote to block no-deal that’s the key. When judgment day comes, if they won’t for petty party or personal reasons, they will rightly not be forgiven.

MockerstheFeManist · 15/08/2019 21:25

I have no illusions about Ken Clarke at Health and Education. I remember some nurses on a picket line describing to me the enema they were going to give him if he ever fell into their clutches. Not the point.

The GNU (how do you do, Govt of National Unity) would be a very short-term arrangement to get a short extension so that an election/referendum can be held before we crash out with no deal. The caretaker PM would go as soon as that was done and then we can vote on the govt we want to impliment the May Deal, slightly modified, go for No Deal with a madate, or come crawling back and ask where they've been keeping our rebate, etc.

Whatever the outcome, let it be one we voted for.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 21:29

They just needed to say they will look at the proposal, being so dismissive straight away is not a good look when your selling point to voters is as a party of Remain.

prettybird · 15/08/2019 21:44

Swinson may also have a personal reason to particularly dislike the SNP over and above her pro-Union sentiments as she lost her seat to the SNP in 2015. She won it back in 2017 but I know for a fact that she has constituents who tell her to her face that they will no longer vote for her as they had done in the past and now exclusively vote SNP my dad Wink and his neighbours Wink - this despite the fact that the SNP MP was very ineffective and full of himself

Mistigri · 15/08/2019 22:18

Corbyn is leader of the biggest opposition party. He may not be adored in HOC, but constitutionally and politically, he has the prerogative to form a temp gov following a VONC?

Only if he can command the confidence of the HoC.

Personally, I'd much rather a temporary Corbyn govt rather than no deal. But whether or not enough Tories would vote for this is another question. Hence the suggestions of senior centre right/centre left figures near the end of their political career.

I would add that this insistance on political purity by people on the left will never cease to astonish me ... it's the remainer left's version of the Brexit unicorn.

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 22:27

Corbyn has the prerogative but does he have the support?

I don’t give a bugger about political purity at this point, I’d have Blair as a temp PM if he could deliver extension + referendum/GE etc (not that he could).

I just don’t think Harman or Clarke are likely to garner sufficient support.

Love to be proved wrong.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 22:32

It's people harking back to the past who are going to cause problems. Saying you can't have somebody because of an awful policy in the past is ridiculous. They'll never agree on anyone if they don't just deal with the issue in hand.

And, actually, the Mother and Father of the HoC usually do garner a fair amount of respect due to their position, regardless of party politics. It's a good shout for a TEMPORARY arrangement to stop no deal.

Everyone with silly objections due to political point scoring needs to get over themselves and sharpish, IMO.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 22:35

Going back to the hair on fire comparison:
some people are still arguing about the logo on the fire extinguisher

Deal with the emergency first,
then change the logo if you want

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 22:38

We're not discussing a coalition until May 2022,
just a short interim C & S to stop No Deal
and then to work out how to resolve Brexit

As soon as that has been done, then party politics could resume

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 22:42

The lack of pragmatism in a time of national emergency / constitutional crisis is astounding. Grow the fuck up, people.

The optics of that would look awful just the neoliberals keeping themselves in power out of fear of socialism for the poor I honestly think its going to have to be Corbyn and I honestly see him as doing what he said on the box, if anything part of the criticism he gets is because hes stuck to his guns on somethings since the 70's and ultimately he wants a GE to prove he has a mandate to be PM so get the extension and then call the GE, but if Johnson has lost a VONC does that mean the Tories have to change leader or will it be Johnson that takes them into the GE, hopefully either Red or BCF might know

woodpigeons · 15/08/2019 22:47

Fluffy and all others I totally agree.
We just have no time left for political point scoring and I only hope that they will come to realise this.
DH has just been the recipient of another of my rants and has gone to bed.
I wrote to the Lib Dems pointing out that as a member I will no longer be able to vote for them if they cock this up (more politely than that but that was the gist of it).
I have no confidence that it will make the slightest bit of difference but it made me feel better for a short time.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 22:47

You're one of the ones who needs to stop fangirling Corbyn and realise he's NOT the man for the job. Pragmatism, if you're capable of it.

And no. The parliament VoNC is about PM. The Tory leader is separate to this. You can resign as PM but remain as party leader. Whether they want you to is a separate issue. Or that's my take.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 22:49

Woodpigeons, I told Jo Swinson I'd never vote LD again if they fuck this up (again, more politely!). I also said that if they let no deal happen because of political posturing they'd be harmed by it even worse than the coalition harmed them.

For all those who say there is no mandate for no deal, no mandate for a Boris Johnson premiership, there is certainly no mandate for Ken Clarke or Harriet Harmen to be PM however much you want it.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 23:01

Or JC. Or anyone other than TM (by the skin of her teeth with the DUP assisting), if you're going down that road.

I just want this shit show sorted with pathetic party politic arguments getting in the way and fucking it up. Everybody who can't just see that this is what needs to happen is a part of the problem, not the solution. There's so much childishness around politics. It's pathetic.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 23:04

And there ISN'T a mandate for no deal. The leave literature and campaign said we wouldn't leave without a deal. Nobody - despite the bullshit being spouted now - voted to leave without a deal. Unless they were Mystic fucking Meg.

I wonder what Uri Geller is up to these days?!

woman19 · 15/08/2019 23:06

Tory Rebels prepared to work with Corbyn

There are more grass roots pro EUers working cross party, than there have probably ever been for any political situation in this country in generations.

The paid politicians will have to accommodate that. And they know it.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 23:07

I'm just fed up with the lack of a plan, hypocrisy and nonsense from both sides.

Hazardtired · 15/08/2019 23:13

Oh god i forgot Uri getting involved like it was some weird dream. Has he abandoned us? We need a new letter!

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/08/2019 23:25

The only way this is going to work is for people to put aside their party, their politics and their ego and put the country at the very front of everything but can this happen? We have 77 days to find out.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 15/08/2019 23:33

Only by some on MN would wanting a better life for those on the lower rungs of society would be thought of as fangirling LMFAO Grin
