Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

The intruiging prospect of Father of the House Ken Clarke becoming Prime Minster for fifteen minutes grows more and more attractive by the day.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2019 18:12

I wanted Clarke to win in 2005, but his pro-EU stance even then put him 5th
So Bullindon Boy #1 got in then

#2 is so much worse
I do hope there isn't a #3 lined up for when BJ exits, whistling

Cavalry versus Machine gun

I am back into prepping mode, as we have now been on our summer holiday. DH seems considerably more interested now that a No Deal scenario seems very likely. Am also growing a few edibles in pots in my backyard. And foraging (mainly for jam ingredients).

Still struggling to believe we have that buffoon as PM. It seems more like something out of a dark political comedy.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2019 18:17

"C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre"

Sadly not magnificent, just very stupid

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 18:17

I suspect BJ, Cummings, Raab et all would all shit themsleves at the sound of cannon

They would never be in that situation. They are the generals. Johnson has literally said 'Do or Die' over Brexit.

Charge of the Light Brigade is all about the Generals who blundered - and were, like the Queen has reflected on, dreadful in their ability to govern - but filled their men with this patriotism that led them to their deaths.

Patriotism being 'the last refuge of a scoundrel'.

IMO all those who advocated Brexit then transferred their money/business HQs overseas post referendum should have those assets seized to help pay for the forthcoming shitstorm. They're ripping our country apart to enrich themselves.

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Heaven help us.

Of course the law is silent on the issue of the PM resigning
- because it’s rule number 1 of the British constitution.

If the PM loses the confidence of the House (the thing which makes them PM) and someone else can command it,
they must resign in their favour.

That is how Boris Johnson became PM in the first place.
Because Theresa May no longer enjoyed the House’s confidence and he-nominally- did.

If it is clear- and it’s a huge huge if- that someone else, Corbyn who whoever could command the House under the proper operation of our constitution Johnson ought to resign.
It’s that simple.

If he refuses to do so he will be placing the Queen in an intolerable position.

Which is rule number two- don’t bring the crown into politics.

Please don’t let anyone tell you this is a grey area- it really isn’t.

It may be individual politicians choose to break precedent and bend the constitution to suit their purposes
but what ought_ to happen is perfectly clear_

placemats · 11/08/2019 19:01

The 1 Euro jar??

Ouch! Grin

Peregrina · 11/08/2019 19:47

Refuse to use the new 50p coin with a slogan worthy of the Communist bloc? I think I would probably put them in the charity box. At least let someone get the benefit.

PMK! Thanks Red.
Managed to get some internet and had to share a Holiday Brexit Moment. On top of the open top bus in York and going past the Rowntree factory. Audio guide explains that now the Chocolate Orange is Made In Europe. Jubilant 50's male in front seat grunts and turns to the desk shouting out "Not after Brexit! Haw haw haw!" he didn't get a reply but clocked my raised eyebrow.
I know we aren't supposed to even suggest they aren't bright, but sometimes...

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2019 20:13

That's brilliant wih the parsnips, fluffy
I adore roast parsnips with beef or lamb

bellinisurge · 11/08/2019 20:17

@LonelyTiredandLow , I'm in Wales on holiday. The fab cat is not mine. Everywhere we go there are "funded by the EU" signs showing investment in tourist luring infrastructure. It's so fucking sad because Westminster will not match it. I hope that the funding for some of the "in progress" construction I have seen is already in the bank and non-returnable.

bellinisurge · 11/08/2019 20:17

Awesome parsnips, by the way.
