Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

C&S is working well in ROI now. But everyone there is on the same page. Probably more like a Gov of National Unity in the face of a barrage of insults from the REAL PM Cummings!

Not a peep from NI either. WOW

What the heck is going on.

Well I suppose why interrupt your opponent if they are talking and acting through their earholes. Let them at it.

woman19 · 15/08/2019 19:40

Good news that Swinson has agreed to meet Corbyn.

I've met too many nice Lib Dems, SNP, Tories and Labour folks on this journey over the last 3 years to want to get stuck in boring partisan grumbles.

Outsomnia · 15/08/2019 19:46

Someone has to make a decision here to try to block the NO DEAL madness.

I don't care who it is or what alliance now, or on what terms anymore.

The fight back needs to happen. UK is a last minute entity isn't it, but better late than never.

Does anyone think it will work to stop No Deal Brexit? I think the tide is turning now, but who knows what forces are out there to stop it anymore.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 19:47

The Lib Dems have also ruled out working with the SNP in a Remain Alliance so not sure how close Jo Swinson could work with Nicola Sturgeon.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 19:55

What's up with the Swinson ? Confused

Wanted a women-only Cabinet
Won't work with Corbyn
Now the SNP

She's got 15 MPs out of 650
and while she's posturing and making an even bigger fool of herself, the clock is ticking down to No Deal

QueenOfThorns · 15/08/2019 20:00

@woman19 why would Ken Clarke and/or Harriet Harman as temporary PMs ‘look appalling’? Wouldn’t that be just the sort of cross-party leadership that might actually succeed?

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:01

I know, that’s why I said ‘personally’.

As a Scottish MP she’s not a fan of the SNP afaict.

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:02

To VioletParis ^^

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:02

Wanted a women-only Cabinet

A white women only cabinet to boot.

AutumnCrow · 15/08/2019 20:04

I was actually embarrassed by Swinson today listening to her intonation and content while being interviewed.,

But far far less embarrassing than Johnson, Patel et al. As for Grant Shapps - what's he on?

I'm kind of hoping that Sir Keir is waiting in the wings as the Compromise Candidate.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 20:04

A Remain Alliance at the next GE only makes sense if No Deal has not happened

However, just in case the GE happens first, the Remain parties do need to have their Alliance fully mapped out in advance,
to get enough MPs to stop No Deal

it would be very difficult to negotiate on who has what seat during a GE campaign, in enough time for the selected candidates to meet the deadline.

Remain's problem throughout has been faffing around, while the Brexiters plough on regardless of anything else
If we get No Deal, there will be a lot of recriminations about this faffing.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 20:06

TatianaLarina have re-read your post and see what you mean.

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:07

I don’t think it needs to be an alliance at this point, I just think they should coordinate their approach to No Deal. But I agree a potential alliance needs to be sketched out.

There are too many Judean People’s Fronts atm.

woman19 · 15/08/2019 20:07

Queen Clarke, lovely though his taste in music is, was key in Thatcher's gov.

Harman, admirable as she has been in so many ways, was key in Blair's.

For a range of reasons (some of which I would agree with, some not) I think that would play poorly with the electorate as things now stand. MPs know this too..........

Corbyn is leader of the biggest opposition party. He may not be adored in HOC, but constitutionally and politically, he has the prerogative to form a temp gov following a VONC?

It is, what it is, and time is running out.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 20:08

Well, if Swinson won't work with the SNP, hopefully they will do us a favour and get rid of her again at the next GE

She is an embarassment to remain, who personifies the criticism of "out-of-touch" liberals - and she's not typical of most ordinary liberals, who are as down to earth as most folk.

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:09

No worries my post could have been clearer.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 20:14

I agree having Harman or Clarke as PM even if it is only temporary looks apalling. It will be called a Remainer coup which it is and there will be questions about it's legitimacy in the same way questions were raised about Boris Johnson becoming PM.

woman19 · 15/08/2019 20:14

Sarah Wollaston: Corbyn government may be 'lesser of two evils

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/15/sarah-wollaston-jeremy-corbyn-government-may-be-lesser-of-two-evils

Not the sort of language one would hope for, but mini steps......

So many parallels with the Anti Apartheid work done half a century ago, in what we are having to do now. It worked then by the most extra ordinary of collaborations. Even Jeremy Corbyn should remember that. Hopefully........

tobee · 15/08/2019 20:24

If they are mini steps there need to be many of them. And fast moving!

Hazardtired · 15/08/2019 20:28

Shock @ change uk MPs. Wft?!

People and their bloody egos.

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 20:45

I agree having Harman or Clarke as PM even if it is only temporary looks apalling

It’s odd that she doesn’t have the political antennae to deduce that. Apart from the Remain aspect - it feels like a step back to the past.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 20:48

I thought when ChangeUK started that they said they wanted a new kind of politics

Sounds like they hung onto all the old shit
Hopefully they will indeed Change soon

QueenOfThorns · 15/08/2019 21:02

@woman19 thank you, I didn’t see it that way, but it makes sense.

@TatianaLarina I don’t think that ‘a step back to the past’ would be a problem in itself. MPs in general would be less likely to see it as some kind of coup if someone near the end of their career took over temporarily, don’t you think? Rather than worrying that they might be putting someone in power who won’t go away afterwards.

Oakenbeach · 15/08/2019 21:02

Wanted a women-only Cabinet. A white women only cabinet to boot.

That was Caroline Lucas!

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 21:04

That was Caroline Lucas!

So it was! Doh!

My bad Jo.
