Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

I know it's not important what he looks like but Corbyn's sulky faced teenager head tilt photos on news apps are incredibly irritating.

Probably not acting now because of any cunning plan, but because Labour's internal polls showed the cost in lost Remainer votes of letting No Deal happen is too high

However, his proposal is the last real chance to stop No Deal, so Remainers and "soft" Leavers need to hold their noses and swallow it

I agree. BCF

UK must accept US food standards in trade deal, says farm chief

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/business-49353220

He genuinely doesn't appear to see the disjoint between

He also dismissed concerns that a deal would expose British farmers to harmful competition from much larger US farms with lower production costs.

and.....

Mr Duvall said the British public should have the right to buy cheaper US produce if they wanted to. Confused

Also, his bullish quaint confidence that if washing in chlorine were symptomatic of dangerous practices, the federal authorities wouldn't allow such practices is sickening Hmm. As he sticks his head in sand and doesn't reflect on why salmonella and other food borne infections are higher in the US .....but of course that's ok as long as it's only the poor people who suffer Darwinism in action Angry

Outsomnia · 15/08/2019 18:36

Wide of left field here, but what isn't these days.....

Johnson may be relieved if No Deal is thwarted. As long as it is not by him! Just a thought.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 18:38

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report around 380 deaths in the US each year attributed to foodborne salmonella poisoning.

The most recent epidemiological lab data from Public Health England, 2006 to 2015 shows NO deaths in England and Wales from salmonella.

The US reports an estimated 1,600 cases of food poisoning from Listeria Monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeriosis food poisoning.

In England and Wales there were 135 reported cases in 2017

Jo Swindon's response to JC attached. Slightly more measured than previous impressions have given.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 18:41

Swinson. Autocorrect be damned!

Peregrina · 15/08/2019 18:52

As a LibDem I am much happier with the more measured tone of the letter. She does have a point re the Labour rebels. I also like the idea of a PM/Deputy PM in Clarke/Harman. Just initially to get No Deal dead and buried, and then a stay of execution on Leaving, until perhaps a properly conducted Referendum is held, with some tight rules on advertising, and absolutely no place for an unofficial Arron Banks/Nigel Farage campaign.

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 19:05

Jo Swinson needs to provide more detail about a unity government if it's not led by Corbyn. Who would be in the cabinet for a start ? So fed up with vague ideas rather than concrete plans.

AutumnCrow · 15/08/2019 19:06

Swinson made a right tit of herself on the ITV evening news just now. 'I am working with Labour!' sounded like 'I am tidying my room!'

Jesus.

woman19 · 15/08/2019 19:06

Clarke and Harmon are great politicians, for a range of reasons.

Placing them as temp PMs would look appalling, for so many reasons.

It's Corbyn or nothing atm. It is what it is.

Constitutionally apart from anything else.

Swinson didn't say this when she was campaigning for leadership, did she? I liked her because I thought she had said she would reach out across the parties to stop no deal and the brexit?

Whatever, she looks like she has played her cards poorly today, I'm afraid.

Farmers going all French in their protests.

Sheep herded along Whitehall by anti-Brexit campaigners

www.indy100.com/video/politics/sheep-herded-along-whitehall-by-anti-brexit-campaigners-1eJdJWsD

A flock of sheep was herded along Whitehall by campaigners who say a no-deal Brexit could force half of UK farms out of business. Six sheep were led by People's Vote campaign group during the launch of its Farmers For A People's Vote offshoot

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 19:08

She's making a tit of herself on Channel 4 News now.

Oakenbeach · 15/08/2019 19:09

The more I think about it, If JS handles this right it could work in her favour in the end.....

Being overly keen to embrace JC’s offer would risk being seen as Labour enablers, willing to go into Coalition with them after a GE given half a chance.....

If she’s prepared to support him in the final analysis but through the grittiest of gritted teeth, then the LDs would be seen as truly putting country before party... (with the benefit that would bring to the party as a result - a win-win). She could claim that she pleaded with him to give attempts to thwart no deal the possible chance by selecting a compromise candidate.....

Then, if JC fails to win the VONC, the tables are truly turned back on him!

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 19:10

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Been going through the numbers.

Looks to me that probably numbers are just about there to defeat Johnson in a motion of no confidence.

But almost certainly not enough to replace him with Corbyn or likely anyone else.

Ergo most likely outcome election where PM chooses date.
....
Biggest problem are not so much luring Tory rebels but ironically former Labour MPs^^ 🤯
who are now independent, either because they've left the party or have been thrown out.

There are 13 - almost as big as the Lib Dems. One said to me: "they should be writing to us, not them."
......
Speaking to some of them this afternoon, the impression I've got is that most will vote against the govt on a confidence motion (though not necessarily all)
but there's fat chance of getting the rest (save Williamson/Hopkins) voting for Corbyn.
........
NEW:
numbers looking even trickier, never mind for putting Corbyn in but for a motion of confidence itself

Chris Leslie tells me the five Change MPs might not vote against the govt in September 🤯
< WTF >

Hoooo · 15/08/2019 19:11

She's made a right pig's ear of it, that's for sure.

mathanxiety · 15/08/2019 19:12

Emilyontmoor it seems everybody was guilty of wishful thinking wrt China then, including the people of HK. Water can trickle gently but it can also destroy all in its path.

AutumnCrow · 15/08/2019 19:13

Swinson is now making a tit of herself on C4 with KGM.

Oakenbeach · 15/08/2019 19:13

@NoWordForFluffy

Actually, that’s a decent letter...

mathanxiety · 15/08/2019 19:16

Mistigri the anti-Corbyn rhetoric isn't 'hysterical nonsense'.

It's a coordinated campaign to drum up a Red Scare.
'Better no deal than Red' is the equivalent of 'Better dead than Red'.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/08/2019 19:18

Chris Leslie tells me the five Change MPs might not vote against the govt in September

WTAF is this madness?! Dear god. It's fucking silly season alright.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2019 19:20

All this talk of Coalition Hmm

It should NOT be a coalition, as that would probably end badly for all the smaller parties

Just Confidence & Supply for Corbyn to request an extension

ideally for a PV, then stay in office until after the PV has finished
If not a PV, then a GE well before the new Brexit Day

Oh and Swinson has to state she will accept the result of any PV, or it is totally hypocritical for her to demand one

No C & S for non-Brexit Parliamentary business, barring emergencies

  • that would help persuade Tories & LDems worried about what else a Corbyn govt would do

If he ever tries to pass any bills they don't like, just vote them down
This is easy with C & S, but could bring down a coalition
C & S is much more suitable for parties & MPs with so much distrust

TokyoSushi · 15/08/2019 19:21

Yes I agree with you about confidence & supply BigChoc

Violetparis · 15/08/2019 19:25

Am I right to think the Change MPs include Anna Soubry ? So she would rather Boris and no deal than Corbyn for a few weeks. Shock

TatianaLarina · 15/08/2019 19:27

Being overly keen to embrace JC’s offer would risk being seen as Labour enablers, willing to go into Coalition with them after a GE given half a chance.....

I have wondered whether part of her concern is not to repeat the fuckup of the LD-Tory collaboration.

Personally I think she would have done better to take Sturgeon’s line of being open to talks even while skeptical of their success. If I were her I would work with Sturgeon to co-ordinate their approach.

woman19 · 15/08/2019 19:28

Chris Leslie tells me the five Change MPs might not vote against the govt in September^

Handbags at dawn. They are cross that JC snubbed them.

'For the want of a nail, a kingdom was lost.'

'Now so queer as folk' etc.
