Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I can make bread by hand but hand shoulder tendon repair earlier this year and it's still too much for me to do the kneading.

We woke up to the smell of fresh bread today. 😋 🍞

Had to make white bread as the first one so the kids can try it. It's wholemeal flour I need to use up though, so that's next!

NoWordForFluffy · 17/08/2019 07:07

Had, not hand. Not awake yet.

crankysaurus · 17/08/2019 07:11

Mmmm, fresh bread Smile

SpoooyGhost · 17/08/2019 07:14

I am so envious! Can't wait to hear how it tastes.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/08/2019 07:16

The bacon is cooking right now!

I took advantage of a new customer offer at Waitrose yesterday and have ordered a shedload of Brexit supplies including 10 tins of baked beans, 10 tins of tomatoes, 4 tins of rice pudding and 8 litres of UHT milk. Have also stocked up the freezer with sausages and ordered a load of cat food plus other bits and bobs I know we’ll use at some point.

When I went into Asda the other day I picked up another massive box of Bold washing powder for £10 and some child’s ibuprofen and paracetamol.

I’m going to keep an eye out for a bread maker however I’ve got a stand mixer I can make dough in which will come in handy.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/08/2019 10:08

Ex's magi mix has a dough hook. I shall try that out I suppose. I am still looking after it for him.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/08/2019 10:11

I think I will end up bringing home half the holiday food shopping. Fortunately the bit of the car boot that usually has the food in was empty on the way here so I can fill that.

Hoooo · 17/08/2019 11:06

Tip:
Buy things like cake mixes and batter mixes that just need milk or water.
Some have quite a long date on!

mamapants · 17/08/2019 13:12

Just done some more ordering with my amazon subscribe and save.
Got some cheapish ground coffee to try, 5 packs of toilet roll, baby wipes, nappies, dishwasher tablets(finish work out pretty cheap compared to supermarket offers). Think that's it. Feeling like I am doing well so far.
My scribbled list is getting quite a few ticks against things now.

mamapants · 17/08/2019 13:13

Enjoying reading what others are getting incase I've forgotten anything.

mamapants · 17/08/2019 13:20

I actually have a bag of soap nuts as well that I bought thinking I was being environmentally friendly then realised it wasnt and I haven't used them. So I really should use them as well.

Hoooo · 17/08/2019 19:33

I didn't get on with soapnuts and have gone back to powder...

mamapants · 17/08/2019 19:46

Yes very mixed views on soapnuts although maybe I need a brexit shortage to get round to using them.
Need to make some breadcrumbs for the freezer as well.
Have removed some old and useless frozen stuff thats been in there too long to make room for stuff we need.
Could do with tidying cupboards too but will have yo wait until my children are back in school.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/08/2019 19:56

Soap nuts are great for waterproof clothing.

SistemaAddict · 17/08/2019 20:13

What kind of things do you use the breadcrumbs for? I'm always thinking I should breadcrumb the crusts of the loaf and freeze them but never do Sad

I've ordered dried and tinned chick peas along with tahini, lemon juice and more garlic paste to make hummus. I've made soup today and put that in the freezer for a cold and tired don't feel like cooking day.
More beans and am giving the branston ones a try.

What kind of things do you use the breadcrumbs for?

I use them (gluten free ones!) for making 'breaded' fish fillets. Dust fish with flour first, then dip in beaten egg, then roll in breadcrumbs.

rainandshine52 · 18/08/2019 06:21

You would be better stashing medicines!

Socksontheradiator · 18/08/2019 06:31

You would be better stashing medicines!

Does it have to be one or the other?

Also, there are umpteen discussions on here about medicines.

SpoooyGhost · 18/08/2019 07:06

My first aid box is looking very healthy thank you @rainandshine52.

Although if anyone could recommend a large lockable medicine box I'd be most grateful. The one we're using is full, and I don't like medicines in the house unless they're locked up - too many curious little people.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 07:14

We just keep ours on top of the kitchen cupboard. The little people don't go up there!

SpoooyGhost · 18/08/2019 07:38

Mine are full throttle mad bastards.

mamapants · 18/08/2019 07:55

I use breadcrumbs for making chicken nuggets, veggie burgers, stuffing.
I figure I'm better off stocking up on food than medicine because I hardly ever use medicine but eat every day. Stocked up on ibuprofen and plasters and intending to get calpol and maybe I'll get some cough syrup. Some people will need more of a medical stash but that should be OK for our family.

Wolfcub · 18/08/2019 08:21

Breadcrumbs:

Breading things (you can make chicken nuggets by coating chicken in red pesto and then breadcrumbs)
Dumplings as an alternative to the suet version
Breadcrumb topping to add some crispy texture to a fish, chicken or veg “pie” (no pastry in this scenario) add herb of choice,
You can apparently make a pudding with them (apple Betty) but I haven’t tried it yet.

Interesting “project fear” articles in the papers today. Wonder if it’ll persuade anyone to build up their supplies

Wolfcub · 18/08/2019 08:51

I’ve put reminders in my phone for things like flu jab - start of October
Diesel - weekend before brexit
Bread, milk and emergency sandwich stuff in case school dinners are affected - 30th Oct
