Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

My brain has gone a bit blank as to what to replenish WITH. I think it’s because I’m pregnant so I don’t fancy most things I normally eat - obviously if push came to shove I would eat whatever, but it’s making it hard to draw up lists and plan

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 11:47

@Bellasblankexpression - it's a conundrum. I had hyperemesis and couldn't even keep water down.
Focus on tinned veg for nutrition. Or just get one extra now and then of what you currently tolerate.

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 11:55

Thanks @bellinisurge I’m figuring stores like pasta and rice topped up never hurt, and veg and fruit is a great suggestion. A lot of my tins are okay til 2020 or further, but I want to stock up on more pulses and things to flavour with - stock, pesto, tinned tomatoes etc I think.
Crackers can never hurt either.
I was so organised before but I’m looking at my original list and nothing seems appealing!

Evenstar · 25/07/2019 11:58

Feeling uncertain as to whether to restock at the moment. The maths is against him putting No Deal through Parliament even if MP’s hadn’t voted to prevent suspending Parliament to force a No Deal. I think a General Election could be more likely. So hard to know if it is necessary at this stage.

SistemaAddict · 25/07/2019 12:15

Regardless of brexit I'm grateful to the posters who suggested getting extra supplies in. It helped me through the snow and periods of illness. I've learnt new re ours and how to successfully make bread.
Waitrose delivery today. I've ordered extra butter to replace the one on the freezer and a big packet of spaghetti and a few bits for my mum's stash. I'll be adding a few bits each week again to spread the cost.

@Evenstar, we never know what is around the corner, and while I will never be a hoarder, I have learnt how much simpler life is when there is what my mum calls a well stocked pantry.
Brexit or not, i intend to keep a good supply of bits and pieces that I know will be used in the house from here on in.
Somebody posted on aibu about not having money for sanpro yesterday. There was criticism of posters who suggested always keeping a stock, as it implied having the privilege of being able to do so. But i do believe that whatever a person's financial situation, it is worth doing what is necessary to try to build a buffer (I have been in a similar situation though not quite that desperate, and I wish I had done something proactive at the time)

Evenstar · 25/07/2019 12:47

@Socksontheradiator we always keep plenty in and can afford to re-stock the stash, but just unsure how necessary it will be to have it at the moment. I think maybe I will add just one or two items a week back to what is left.

Socksontheradiator · 25/07/2019 12:56

Sorry wasn't suggesting you can't afford to restock, was just offering my reasons for keeping a bit of a stash.
It's interesting, one person's stockpile is another person's normal state of affairs, from what I read online.
🤔😊

TheFlis12345 · 25/07/2019 13:06

I have hardly touched mine as most of it has dates well into next year. I have rotated a few things when we have done a shop to make sure the oldest is being used first. I did an audit on Friday and only a couple of things (flour and billtong) were near their best before so they have been moved into the kitchen cupboards and will be replaced when I do my next food shop.

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 14:17

I've decided, on balance, to restock.

One thing I learned from our 'practice run' back on March however was that, other than OH, no-one else in my wider circle of family and friends bothered to do anything. The levels of apathy, delusion and entitlement ('we'll just get stuff from you, lol') made me feel pretty pissed off.

Even Boris Johnson is talking about some 'disruption' and pumping in £39 billion to help mitigate this.

AIBU to toughen up and make it clear they need to sort themselves out?

(They tend to be the types who also eat into my time with getting me to fill in forms, help with appeals (because they fucked up the original thing through lack of attention to detail) and believe utter bollocks on Facebook and You Tube.)

God I'm pissed off today.

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 15:20

It's hot @AutumnCrow , everyone is pissed off. Hope you feel better soon.
Which reminds me to have supplies of Wineand Gin.

mrslaughan · 25/07/2019 15:33

Ours is depleted - starting again......

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 15:48

@bellinisurge Wine

Chin chin. Possibly multiple chins Grin

Lessons learned from the trial run: tinned mushrooms from Lidl are fine for stir fries; my DS (20) is like a locust on chocolate biscuits; we prefer dry noodles and tinned potatoes to gnocchi, and they last longer in terms of BB dates. We are clearly uncouth.

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 15:55

My dd discovered my stash of cheapo chicken "flavour " noodles. It's kind of a prepper in joke to have them.
Now every meal has to have themGrin

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 16:08

Asda 22p noodles? They're the business. You only really need to add a few glugs of boiling water to them and they're done in a few minutes. I've started putting them in the food bank trolley too.trolley

I fry them up with my own courgettes (of which I have a glut), chillies (ditto), and other stuff lying about and soy sauce.

Spudlet · 25/07/2019 16:15

Ours isn’t too bad but it needs a bit of replenishing here and there. We ate a bit of it when we were unwell, a bit more when we’ve been trying to save money, and when we just wanted some chocolate, obvs Blush So it needs some tlc.

When the weather cools down I want to audit and then I’m going to make myself a little function so I’ll get an email when things get close to their use by dates (I make this sound simple but it will take me hours and will probably involve DH as well...). Want to get a second water butt for the garden and some seeds for next year.

It’s all most dispiriting Sad

SistemaAddict · 25/07/2019 16:21

I learnt that I do not like supernoodles. I gave them a try and thought 🤮 I used to like the mushroom flavour ones though so maybe I should look for those again. If they still sell them as was 20 odd years ago!

I also learnt that there IS such a thing as too many kit kats and orange clubs Blush; that my children devour a box of cereal in 3 days, that LL milk is great for tea, hot chocolate and cheese sauce; that macaroni cheese with added frozen spinach is delicious; that I'll happily drink tea without sugar; and that soap is better than shower gel.

My freezer is full
To bursting but I tried some mince this week and even though it’s well within the freeze date, it tasted rank - kind of like kidney?! So I think that’s going to have to go which is an incredible waste and disappointing.
I need a freezer sort out so I can see what I’ve got but there’s still plenty of frozen veg, frozen fruit, frozen fish portions, chicken, etc so I think that would see us for a good month or so, then I have a big pantry cupboard of tins.
But it feels like it’s missing a lot.

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 16:50

I feed all my manky old food to various wildlife - there are a lot of young birds around at the moment, hedgehogs, cubs, even crickets (long story), so I don't feel it's wasted.

I'm thinking about medicines now.

Sleepinglemon · 25/07/2019 17:04

Very depleted. I had 3 months worth of supplies at one point. We've been working through the freezer the last couple of months as don't want to be reliant on year old freezer food should the worst happen in October. And also working through anything in the cupboard that will go off before the end of the year. Will start to restock again soon.

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 17:06

@AutumnCrow that’s a good idea!
I’ve got paracetamol, ibuprofen etc but not much else really. Not sure what to get... maybe flu meds although we have a fair few of those although can’t hurt to have a few more. Need to get more plasters and antiseptic wipes actually

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 17:27

I've also got co-cocodamol, antiseptic creams, antihistamine stuff.

It's the prescription meds I really worry about. I'll try and get at least a month in hand again, but there have been shortages already with some of them so it's difficult enough as it is to have an adequate supply. I'm running round three separate pharmacies some days, in a decent-sized city.

romeoonthebalcony · 25/07/2019 18:18

it's over 33 degrees in my food cupboard this week and I'm wondering if this can cause spoilage? I've read that cans go through a different process in hot countries to avoid heat spoilage? Anyone know about this?

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 18:37

I found this blog piece from the U.S.
