Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Not sure how hair got in that sentence

NoWordForFluffy · 16/08/2019 06:52

That's good to know!

I'm sure your hair is lovely too though!

SpoooyGhost · 16/08/2019 08:20

Nice win! I didn't win the breadmaker, but I'm going to check the charity shops again tomorrow. Freezer is coming tonight. I'm cleaning the whole kitchen today in preparation.

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 08:24

Awesome bargain!

Pilcrow · 16/08/2019 08:34

It's probably been posted on here already, so sorry to ask again, but - those of you who bought wind-up radios, which one would you recommend?

Hedgehogblues · 16/08/2019 08:37

Is there a thread somewhere for suggestions of non food items to prep/stockpile?

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 08:49

@Pilcrow , I do the incredibly scientific rule of "best reviews/second cheapest on Amazon ".

SistemaAddict · 16/08/2019 08:52

@Hedgehogblues I'll start one as so far everything is just together.

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 08:53

@Hedgehogblues , it's a tough call and depends on your budget, storage and actual needs. If there are things that are handy like calpol and ibuprofen that you would use if you had the need but don't have much of a stock of at home, focus on them. It's not so much about things being scarce as supermarkets being unpleasant places for a while and more expensive.
As for stuff like a radio and torches etc, it's a good idea to have those generally.
Also think about skills like making bread or rustling up a meal from uninspiring ingredients you might have but don't know how to use in combo.

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 08:54

Good idea @Bercows . And very helpful.

Pilcrow · 16/08/2019 08:54

Thanks bellini GrinGrin

Good rule to have!

kjhkj · 16/08/2019 08:58

Ive just tried to thin of all the consumables we use and have then forward purchased them. From things like washing powder and bin bags through to lightbulbs and next size up school shoes/trainers.

I went out in the monsoon to collect my new toy!

I'll be trying it out later. 😁

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 14:02

Oooooo @NoWordForFluffy . Let us know. Smile

NoWordForFluffy · 16/08/2019 14:55

Will do. I'm very excited!

rosie39forever · 16/08/2019 19:31

Home bargains are currently selling massive bottles of Persil bio and non bio liquid with over a 100 washes a bottle for £9 and 4litres day f comfort for £3.99, my shed is getting embarrassingly full of washing products!

CrunchyCarrot · 16/08/2019 19:43

Have fun with that Fluffy! Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 16/08/2019 19:49

I've been making more mincemeat first. The bread machine was rather dirty so has been washed and is drying nicely. I'll set it to go later. 😁

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 16/08/2019 19:57

My stash is decimated, need to get topping it up again Hmm the only things left are a gigantic bag of rice, a quite large bag of prunes and some mincemeat 😂

It has taught me the value of a stash though. I really was skint a couple of months ago and it helped so much. It's good knowing what I actually use, too. Tins of tomatoes, pasta, cheese in the freezer and tins of beans and pulses and I'm pretty happy.

cherin · 16/08/2019 19:59

In this order:
1.5 teaspoons of dry yeast, or 20gr of fresh
3 teaspoons of sugar
3 cups of flour (strong white)
1 scant teaspoon of salt
1.5 cups of lukewarm water
Fast setting (1:50)

In my Panasonic that’s the best bread I’ve done, for some reason it needs more water the other brands (I’m on the 6th or 7th machine!) and it’s finicky, it really prefers the liquids at the top.
If you make pizza, replace 1/2 cup with good quality extra virgin olive oil (and the dough setting, of course)

cherin · 16/08/2019 20:03

(Replace 1/2cup of water with oil...I mean)

thenightsky · 16/08/2019 20:51

My panasonic likes:

rapeseed oil wiped around the pan and the paddle, with emphasis on the corners.

small shake of flour over the top of the oil. Prevents sticking later.

3/4 teaspoon of Lidl yeast.
400g Lidl strong bread flour.
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
15 grams butter
300 mls water (added last and immediately before switch on)

choose bake/medium/light crust

it takes 4 hours and come out perfect as long as you remove from pan as soon as the beep sounds.

crankysaurus · 17/08/2019 06:48

Breadmakers are really handy but for those without there are bound to be some YouTube videos in how to make bread by hand. My auntie taught me years ago, kneading is a great workout on the arms!

Most breadmakers also have a dough setting, which is handy if you want to split the dough for rolls in the oven or for pizza bases.

That link to the other thread is handy. I think I might double check our paracetamol / Calpol situation for winter colds.
