Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I used to routinely blitz stale bread to out into the freezer as breadcrumbs. Can be used from frozen.

Don't do it so often now as I do the MN HFLC BootCamp so no bread Sad (Use Parmesan, ground almonds and flaxseed for my home made chicken nuggets instrad(.

mamapants · 18/08/2019 09:00

Www they sound lovely prettybird

Mistigri · 18/08/2019 09:14

Bread, milk and emergency sandwich stuff in case school dinners are affected - 30th Oct

If we are still on track for no deal, shelves risk being emptied of bread and other fresh items before the 30th.

(My personal view is that no deal is still unlikely, because as the Sunday Times leak shows, no government could survive it).

prettybird · 18/08/2019 09:17

They are good says I modestly Smile

Generous amount of salt, some pepper and a wee bit of Colman's mustard powder mixed in to the dry mixture and then used to coat cut up chicken pieces that have been tossed in bowl with a beaten egg.

I have a list of things to buy in the last week. It's half term here the week of 'B' day so will need to stock up on things to keep the kids in snacks that week anyway.

SpoooyGhost · 18/08/2019 09:24

My bread loaves are like bricks but I find wraps easy to make. Chapati flour is cheap and the wraps can be frozen once made. An alternative for packed lunches if need be.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/08/2019 09:40

I'm scheduling an eye exam in a week or so (my reading glasses are useless now!).

I won't be buying anything in the last week except perishables. I hope to have all my stocks ready by late September. Items with the shortest time till expiry will be bought last to give them the longest possible shelf life.

Hoooo · 18/08/2019 10:16

This is a useful link,

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 10:17

I get paid on 26 Oct, or 25 as that's the Friday. I'll schedule a big order for that day, I think. Thankfully the kids don't have milk so UHT will do me and DH.

I'm more concerned about how much fresh fruit and veg the kids eat as there simply aren't substitutes for them. But I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 10:22

@mamapants, that website says that slightly soft apples are then put in the fridge. They sound grim. Apples should be crisp! And therefore stored earlier! Though I don't have the fridge space for all the apples we eat. We get through about 40 a week!

I think that close we will be seeing goods out of stock as people rush to do a last minute stock up.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 10:34

Well, I'll have a fair amount by then, but there's no point getting fresh stuff now. I can only work with a) my budget and b) the reality of fresh food!

mamapants · 18/08/2019 10:36

nowordforfluffy do you think maybe they keep longer at that point maybe? I don't know I was thinking of just putting some bags straight in the fridge. And stocking up on butternut squash etc. I'm hoping we'll still be getting veg from our veg delivery but if there is a petrol shortage that might be problematic.
Worried now I need more supplies than I'd been thinking.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 10:39

We simply have no fridge space for apples, so it's a non-starter. And the kids wouldn't eat soft ones either (nor would I!).

I'm growing butternut squash this year, so shouldn't run out.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/08/2019 10:42

Perhaps as an exercise it would be helpful to figure out exactly what meals and snacks you would have if there were no fresh veg available, and you have to survive only on what's in your store for one week. I expect that is far worse than what would actually take place, but it might focus the mind on what meals you would concoct.

Maybe write it down and see if you have the necessary ingredients and how much of your stores would be used. That then gives a benchmark as to what extras you may need and how far your stocks will go, by extrapolation. Also helps quieten the nerves by working out just how much is needed rather than that horrible anxiety in the pit of one's stomach due to the unknown. I think I'll carry out that task today.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 10:47

I have small, fussy, kids. There's obviously frozen veg and some that I'm growing, but there are no substitutes for the tonnes of peppers, grapes, berries (they don't eat frozen ones), apples and cucumbers they eat!

kjhkj · 18/08/2019 11:24

Im still using up butternut squash bought in the spring. They last for ages stored properly.

Apples should store for a long time. Just check them beforehand and individually wrap them in paper and store somewhere cool. If they do go soft use them in a crumble.
Carrots can be bought fresh and stored in sand
Onions and garlic last for ages if dried and stored properly

Some things won't last without freezing or dehydrating but then those are the things we shouldn't really be eating out of season anyway.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 14:40

I've been head in sand (away or busy) for a few weeks now, but need to take a proper look at what I have. Only the builders still haven't finished and need to go in the loft where I keep everything and so I can't get it out properly to check. Still.

noodlenosefraggle · 18/08/2019 14:48

I'd either get loaves and freeze them or buy bread mix or flour instead of risking waiting til Oct 30th. You could do flatbread easily enough for wraps.

Iwannasnack · 18/08/2019 16:03

Long time lurker on these threads. I’m just starting to replenish my March stash again. Was interesting to see how long things lasted.
Coming on to ask a proper prepper question. What are people doing about water. I assumed water supply would be ok last time but now I’m having doubts. Are people hoarding bottled water ( really don’t want to do this) or is it worth having water purification tablets in?

SpoooyGhost · 18/08/2019 16:39

I have two 5ltr bottles, but that's just in case water board doing works, they're not great at letting us know.

I do have water purification tablets from camping too, and apparently a good boil does wonders too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 16:55

We've got water purification tablets somewhere and a couple of big purpose built containers. On holiday recently where it was hot, we found we got through about 5l of water a day for drinking and washing fruit and salad between four people. We used tap water for the kettle.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 16:56

I've managed to do a stock check of everything that's not tins and although I need to top up, it seems under control. Hoorah!

bellinisurge · 18/08/2019 17:33

@Iwannasnack - don't anticipate water problems with Brexit but as I am a general prepper, I have stuff any.
I have some bottled which I bought during Aldi shops. The odd two or three over a few months. Only what I have space for and could be arsed to get. I have a water butt to in the garden. I'd say it is always rainy here but we have had water issues- I live near the Pennines and there were moor fires due to Iack of sufficient rain fall which you might remember from the news.
I know how to filter and purify water and have various ways of doing that.
I also keep a lifestraw in the car.
