Westministenders: The Only Election That Matters - The Tory One

Fallout from the Euro Elections makes for interesting reading for the leadership hopefuls.

Its not a clear cut as some make out. There is still a case for a deal. The trouble is passing it through parliament. And there is no time to do that. Nor no will.

Any new leader's priority isn't going to be a deal. Its going to be avoiding a General Election. And thats going to be hard.

We are also realistically facing the prospect of another extension which France is likely to block leading to no deal or no deal.

Or a 2nd Referendum.

A 2nd Referendum might be the only way to avoid a General Election. And that will still have no deal on the ballot. Of that you can be sure.

Peter Foster of the Telegraph remarked this morning that in fact the only way to a deal now, might well be via no deal, because of all the routes we have exhausted through incompetence. And that will come at a very high price.

Thanks Red!

I'm on holiday in Italy. When we flew in, the EU arrivals queue at passport control was short and fast moving, whereas the non-EU arrivals queue was enormous and very slow. I really didn't envy the people having to wait 1-2 hours to get into the country. It was odd to think that if it hadn't been for a handful of recalcitrant Tory MPs we would have been amongst them.

RedToothBrush · 28/05/2019 16:01

I see expelling Alistar Campbell from the Labour Party has had the right effect:

David Lock QC @DavidLockQC
As a former Labour MP and Minister, I voted Green in the European elections. I await my expulsion papers

Be fun trying to plan business trips like that ...

I hope there's a slew of I am Spartacus tweets from 'disloyal' Labour party members.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2019 16:10

Pmk. Awaiting my expulsion letter from Labour. I guess they’ll only go for the high profile ones. They’ll still want my money.

Peregrina · 28/05/2019 16:10

The way to a deal might be via no deal, perhaps. Alternatively, it might be to a total collapse of the country into a similar state as Venezuela is now in. It seems too much of a gamble, but the Tories and to a lesser extent seem more interested in gambling than trying to consider the needs of the country.

Meanwhile Theresa is still going....

Paul Brand @PaulBrandITV
BREAKING: Theresa May arrives in Brussles for talks, saying Brexit is "now a matter for my successor." Odd to have a zombie PM discussing on UK's behalf.

PM says she won't comment on leadership contest, but still thinks it's best for UK to leave with a deal.

She's gone to Brussels for talks. Which she can't talk about. Because its a matter for her successor.

okayyyyyyy....

Its going to be avoiding a General Election.

With the Fixed Term Parliaments the first step would be avoiding a Vote of No Confidence. Labour is in disarray also, and not really in a fit state for a GE so they may think twice.

woman19 · 28/05/2019 16:13

Wonder who Hoey voted for.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 28/05/2019 16:14

Or they could just expel Jeremy Corbyn Wink

Pmk

TemporaryPermanent · 28/05/2019 16:17

Yeah, Alastair Campbell voting LD. That's what was wrong.

Corbyn is SUCH a twat. He's really shrunk into his role.

LouiseCollins28 · 28/05/2019 16:23

Thanks Red. i missed most of the last thread and caught up later.
Delighted to see Alistair Campbell gone Grin Hopefully a good few to follow him out the door if this #ExpelMeToo takes off! Smile

Jeremy Hunt saying he hopes that the EU will reconsider altering the WA! Even though he knows they are dead set against it, he hopes they'll change their mind.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Hunt said he wanted to change the withdrawal agreement that Mrs May negotiated with the EU - despite the bloc repeatedly refusing to re-open talks on the document.

He also pledged to create a new UK negotiating team - drawn from all sides of the Tory Party, plus members of Northern Ireland's DUP - to "give the EU the confidence that any offer can be delivered through Parliament".

And thank you Red for these threads - it's the only way I can just about keep up with the flow of events! Flowers

Misplaced Cat Marker

Not actually owning a cat (but seemingly infested with the things) it's a poor substitute for all the cat pic placemarkers.

Peregrina · 28/05/2019 16:27

Hunt - twerp. I hardly think that even if the EU was minded to re-open negotiations, that they would re-open them only for representatives of one party. I suspect they would want to see a proper cross-party delegation.

Well the coffee and croissants are very good so she is not entirely stupid.

{ I suspect they would want to see a proper cross-party delegation.}

If only to say NO more efficiently, rather than one at a time.

Would be an interesting development if #expelmetoo leads to self-purging of the Blairites.

Every sympathy with the count in Dublin. I was curious about "reallocating surplus" in NI last night so did some research. According to wiki there are any number of acceptable methods and they can theoretically all lead to different outcomes.

Loads and loads of different strategies for STV too. Scottish council elections in 2016 were interesting because the Tories fielded a sub-optimal number of candidates and ended up under-represented. Looks like DUP/UUP/TUV managed to split the UUP vote yesterday though and cause the opposite effect.

All the gaming possibilities start to make FPTP look entirely rational.
