Westministenders: The Only Election That Matters - The Tory One

Fallout from the Euro Elections makes for interesting reading for the leadership hopefuls.

Its not a clear cut as some make out. There is still a case for a deal. The trouble is passing it through parliament. And there is no time to do that. Nor no will.

Any new leader's priority isn't going to be a deal. Its going to be avoiding a General Election. And thats going to be hard.

We are also realistically facing the prospect of another extension which France is likely to block leading to no deal or no deal.

Or a 2nd Referendum.

A 2nd Referendum might be the only way to avoid a General Election. And that will still have no deal on the ballot. Of that you can be sure.

Peter Foster of the Telegraph remarked this morning that in fact the only way to a deal now, might well be via no deal, because of all the routes we have exhausted through incompetence. And that will come at a very high price.

I'd forgotten about the AnyFucker debacle; it wasn't long after I joined, I think.

SwedishEdith · 28/05/2019 21:02

pmk.

Banned???

borntobequiet · 28/05/2019 21:04

Placemarking in a weary fashion as on hols with DGDs. Lovely but tiring. DS remarked that TM sounded as though she’d had a weight lifted off her shoulders. Actually I can identify with that. When I retired from teaching one of the first things I realised was that I no longer had to speak to people very. clearly. in. language. that. was. easy. to. understand. and. say. the. same. thing. over. and. over. again. until. they. got. it. It’s exhausting.

borntobequiet · 28/05/2019 21:05

Hi TiP. Miss you.

Hazardtired · 28/05/2019 21:07

My impending imploding might be getting to me but we could start referring to TiP as a godly like creature watching over us. We can talk to her but she can't talk to us it's very biblical.

Or y'know MN could reinstate her and then I wouldn't have these ramblings Hmm @mnhq

Frankiestein402 · 28/05/2019 21:07

Surely all that's needed for the WA to get past the nutters is for it to I clude an 'article 50b' which specifies how we'd exit the backstop?

Not that I want that to happen but I confess I have never understood the erg et al objection to the backstop - it gives us a far better deal with the EU than we have now - with no contribution. (yes we are constrained in making 'trade deals' but no-one really believes we can make advantageous deals with anyone else.)

Re the Emma Thompson baiting - she did emphasise that flying was an issue but that she was lucky enough to be able to afford carbon offset for each flight she takes.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 21:11

Good idea, susan

"Bring back our TiP !"

lonelyplanetmum · 28/05/2019 21:13

Bit distracted with half term ...waves to TiP. Permanently banned?

dreichuplands · 28/05/2019 21:15

Hi tip

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 21:17

The ERG object to the backstop because they don't really believe their own fantasies.

They plan FTAs with e.g. the USA, which would mean the backstop would be activated unless the magic border the is in place

AND
they know the magic tech won't be possible until at least the 2030s - acording to the HMRC bod in charge -
and quite possibly never / not before reunification
(because how can tech decide if a closed van has e.g. beef inside and whether that beef is sub-standard US beef via the UK)

Hazardtired · 28/05/2019 21:18

bigchoc reported you with the following comments

We believe you banned our TiP - could we have her back please?

Also thank you for your hard work, your very pretty and kind.

Oakenbeach · 28/05/2019 21:22

The WA is only the Exit Deal, so the 3 main planks - exit bill, expat rights, backstop in case the UK reneges - would remain.

One wonders why Labour brexiteers refused to vote for it then.... unless it was purely to play party politics and inflict damage on the Government. I wonder if pro-Brexit MPs like Lisa Nandy will regret the day they didn’t break ranks and push it through...

Labour’s implosion over Brexit will be every bit as nasty and damaging as the Tories... I just think Labour supporters are still in denial as to how bad it will be for them.

1tisILeClerc · 28/05/2019 21:32

To me it is fairly obvious that the whole of Brexit has not been 'Project managed'. There are a multitude of bun fights going on in all parties and no one is focusing on getting a coherent plan to present to the EU which says we want in/out on this/that date with these treaties confirmed/need exchanging.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/05/2019 21:32

Difficult to fathom Labour policy on Brexit, but I'd say their votes against the WA were a mixture of:

  • Opposing to cause the govt problems - a BIG reason

  • Being vey confused

  • Not wanting to be seen to vote in Brexit, as many Remainers would never forgivee this

  • Wanting a guarantee about the fuuture relationship, that the Tories can't sell off more chunks of the uk, NHS etc
or make an FTA - a legally binding international treaty, possibly with harsh penalties for breach - with the USA, that would seriously hamper a future Labour govt

prettybird · 28/05/2019 21:33

Iirc, the "final straw" was giving advice about the legality (or not) of a US visa (post now deleted), similar to advice that mathanxiety later also gave - on a thread that is itself now deleted as it is was somewhat suspect (and others , not TiP were casting doubts) Confused

But it's MNHQ's site and so it's their interpretation of the rules that counts Hmm

I think dh would love to see me banned Grin - it would free up more time than I like to admit Blush loads of time Wink

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 28/05/2019 21:38

Difficult to fathom Labour policy on Brexit

We don’t have a crystal ball, and polls are notoriously difficult to get right. But the evidence available suggests that Labour would benefit from adopting a pro-remain stance at a general election

The Electoral Calculus site predicts that with just a 5 per cent swing from the Lib Dems, Labour could make a net gain of 47 seats and become the largest party in the Commons — enough to put Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street

www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-would-labour-win-an-election-if-it-backed-remain

From the way they've behaved today with EHRC enquiry into anti semitism and the dead cat nonsense with Campbell, I can only assume that the corbynites have no intention of trying to get in to power.

Catslovepies · 28/05/2019 21:47

Maybe that's Corbyn's strategy....avoid power until the dirty work of brexit is done???

Peregrina · 28/05/2019 21:47

The constituency Conservative party have already had a fright over the local elections.

So the statement about their catastrophic losses were just for public consumption, while behind closed doors they were sh*tting themselves.

RhubarbIsEvil · 28/05/2019 21:48

Do you think that Corbyn has jumped the shark with Alastair Campbell?

BeckyAnnLeeman · 28/05/2019 21:51

I think the Campbell thing has shown how petty the Labour party currently is and it's crystalised to the public what the upper echelons of Labour view as a true crime (Campbell's admission) versus what's accepted and brushed under the carpet (antisemitism and Hoey's flagrant lionising of Farage and the BP)

Peregrina · 28/05/2019 21:52

Oh I see Bercow plans to stay on, much to the annoyance of the Brexiters. Yes!

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 28/05/2019 21:54

Sorry a bit off the general topic but following Greenwash. It's a thing. DGR

I was recently randomly contemplating the amount of additional washing work created by trying to be green and not use disposable stuff (face cloths, nappies, water bottles, wipes etc.) It takes time. So does not using the car for school runs etc.

I absolutely think we have to protect the planet. But I did just think that these planet saving activities seem to make traditionally “women’s” jobs harder and more time consuming.

I guess the thing to do is change the view that these are “women’s” jobs??? Or maybe it’s just my DH who can’t operate the washing machine Blush

Hazardtired · 28/05/2019 21:55

MNHQ replied already to reporting... they can't elaborate...

I thought they'd pop in and you lot would debate it... can't face you lot Grin
