Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

DGR
I think a Westminsterenders meet up would be DEEPLY surreal and amusing

GaspodeWonderCat · 01/05/2019 16:57

DGR: 'mother of all piss-ups if Revoke happens'. I have beer and whiskey in my stash, so happy to meet up for mega PU. I can bring rest of stash (tins etc) for food banks. So perhaps all meet at @Iambuffy? Or @prettybird has offered sanctuary in her garden for those in need?

LonelyTiredandLow · 01/05/2019 16:57

DGR - Have been T-total for a nearly a month now (stopping smoking) so i'd be up for that as the best excuse to err Grin

LonelyTiredandLow · 01/05/2019 16:59

I see a version of the Yellow Pages advertisement happening chez @prettybird Grin

@Perigrina I fear we are more likely to be discussing the after effects of Brexit on here for decades.

1tisILeClerc · 01/05/2019 17:04

You could rendezvous at my place. There is an upside in that it is in Euroland so the shops are likely to be full although they are closed all day on Sundays.

DGRossetti · 01/05/2019 17:08

You would (not ?) be amazed at how fierce the debate still rages round these parts about the creation of Sandwell in 1974 ....

Moanranger · 01/05/2019 17:08

Post-Jeremy’s weaselly decision yesterday, re confirmatory PV, I decided to for sure vote LD. So far I have received Lab & Con leaflets, nada from LDs. Much scanning of internet to find out who is running, policies, etc, still nada. Resorted to phoning number on local LD website which-surprise, surprise - is years out of date. Discussion with person on end of said now-defunct phone number, suggested I contact LD Cllrs on District web site. So I have sent out six emails to request info on these candidates. LDs missing a trick, they are second largest party to Tories here so could really pick up votes. Something deeply flawed about how they are organised as a party.
I willlet you know if I get any response whatsoever from cllrs, but I am not hopeful.

DGRossetti · 01/05/2019 17:09

I think the LDs took 2015/17 really badly Sad

TheElementsSong · 01/05/2019 17:16

The LDs are really underfunded, I think. Running on a shoestring.

1tisILeClerc · 01/05/2019 17:21

I was distraught when Rutland got vapourised, scarred me for minutes.
I used to enjoy Rutland Weekend TV though.

Peregrina · 01/05/2019 17:22

Dare I say it - join the party and get active. Some new blood in a party can work wonders.

Your local electoral office should have a list of the candidates.

LonelyTiredandLow · 01/05/2019 17:23

I really hope this is a turning point for them. I can't see how anyone could still hold the coalition against them compared to the last govt and feel justified. Personal opinion but they have the clearest manifesto for remain and have stuck to their guns; on that basis alone they should be respected.

prettybird · 01/05/2019 17:25

Veg beds are coming on nicely and I have 66 very small tomato seedlings in the greenhouse, but I'm not sure I'll have enough to cater for everyone Wink

Plenty of plum gin though GinGrin

The LibDems did suffer badly losing lots of deposits. So if you do join, expect to be plagued for demands for money! But having said that, I am a member of an active branch, which means we have enough people to spread the workload and get things done, and have had a number of successes in getting useless representatives out. E.g. last election a Tory who lost bleated about how he wanted to do this, that and the other, and now he couldn't, but I thought to myself, you have been on the council since the year dot chum, and done nothing, so stop whining.

(He's trying again this time!)

Surely if Revoke happens, we’ll be in Euroland too. That’s kind of the point Wink

DGRossetti · 01/05/2019 17:32

I used to enjoy Rutland Weekend TV though.

Aged 10 (?) so did I. My late DM used to let me stay up and watch it (and loads of stuff that would raise eyebrows today ....).

All you need is cash ...

DGRossetti · 01/05/2019 17:34

You're saying that in a country where people voted for an epoch defining change based on bent bananas and passport colours ? Have we learned nothing about the "average" voter ?

RedToothBrush · 01/05/2019 17:36

The LDs are hand to mouth for money. I think they need a couple of hundred pounds per member to run (so if you are on basic sub, someone else has to stump up that cash). They are literally run out of spare bedrooms and sheds; proper offices are only for MPs and HQ.

I think a Westminsterenders meet up would be DEEPLY surreal and amusing

I think I'd be terrified. If only because I have a very strong feeling I'd bump into someone who knew me or knew DH! There are times I've thought it would be nice... I've met complete strangers online many times, but haven't done it for years. Deeply surreal and amusing sums it up.

could all pledge to meet up for the mother of all piss-ups if Revoke happens

If only.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/05/2019 17:49

I had a mini Westminstenders meet up with FlowerPlower the other week! And another the week after with someone I know from elsewhere on the board, but sometimes dips into here.

Hell, I married an internet random (from a band's board!).

I'm also a lightweight, so would probably be first to PU! EnvyGrin

We've had loads of LD literature here; they're our most prolific party for flyers.

I'm still hoping they were all brainwashed by McKenna...
