Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

Thanks @HesterThrale , fucking Yaxley-Lennon is a candidate in my area. Fair smattering of Free Tommy graffiti and stickers pop up. Need to keep that twat (and EDL candidate here) back in the sewer they came from.

frumpety · 30/04/2019 06:43

Thanks for the info regarding registering to vote. Has the process of registration changed for all elections ? previously I just got a form from the local council and said who was living here who was entitled to vote ? When I registered to vote for the EU elections, I think I needed to give my NI number this time, I did it a couple of weeks back and cant remember exactly what I did, just that it was pretty easy. Will get DH's NI number and register him today Smile

NoWordForFluffy · 30/04/2019 07:02

You're in my area then, Bellini. It's LD or Green for us apparently. Though I'm waiting until a) Labour stop pissing about and tell us if they're supporting a PV or not and b) Remain Voter tells me which is the best way to maximise my vote. Though I have a postal vote so I hope they don't leave it too long!

Sostenueto · 30/04/2019 07:08

PMK

bellinisurge · 30/04/2019 07:16

The good Confused news @NoWordForFluffy is that there appear to be a bunch of other twatty candidates -EDL/ UKIP and of course Farage's mob. Hopefully they will take each other out in the same way I suspect Remain-flavour candidates will.

RHTawneyonabus · 30/04/2019 07:21

Frumpety you should register to vote on line every time you move. Canvas info might be sent to your address to check who lives there / if you still live there so if the property has changed hands then they can remove you. If you stay at they same address you stay on the register and you do not need to register to vote for each individual election.

If you are an EU citizen from another member state you will need to complete an additional form stating your intention to vote here before you can vote in the Euro elections.

frumpety · 30/04/2019 07:30

RHT been at this property for over 15 years now. I may have panicked and thought the process was different for EU elections , just odd that DH hasn't received his polling card for the EU elections, if you don't need to do anything different, in the past they have always come together. Might give the local council a ring today.

Iambuffy · 30/04/2019 07:35

Green have done better than LDs here?
I find that surprising.
But I suppose too many people are still angry with the LDs for going into coalition with the Tories.
Their death knell I think.
They didn't do well in 2015 or 2017 - but green?
Jesus.
I'll have to bathe in dettol afterwards :)

Iambuffy · 30/04/2019 07:35

....which isnt very environmentally friendly now I think about it!

Piqued by the use of 'tarnation', and as part of this mornings work avoidance, it can mean damnation or eternal damnation and is also the name of a film which apparently had a budget of $218 and had a box office take of $1.2 million.
I am on the fence about voting as I feel that the UK should only remain if the vast majority of MEPs are pro Europe. So the likes of BoJo, Rees Mogg and Farage should be excluded and preferably be in court and sentenced for their activities.
Having a strong or even extreme right wing element to UK MEPs and cabinet would be very dangerous for Europe as a whole as once such ideology and violence take hold it is very difficult to counter without resorting to similar measures. It is back to the old 'hearts and minds' comment.
I just can't understand the mentality of some on Brexit threads who are still hoping the EU will fall apart, as if the UK would suddenly benefit from it and become 'great' again. If the EU 'falls', the UK will go with it, whether the UK is an EU member or not.

@bellinisurge, we do have a rum group of idiots running, don't we?

The north west is a very strange place, politically and culturally. Outside of the big cities, the level of racism is horrific. But you couldn't get more welcoming and diverse than the cities. We're not bad here, as we are very close to Liverpool, but I know your area is hideous, from what you say (though I've no idea exactly where you are).

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2019 08:18

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Excl: Theresa May becomes first Tory leader in 185 years to face a grassroots vote to oust her. PM was told today that an association chairmen's petition has succeeded and Emergency General Meeting will be triggered in June (1/3)

Another unwanted record for May: the 1st time in Conservative Party’s 185 year history (since its foundation in 1834) that members have forced an EGM to discuss the leadership. Date will be set after local elections, with 28 days notice. Expected early-mid June (2/3)

May has been invited to address the EGM of 800 senior activists, which is likely to become a humiliating public trial, coming just after the twin local and euro elections drubbings. Vote will be non-binding, but losing it will be very hard for PM to survive (3)

I'm fessing up to being miserable as sin and i haven't followed the threads much.

Kept on top of the news but everything is so utterly shite it wasn't really helping my mood. Had shitty drs appointment with DP and things aren't looking great in terms of improvement for him. He's stablised so currently not trying to die on me which is good but in terms of quality of life it's pants and im running out of ways to keep his spirits up. To rub salt into the wounds there would be several avenues of treatment if the NHS actually functioned as a medical service or we win the fucking lottery.

It makes me a bit ragey.

He doesn't have to be this sick. His life doesn't have to be this limited. How many other people are in this position? Just so angry.

Oh and fucking leavers we know, and it usually is ALWAYS fucking leavers, think I should set up a begging gofund me page for treatment?! Twats. Not offering to do it for us but giving me another task to do because looking after DP isnt exhausting or anything. When someone is chronically ill you cant just raise a bit of cash as a one off, give yourselves a pat on the back for donating and then think all sorted. Chronically means chronic not a made for tv feel good movie fund raise. It's just fairy fucking tale thinking all the time. I hate how the attitude plays into some people deserve help and some other people dont but alas at least leavers consider DP worthy of a begging fund.

Well this got a bit ranty. Nice to off load though Grin

We received our polling cards the other wk and I think we need to vote lib dems but I need to double check that.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/04/2019 08:27

Oh, Hazard. Flowers I'm sorry life is so hard for your DP, and for you too. It's really not right or fair.

With regards this grassroots plot to rid us of TM, I'd imagine that we're probably at the very edge of being able to join the Conservatives to get a leadership vote. I'm not sure I could stand doing it, but is it worth holding my nose?! 🤔🤔

Also, I wonder how many of the MPs who've said they'll jump ship if Boris becomes PM will actually do so? I'm sure there's a few who were all hot air!

hazard 💐 How dreadful for you both
Also an outrageous example of how wealth can determine healthcare: we are already far along the US road

jasjas1973 · 30/04/2019 08:53

Her's a list of sitting labour MEPs and candidates for each region who pledge to campaign for a PV and to campaign for remain in such a vote
I dont know if that helps - especially if the NEC do not agree to insist upon a PV

Would love to vote for a mainstream remain party but Labour isn't it, even if they do yet another fudge on "keeping all options on the table, including a PV...."

Unfortunately, voting Labour will just be then served up as "xx% voted for brexit parties"

So it has to be CUK.

Violetparis · 30/04/2019 09:00

I'm in the North West too, my heart sank when I saw Yaxley-Lennon was going to be a candidate here. Hoping he will be humiliated, I will be voting Labour as the best chance to keep him and The Brexit Party out, that is my priority.

1tisILeClerc · 30/04/2019 09:12

I am not sure what this says about the UK political system and 'democracy' as it is supposed to be, when it is all down to 'game playing' at the end of the day.

jasjas1973 · 30/04/2019 09:18

@Frankiestein402

Would China allow Qualcomm to bid and then build parts of a 5G network in China? no.
Huawei is a part of the chinese state, founded by a former state agent.... is that just coincidence?
Intel, Eriksson, Nokia are not part of the CIA/Mi6 etc.

The US, would not actively seek to wreck the UK, either economically or militarily, China would.
Aerials in 5G are not passive components and there are plenty of alternative suppliers, whose risks will not need to be managed.
there is a very good reason why many in the cabinet (+the 5eyes community) are against Mays decision, which almost certainly will be overturned.

As for a country like China cutting a cable, that would be an act of war and would involve the USA/NATO.

Post brexit (no-deal or just a FTA) one thing is certain, we will lose independence, as we seek trade at any cost across the world, with some very nasty regimes.

Beggars belief you think this is a sound decision, which will further uk interests.
