Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

Sorry, and to be more on track with thread discussion, totally agree with pps that the vibe surrounding Change UK is disappointingly lacklustre currently.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 29/04/2019 11:51

DGR excellent post

Iambuffy · 29/04/2019 11:56

Cuk have been a huge disappointment

DGRossetti · 29/04/2019 11:58

2. Sorry if this has already been said as infinitum. I don't understand the climate change protesters who dismiss Brexit as a less important issue. Given that China, America and others have to be on board to make significant global reductions in carbon emissions, surely the only sensible way ahead is through EU applying pressure in exchange with trade?

The climate is fucked. And there's nothing mankind can do to reverse it in 3 lifetimes, let alone a fraction of one. But by peddling the myth there's "something" to be done, people can get away with upping prices, reducing service, and trousering profits.

If you really wanted to tackle climate change, you'd just start adapting for it. It's easier to put up an umbrella than divert a storm.

DB just shared a video about bananas - but an awful lot of monocultured crops are at risk. That's what happens when you discover you can charge for weight, not flavour. You grow the heaviest varieties you can find and charge people a fortune for eating water.

Yup, ever since it became clear Russia had a hand in Leave I think a lot of people knew divide and conquer was on the cards. Tories have been doing it against the poorest for years, this time around we are even more fragmented. It is why I honestly think a vote for Brexit will enable the end of welfare as decades down the line when we have suffered the consequences we look at who to blame; oh yes, the Leave lot who got us into this mess! They say atm they can't get any poorer, but we all know they jolly well can! Authoritarianism rarely hits those at the top.

Re EU and env issues - we've spoken a bit about the culture wars and the ideology behind Leave is very much anti-environmental protections and women.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/04/2019 12:02

Re far-right Vox in Spain: they got only 24 seats in the 350-seat congress of deputies.
Rightwing People’s party (PP): crashed from 137 to 66 seats

Socialist PSOE: 123 seats
Probable coalition party anti-austerity Unidas Podemos: 42
Moderate centre-right Citizens party: 56
Catalans & other regional parties getting the remainder

TheElementsSong · 29/04/2019 12:02

Something I missed along the way here, is when candidates had to be a 100% fit for every single voter ? Ultimately the only person that can truly represent your views is .... yourself. Which means that if you can't be arsed to do it yourself, you have to accept a little bit of give and take.

Very well said.

I have a massive problem with the wokebro-scourging-of-women-thoughtcrime issue, and there are a whole of other issues which I am also deeply concerned about. But I have to rank what's of immediate timely importance to me and right now it's Brexit.

It's a bit like: the toilet is leaking, and the kids have norovirus, and the mortgage needs to be paid every month... but right now my hair is on fire. I can't repair the loo or clean up the vomit or go to work to earn my salary to pay the mortgage while my fucking hair is on fire. So my immediate time priority is to extinguish my hair, and it doesn't mean that I don't care about mortgage arrears.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/04/2019 12:04

Well said, elements

hanahsaunt · 29/04/2019 12:05

Raging here - just found out that my 'choice' on Thursday is the Tory party candidate or the lunatic ex Tory independent. Considering spoiling my paper and writing in none of the above.

Iambuffy · 29/04/2019 12:09

I feel your pain hannah

Not all of us have a "not terrible" choice to make.

It's all fucking terrible.

Iambuffy · 29/04/2019 12:09

I like your anology elements

Violetparis · 29/04/2019 12:09

Excellent posts DGR and Elements

bellinisurge · 29/04/2019 12:15

Yep, you've got it about right,@TheElementsSong .

NoWordForFluffy · 29/04/2019 12:27

How's the veg doing prettybird and everyone?

I booted my tomatoes out into the poly greenhouse the other week. We lost one to the wind at the weekend, but I think they're otherwise OK.

My chillies and peppers have taken over indoors, and I've 6 pumpkin seedlings through as well. My basil and lemongrass are also coming on.

I've loads of onions (red and brown) plus garlic almost ready at the allotment and my parsnips, peas, broad beans, dwarf beans, brassicas, sweetcorn, leeks and carrots are all doing well. My coriander is germinating well too.

I need to sow more dwarf beans, my courgettes and squashes on my lunch break today (WFH).

So far, so good!

I've nothing else to say on politics today; I've exhausted anything useful to say, so I'll stick with veg! 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 29/04/2019 12:27

Oh yes, great analogy, Elements. Really well put.

woman19 · 29/04/2019 12:35

fluffy! wow! My garden is teeny, but maybe I should get a little poly tunnel.
Spot on elements mother and Shouldn't pragmatism win the day I quite agree. shady

TokyoSushi · 29/04/2019 12:37

Late PMK!

NoWordForFluffy · 29/04/2019 13:11

@woman19, you can get little poly greenhouses that are really good in a small space. Our garden is quite small, but I squeeze loads into it!

I forgot to mention the spuds are coming on great and I've 4 cucumber plants too!

I totally agree re pragmatism. I have to spend my working life being pragmatic about my files so I'm used to compromising on stuff that I'd / the client would really like in comparison to what is ACTUALLY achievable. I think having to do this day in, day out, means I'm more willing to 'hold my nose' than some others may be.

I too have often felt that the trans stuff is being pushed in order to spread disagreement and confusion. It's genius - who would have thought so many people would fall for such utter tosh?
Years ago some friends and I had a plan to start a new religion based on numerology. I seem to remember that it involved paper bags, though I can't remember the context for said bags. But the idea was to get people so wrapped up in it that they would make no decisions without consulting authorised guidance, and paying for it. (Oh yes - the paper bags were to breathe into in order to produce a sense of dizziness and euphoria.) Sometimes I regret that we didn;'t go ahead with it, it was just as the Internet was taking off, which would have been ideal.
Now you all think I'm mad.

Mistigri · 29/04/2019 13:30

Certainly the trans stuff is being used by people like Farrow for personal reasons.

I think the feminist position is perfectly reasonable in many respects, but it does my head in when people refuse to vote Lib Dem or Green because they are too "woke" - while supporting homophobic and anti-abortion nutjobs.

I don't want any part of that sort of "feminism". It doesn't speak for me.
