Westminstenders: Why the Irish Border isn't a Remain/EU Plot

I hope the events of this week give the ERG the kick up the backside over this that they need.

I doubt it will, but I live in hope. The alternative is too horrid to contemplate.

I'll leave this here instead as a reminder of what choice Brexit was always going to come down to.

Happy Easter everyone.

Oh for fuck's sake. As if we didn't have enough to deal with. Surely there'll be huge protests.

Coming to survey his acquisition ( of us) ,put up a new flag to mark the territory he's gained is he?

Or will undertake a more animal type of territorial scent marking perhaps. There's a cartoon in there somewhere.

lonelyplanetmum · 23/04/2019 08:42

Trump I mean obvs- can just see NF greeting his 'plane.

lonelyplanetmum · 23/04/2019 08:47

Trump news now on the BBC and receiving more positive welcoming comments than negative ones on my feed.

What is wrong with us.

Songsofexperience · 23/04/2019 08:49

The US have lost their way. This is how low they've sunk. Hope to God they don't manage to drag us down with them:

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/22/us-un-resolution-rape-weapon-of-war-veto

Whereas the US were always staunch proponents of progressive values, they 'have switched sides':
"Now it’s an unholy alliance of the US, the Russians, the Holy See, the Saudis and the Bahrainis, chipping away at the progress that has been made.”

^Even without trade treaties, existing laws to protect wealthy investors - not the ordinary pleb ! - mean the UK could be sued over Brexit
iirc, Hammond reserved some billions in an earlier budget for this.^

Fascinating! I had no idea. How is this not headline news?

1tisILeClerc · 23/04/2019 10:01

{Fascinating! I had no idea. How is this not headline news?}

Because it doesn't fit with the narrative that the UK is taking back control and that it is about to 'wow' the world with it's new superpowers.
The idea that not only will companies leave, but can demand compensation as well is so 'non-unicorny'.

Dontlickthetrolley · 23/04/2019 10:01

I've just got a text from the school saying it will no longer be needed as a polling station on 23rd May. We are ALWAYS a polling station.

borntobequiet · 23/04/2019 10:02

I hope the announcement of Trump's visit will be the nail in the coffin for the Tory vote in the local elections.
I enjoyed the anti-Trump march and would be up for another one!

Sabine Weyandd@WeyandSabine*

Senior UK HRMC official on how to avoid a hard border NI/IE:

«What you need is (...) sth that looks like a customs union, plus sth that looks like a single market, no customs or tariffs or regulatory standards or controls“ -

aka: the backstop.

HMRC UK Border Delivery Group:

"There is no technology solution which would mean that you could do customs controls and processes and not have a hard border"

The woman charged by Theresa May with planning how the UK's borders will operate after Brexit has told businesses here that
there is no magic technological solution for preventing a hard border in Ireland.

Karen Wheeler, who heads the UK Border Delivery Group, addressed hundreds of businesses at a Brexit advice conference in Titanic Belfast

I have no idea what's happening atm but I have the feeling we are wasting the extension...

DGRossetti · 23/04/2019 11:07

I have no idea what's happening atm but I have the feeling we are wasting the extension...

To fall into no deal after two extensions have been granted isn't a great look for the rest of the world to see, really.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/04/2019 11:14

On some issues, even under this govt, the UK is thankfully still allied with the E27 and against the Trump position
< Trump position = cruel perversions >

Maybe JRM hasn't noticed this issue yet ...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/22/us-un-resolution-rape-weapon-of-war-veto

The US is threatening to veto a United Nationss* resolution on combatting the use of rape as a weapon of war because of its language on reproductive and sexual health
according to a senior UN official and European diplomats.
....
the draft resolution has already been stripped of one of its most important elements, the establishment of a formal mechanism to monitor and report atrocities,
because of opposition from the US, Russia and China, which opposed creating a new monitoring body
.....
European states, led by Germany, the UK and France, have been resisting abandoning the language on access to family planning and women’s health clinics
....
“Until the Trump administration, we could always count on the Americans to help us defend it.

Now the Americans have switched camp,” the diplomat said.

“Now it’s an unholy alliance of the US, the Russians, the Holy See, the Saudis and the Bahrainis,
chipping away at the progress that has been made.”

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-news-live-theresa-may-deal-eu-election-polls-farage-latest-a8881946.html

And people are trying to get TM to resign?

I need blood pressure tablets to get through this extension...

NoWordForFluffy · 23/04/2019 12:00

Boris is the black sheep of the family only Brexiter Johnson. The rest are pro-remain, I think. They must despair of him.

lonelyplanetmum · 23/04/2019 12:08

Piece in the Telegraph that Theresa May warned her post-Brexit immigration strategy could close quarter of NHS services.

I don't know when it will sink in throughout the country that it is a high priority for the right wing of the Tories (who carry the balance of power) to reduce the £190 +? million spent on healthcare.

I do think the effect of ditching EU migration wasn't fully thought through in advance. However the reduction in staff has been an inadvertent bonus to bring about privatisation by stages.

borntobequiet · 23/04/2019 12:10

Ha ha, now I know why I didn't get chosen...Rachel Johnson and Gavin Esler! thank goodness not my age, arseyness or gender criticalness

DGRossetti · 23/04/2019 12:11

Piece in the Telegraph that Theresa May warned her post-Brexit immigration strategy could close quarter of NHS services.

That rather presupposes she gives a shit though. Why would an NHS-hating Tory be worried about that in the slightest ?

(As an aside, anyone read the infected wound thread and was heartened that a Zimbabwean nurser was working in the NHS and knew the treatment ?)

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 23/04/2019 12:46

I have no idea what's happening atm but I have the feeling we are wasting the extension...

To waste one Brexit extension may be regarded as a misfortune; to waste both looks like carelessness.

A handbag?

Sorry. I’m unravelling now...

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 23/04/2019 12:48

Boris is the black sheep of the family only Brexiter Johnson. The rest are pro-remain, I think. They must despair of him.

I’m not sure Boris is pro-Brexit or pro-leave, he’s just pro-Boris isn’t he?

But, yes, I’m sure the rest despair of him.

DarlingNikita · 23/04/2019 12:51

I’m not sure Boris is pro-Brexit or pro-leave, he’s just pro-Boris isn’t he?

Yes.

Jo J has been a bit quiet recently, no?

TheMShip · 23/04/2019 12:53

Singing that's exactly what went through my head about wasting extensions.

Anyone seen this thread? Really powerful on tax havens and Brexit. twitter.com/CricketingMan/status/1120105044353921024?s=20

Dontlickthetrolley · 23/04/2019 13:11

I'm sure I read/heard somewhere that Boris only went Leave to piss off DC Hmm
