Not in my children's name

I am getting increasingly angry with this whole issue.
My children were born into a world where they were allowed to dream beyond borders, they had no deal of Empire or even the commonwealth. They were children of an harmonious block of neighbouring allies.
Yet those of us of another generation are doing our utmost to take these opportunities away from them without any good reason.
How are my children's lives going to be improved by Brexit? How are their dreams going to be enhanced by shutting our borders and closing our minds?
As an adult I'm not convinced by the economic benefits we would gain, as a parent I'm certain my children will not benefit from living on a tiny island without favourable economic trading opportunities with our nearest neighbours, or without freedom of movevent of dreams.
I'm crying inside for the things our children may not forgive us for in the future.
My own children are 13 & 18. As you might expect my elder child is desperately hoping for a PV, as are most of her friends. My 13 year old wants to know why we consider ourselves so different to the rest of the EU.
Do you ever think about what is being taken from your children?
I know this is a rather emotive post but I am just so bloody angry on my DD's behalf.
We are not only responsible for the here and now, we need to think to the future generations Sad

*for the record we Australians are not incredulous per se. We see the paralell with federation (do you even know what that is helmet? Maybe you want to explain given you are so In touch). We get the sentiment. We’re just surprised the British would do it and that the EU wouldn’t even try to fix itself.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:03

Matcha only became a thing in Britain like two years ago ffs. And Asian skincare has only just been ‘discovered’. British people know fuck all about the finer points of Asian cultures and quite frankly don’t even understand Australians properly. They think that Australia is an extension of Essex ffs. I say all of this as an Australian myself.

All the fault of the EU. Once we are out of the the EU, things will be better.

Unbelievable.

DeDoRonRon · 08/04/2019 10:04

With the advent of the internet the human race should become one race in the truest sense.

Aww bless. Literally laughed out loud at this!

MayhemNowCertain · 08/04/2019 10:18

we will be a considerably weaker and poorer country but at least we wont be helping anyone else, eh

Speculation by someone who is afraid of change. 83% of World Trade is outside the EU.

keepforgettingmyusername · 08/04/2019 10:21

I live in NI. My child's future looks uncertain - a possible return to the troubles. Thanks to Brexit he could grow up in a war zone, living in fear, being evacuated from school, trips to the pantomime etc because of bomb scares, exactly like I was. I didn't want that for him. And for that reason those who want to leave even knowing what we know now, can all go and fuck themselves as far as I'm concerned.

MayhemNowCertain · 08/04/2019 10:21

eu immigrants are net contributors- plus they CAN'T just claim any benefits

Eastern European immigrants were claiming child benefit and sending it back to their home countries. I am sure a poster on another thread who was involved in such investigations confirmed that to be true.

MayhemNowCertain · 08/04/2019 10:23

the issues we’ve seen for young people in Greece and Spain

So why were they allowed in? What have they contributed?

QueenOfIce · 08/04/2019 10:23

I can't deal with all the supposition I need actual facts about what will happen if we leave without a deal. I've just come away from the Rohingya refugee camp. Puts things into perspective.

Peregrina · 08/04/2019 10:24

The ECHR was not a product of the EEC/EU but of the Council of Europe, a separate body, and was drawn up before the EEC came into being. Drawn up mainly by British Lawyers. This was the generation who fought in the war, saw the horrors of the concentration camps when they liberated them, and never wanted to see such horrors again.

Please don't let a few facts get in your way though.

MayhemNowCertain · 08/04/2019 10:24

The situation for young people in France is not great at the moment too

Greece, Spain and now France have been mentioned. UK should get out now before they are dragged down.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:25

?

Umm.

A poster was investigating abuse of benefits? If she was investigating them that means they weren't allowed. Abuse of benefit system needs to be looked at.

Can you be very clear, here: You absolutely refute that EU immigrants are net contributors?

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:32

I wouldn't worry. Apparently we'll all start being more open-minded and one-race/one people once we Brexit and lose our European eyes.

Bowchicawowow · 08/04/2019 10:37

I hope that people in NI don’t use the Brexit process as a new reason to start killing people on the UK mainland and each other.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:45

brexiteers: i care about all the little children.

also brexiteers: fuck the gfa.

Tolleshunt · 08/04/2019 10:46

Had they moved their children over here, to be with them while they worked, we would have been obliged to provide schooling, healthcare and other services.

Where the children remained in the home country, we got the benefit of the parents' labour, and taxes, while paying only a fraction of what it costs to provide the usual services to the child. A win!!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 08/04/2019 10:47

They think that Australia is an extension of Essex ffs

Nah I think it's an extension of Surrey. You have to be quite well off to get a visa, so Perth is filling up with rich people from Surrey.

(I may not be being entirely serious)

havingtochangeusernameagain · 08/04/2019 10:50

I live in NI. My child's future looks uncertain - a possible return to the troubles

I wonder why the vote against Brexit in NI wasn't more convincing (too many people blindly following the DUP? some thinking it would being a United Ireland closer?). The vote against in Scotland was greater. And completely deafening in Gibraltar but they don't matter. I wonder how many of them are going to lose their jobs because they don't have work permits for Spain. I am assuming there's no carve out for them to allow them to carry on working in the EU.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:53

people are so small-minded about essex.

Matcha only became a thing in Britain like two years ago ffs. And Asian skincare has only just been ‘discovered’

And this is a problem?

And if it were a problem, how is it anything to do with being in the EU?

And actually Asian skincare has been a thing in the UK for years. I remember reading articles about Korean skincare in Stylist magazine before 2012. It must have been before then because it was the last time I worked in London full time and got the magazine every week.

Helmetbymidnight · 08/04/2019 10:59

all bad shit is due to the eu. everything.

The EU was meant to revive European influence in a world dominated by America and the USSR

That is a very different perspective on history. The EU was motivated (amount other things) to prevent war in Western Europe. Germany and France had had significant wars 3 times in the previous 100 years and they were committed to preventing that. The EU was one of the ways they hoped that would happen.

To see it as a knee jerk reaction to the Cold War is to ignore the wider historical context.

To think of the EU as a force of goodness and openness which only gives people rights and opportunities is naivety boardering on stupidity

I agree - so it's a good job no one is saying that. One can see the advantages of the EU while also being aware that it is a work in progress and changes need to be made.

I would rather stay and fight for improvement than run away and hide.

MayhemNowCertain · 09/04/2019 05:26

Someone somewhere will be looking to profit from the UK turmoil. I would not be surprised if an equivalent of the IRA appeared on the UK Mainland.

Helmetbymidnight · 09/04/2019 07:33

looking to profit from uk turmoil?

the wealthy capitalists of the leave campaign are profiting.
Putin backed leave- anything that makes us all weaker is good for him.
tommy robinson and the far-right wing have been invigorated now.

so yeah, turmoil works for some, obviously.

ZenNudist · 09/04/2019 08:01

@continuallychangingmyphone first time ie heard a brexiteer say its going to take 20-30 years for the situation to stabilise. So in the meantime thats the rest of my working life ruined toiling away in a foundering economy just trying to hold on to my job but not able to thrive.

I assume you dont have any children or know any you care about as you are happy with them becoming a lost generation?

I feel most sorry for todays young adults. Life chances completely screwed unless mum and dad can throw money at them.
