Not in my children's name

drivinmecrazy · 07/04/2019 23:19

I am getting increasingly angry with this whole issue.
My children were born into a world where they were allowed to dream beyond borders, they had no deal of Empire or even the commonwealth. They were children of an harmonious block of neighbouring allies.
Yet those of us of another generation are doing our utmost to take these opportunities away from them without any good reason.
How are my children's lives going to be improved by Brexit? How are their dreams going to be enhanced by shutting our borders and closing our minds?
As an adult I'm not convinced by the economic benefits we would gain, as a parent I'm certain my children will not benefit from living on a tiny island without favourable economic trading opportunities with our nearest neighbours, or without freedom of movevent of dreams.
I'm crying inside for the things our children may not forgive us for in the future.
My own children are 13 & 18. As you might expect my elder child is desperately hoping for a PV, as are most of her friends. My 13 year old wants to know why we consider ourselves so different to the rest of the EU.
Do you ever think about what is being taken from your children?
I know this is a rather emotive post but I am just so bloody angry on my DD's behalf.
We are not only responsible for the here and now, we need to think to the future generations Sad

I was brought up being told that the world was 'my oyster' - and that I would be able to live almost anywhere I chose. If I wanted to emigrate to Canada/Australia/New Zealand/wherever then that would be available to me.

DH and I then had a disabled child and all of those doors suddenly slammed shut. I hadn't anticipated having a disabled child, and to be perfectly honest I didn't even know that it's practically impossible to emigrate when you have children with certain conditions, unless of course you are among the super-rich.

I consoled myself that I could at least still contemplate a future where I could take my child and retire to my family home in Europe. I could apply for citizenship of a European country on account of my heritage, but DH and DC can not.

If FOM is removed we will have no other choice but to stay in the UK forever. The world is no longer my oyster, the UK is my gilded cage.

Luckily the government are renowned for their brilliant treatment of the disabled. Oh, wait.....

@Bowchicawowow - your point seems very clear to me. Perhaps explain it if you feel I am misunderstanding it?

I would never say that Leave voters are ignorant

I didn't say all leave voters are ignorant. I made the assumption that you are a leave voter. If I'm wrong on that, I will change my comment to "That comment shows the ignorance of some Remain voters"

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 14:29

I am a remainer. I really don’t give a shit if you think I am ignorant to be honest.

CardinalSin · 09/04/2019 14:33

I actually think @continuallychargingmyphone is right about brexit improving traffic.

Let's see what the M20 is like post Brexit shall we?

doIreallyneedto · 09/04/2019 14:47

@CardinalSin - Let's see what the M20 is like post Brexit shall we?

I forgot about that. I was thinking of my local commute :-)

doIreallyneedto · 09/04/2019 14:47

@Bowchicawowow - I am a remainer. I really don’t give a shit if you think I am ignorant to be honest.

Fair enough.

Camomila · 09/04/2019 16:15

@doIreallyneedto that’s a shame about Erasmus, though it’s about 15 years away so I can worry about DS potentially wanting to study abroad nearer the time.

Mind you, If we crash out on Friday I might drag my whole family back to Italy. Though their government leaves a lot to be desired too!

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 16:54

@Bowchicawowow , I've been caught up in two IRA bomb attacks in NW England so, weirdly, I do know what I am talking about. I don't live in Wigan. But, like Wigan, I am in NW England, and am from Lancashire. The requirements of GFA only comes as a surprise to someone who lives in Wigan if they are a) ignorant or b) not giving a shit. It is something that has affected the NW of England pretty closely.

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 17:02

If you think that the majority of people in places like Wigan had NI in the forefront of their minds when voting on the Brexit issue you are wrong. I also don’t think it’s fair to call them ignorant. They have their own problems and voted according to their own priorities. If you are really from Lancashire as you claim to be I would imagine you would have more sympathy.

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:05

I'm half Irish. There are lots of Irish and non Irish Catholics where I live. As there are all across Lancashire. Pretty fed up of people thinking we haven't noticed NI.
Perhaps if you aren't from an Irish or Catholic background you could ignore what was going on in NI.

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:10

FWIW, I know plenty of Leave voters. I live in a Leave area now.

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 17:11

I am from an Irish Catholic background. I have been to NI and ROI many, many times. I have staggered out of many a pub pissed when there were soldiers on the streets in the nineties. My experience isn’t important though. I know the majority of people in those areas don’t have NI in the forefront of their minds when thinking about the UK’s relationship with Europe. I am not saying that’s right. I am simply saying that’s how things are.

bloatedbird · 09/04/2019 17:11

Agree

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 17:32

The most bizarre thing that I've noticed since Brexit is the number of m/c people now devastated that their children might miss out on Erasmus, travel or working in Europe when up until now they have been quite happy to vote for the conservative party who didn't give two hoots about all of the children living in poverty without access to good schools, healthcare or housing.

Weird huh? Then people wonder how we ended up where we are now.

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:35

So everyone who voted Remain is middle class? Really?

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 17:35

Spot on LittleChristmasMouse

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 17:38

So everyone who voted Remain is middle class? Really?

Did I say that? No.

Funny how it's quite ok to paint all leavers as x y or z though

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:40

Cuts both ways. No one from Wigan is allowed to think about NI. Only m/c people voted Remain.
Probably why we are in the ridiculous mess we are in.

whattershame · 09/04/2019 17:42

littlechristmasmouse did you vote leave?

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 17:42

I said the majority actually bellini but don’t let the truth get in the way of your bullshit.

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:43

Thanks @Bowchicawowow . Anyone who isn't you talks bullshit.

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 17:44

Such hyperbole!
Where has anyone said that no one from Wigan is allowed to think about NI?

The OP reads like a coca cola add from the 70s, wanting to teach the world to sing, and it appears to be passing a good number of people by that surprisingly people living 4 to a room in a homeless hostel with no food for their kids are not likely to be worrying about the survival of Erasmus.

Combopanda · 09/04/2019 17:45

What a load of bollocks. I live in a non eu country and my children have plenty of options. The is a big world out there beyond the eu.

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 17:46

I haven’t said that either bellini. I said you are full of bullshit.

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 17:49
